“Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace.” (Job 22: 21)

Don’t we all seek peace in our lives and in our very being? While it may seem reliant on circumstances or on other people’s presence (or absence), true peace is available even when the outward conditions may feel noisy and chaotic.

We can take the instructions in this verse to heart and get acquainted with God. We can draw closer to Him, get to know Him better with His qualities of pure Love and infinite Life. We can come to recognize that there is one Mind in control and this Mind is wise, almighty, and kind. Getting acquainted with God is about giving up the preoccupation with persons and self, and simply, humbly, letting God do the talking. We can listen for instruction, be open to love without qualification, and just be with our Father-Mother.

In some other translations of this verse, “acquainting” oneself is rendered as surrendering, agreeing, yielding to God. It is a sweet letting go, a release to God and an agreement that He is All, He is good, and we are safe.

This brings us a sense of peace that reveals prosperity, good at hand. We give up the willful control and give ourselves willingly to God—to His purpose, and His active, intelligent, grace.

“Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11: 29-30, the Message Bible)

The Christ is calling us to be a part of a wonderful labor of love. This work is nurtured by divine Love, encouraged by it, and protected in it. When we agree to serve good, we discover a