“Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you.” (Ephesians 4: 29, Good News Translation)

It may seem easy and natural at times to use words that are either defensive or accusatory. We might not recognize the harm we may be doing with the words we choose. Or we may speak in ways or with a tone that is not constructive or helpful, that only creates more trouble rather than easing it.

Let’s recognize that we do truly want to bring harmony to the world and to others. Our true nature wants to do good, and to feel that good as well. So, we must be awake to our behavior, including what we say. We surely don’t need to condemn ourselves if every word isn’t full of sugar and sweetness. In fact, to be inauthentically nice does not bring to others what is most healing either.

But we can pause long enough to feel that desire within to help and our innate sense of love and compassion. We can listen to God’s voice within us, which leads us with intelligence as well as kindness and grace and wisdom.

And then our words feel genuine as well as good. They reach others in a way that builds them up, rather than tearing them down or belittling their ideas. We can provide what is most needed by listening to what God, Love, would say to His own children (including ourselves) and sharing those ideas with others in our own unique way.

“And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.” (I John 4: 16, Holman Christian Standard Bible)

God is Love. Love is God. And this Love is for us, and it is in us.

As we come to know and to believe this great Love that God has for us, we can feel the power and peace that is naturally ours. As we accept God’s infinite presence and know that it is Love itself, we feel that divine embrace and the safety and comfort it brings.

And what it requires of us is devotion. It means we must nurture and sustain this affection, remain in Love, by honoring our Source and by expressing this glorious quality as fully and as often as possible. God’s infinite grace and goodness, strength and intelligence, belong to us as we remain faithful to Love.

This divine Love is natural to us, but the ego and the world’s beliefs may want to pull us into accepting that anger, hate, resentment, revenge, fear, doubt, and evil are justified and reasonable, that we can live without an awareness of Love.

But Love is Life. And this Life and Love are spiritual, eternal. This Love is our happy place, our healthy place, the heaven that is here and is here to stay.

“What’s more, I am with you, and will protect you wherever you go, and will bring you back safely to this land; I will be with you constantly until I have finished giving you all I am promising.” (Genesis 28: 15, the Living Bible)

You are never alone. Your whole life is in God’s capable hands. He is here with you now and He will be with you wherever you go—physically traveling, moving into new realms of experience, or traversing the mental and emotional landscapes that arise.

You are protected in your journeying, day and night, and you will always be brought home safely. You won’t be left hanging in a space of uncertainty or fear. Your home is ready, and God knows how to bring you there in a way that is secure, exquisitely timed, and which also allows for just the right enlightenment, learning, and progress.

He is with you and me constantly, and God—good, Love, Life—remains with us through every moment, assuring that His promises are completed. God’s plan is that we glorify Him, magnify His light in our own perfect way. And the Almighty’s powerful purpose is always lovingly fulfilled.

“Consider it nothing but joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials. Be assured that the testing of your faith [through experience] produces endurance [leading to spiritual maturity, and inner peace].” (James 1: 2-3, Amplified Bible)

Our challenges are reasons for joy! Yes, I know that may sound hard to believe, but it is true that when trials come, the experiences have a way of moving us forward. We progress in understanding, in wisdom, and in the blessing of spiritual maturity.

And we can realize this happy gratitude much more naturally when we give up the belief that the troubles that come are here to punish us. We may think that we have done something wrong and therefore we suffer. Or we may believe that we are victims in battles we should not have to fight.

But when we let go of either of these premises and begin to see that while we are not eager for problems, the solving of them, the strength, patience, enlightenment that comes, is well worth it. We can rejoice in the fact that, as this message says, we are brothers and sisters, and so we are not lonely warriors. We have not been singled out and we are not alone as we seek the higher good.

And this true joy in all circumstances comes as we lean on God. The trials become occasions for trust, a freeing release of ego, and a blessed discovery of grace and its power to heal and to save.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” (Ephesians 1: 18, New American Standard Bible)

This sweet prayer is so powerful. It bestows on us the sincere desire that our eyes become open to the true sense of God and of a life in grateful awareness of Him.

This awakening is one which enlightens the eyes, not of sense, but of the heart. It is a clarity and inspiration that is discovered in that deep place of love and of life. For to know God, to really understand what we have with Him and in Him, is to know Love. And to really feel the Love that also guarantees our devotion, means being receptive to it and being ready to love. It is to release the blinders on our hearts—fear, limit, ego, resentment, anger, distrust.

Paul wanted the Ephesians and all of us to feel the great glory of God’s Love within us, to consciously claim that hope and the promise, and so to live that natural and available and rich inheritance which is divine Love realized and expressed.

“It is through him that we live and function and have our identity; just as your own poets have said, ‘Our lineage comes from him.’” (Acts 17: 28, the Passion Translation)

Let’s investigate our ancestry. Let’s relish the opportunity to explore our true heritage and what that means for us today.

Our genuine identity proceeds from our spiritual roots. We are directly linked to God. He is our Father and our Mother. Divine Love has formed us. We are composed of His Spirit—the perfect and harmonious qualities that express God’s intention. God’s Life is what gives us life. This is a continual inheritance.

We were not born out of nor confined to the limits of matter. We were born of God. We function according to the everlasting continuity of His Life. We are each the living image of His own goodness, beauty, and light.

We can rest in the fact that our unique identity is held safe in the Truth of God’s purpose. Our being and all its glorious goodness, can neither by found nor lost in physicality or material life.

Let’s remember where we come from and what that means for us. We are children of the divine, so we are always whole, holy, and free!

“God’s Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled.” (Galatians 5: 22-23, Contemporary English Version)

All these wonderful qualities can certainly make for a good experience and a productive one as well. And while they seem like nice human attributes to feel and express, they have their source in something much greater.

As we recognize God’s Spirit in us, we realize we have access to all of these ideal traits in infinite measure, and naturally. It is not by human effort that we are loving. It is by God’s Spirit, His Love for us and with us. We are not peaceful merely because the circumstances are all perfectly aligned, but because God’s Truth assures us, and settles us.

Kindness and gentleness and self-control are possible and a joy to us, for they are a release of self and ego to God’s conscious Love as well as His strength, certainty, and divine government. We can act in a powerful and constructive way, making a positive difference in the world, because we know that God, good, is in charge and that we are both the beloved object and expression of all that He is.

Gratefully remember where your goodness comes from. Accept this powerful gift and use it without restraint or qualification!

“And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness.” (Isaiah 35: 8)

We are not trapped. We are not in a rut. We are not in a place of confusion or indecision. We are not without a way forward or a way out.

God’s promise in this verse is one we can rely on. A highway, an open road, is appearing before us. It is not only one course, it is the way, the right path that is more than merely humanly desirable. It is truly holy.

That way of holiness is a spiritual deliverance, advancing us, progressing us, causing us to grow in grace and in wisdom and in goodness. This way is not one of human devising. It is pure, sacred, clean, satisfying.

Let’s stop looking all over the place for material ways and those routes that are complex and unclear. Let’s open our eyes to God’s way, the highway to peace, purpose, and joy. It is a natural path and it is right there when we are ready.

“In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longings, we must deny sin and plead God’s allness. We must resolve to take up the cross, and go forth with honest hearts to work and watch for wisdom, Truth, and Love.” (Science and Health, p. 15)

Here is a description of true prayer—one that begins with our hearts, gains inspiration in thought, and is carried forward into life.

Cherish the quiet sanctuary. It’s where we commune with God. It begins with that earnest longing—a sincere desire to see more clearly, live more honestly, feel God’s presence and trust His care. In this space of prayer, we must make it about God and not our troubles. As we acknowledge and adore God’s allness, the mistaken views of separation, sin, shame, guilt, and fear dissolve. We are truly with God, good, alone, and in this we are at one with Truth.

And we can remember that this Truth continues with us as we go forth into the world. Distractions and discouragement may want to enter in, but we can resolve to take up that cross—choose to continue to believe and be loyal to what we felt in that sweet sanctuary. We can remain faithful and watchful. We can work with a devotion to our cause, taking each moment as it comes, with new insights. And we can eagerly return to our sanctuary every time we need guidance, comfort, and motivation to face the new day.

“And whenever you stand praying, if you find that you carry something in your heart against another person, release him and forgive him so that your Father in heaven will also release you and forgive you of your faults.” (Mark 11: 25, the Passion Translation)

Forgiveness is our release. When we seek healing, inspiration, comfort, we will find it through divine Love. And this Love requires that we also love.

If we would feel love and its saving presence and power, we can’t remain divided, a heart half ready and yet half resentful. Be willing to allow those moments of communing with God to be more than a plea for your own well-being, but also a yearning to let go. Let your prayer include an earnest desire to be shown where your heart may hold on to hatred, resentment, blame, and to be willing to forgive.

It may seem difficult, but if we want to gain the sweet peace and joy we seek from God, we must stop clinging to any bitterness. We can rejoice in the fact that divine Love Herself is ready to help us to love better, to let go of the mesmerizing sense of being wronged, and to release our brothers and sisters from our anger.

Forgiveness fulfills a desire to feel free. It is wisdom. For to hold one in our hearts as our enemy is to fill with darkness a space that is meant for light, joy, and love.
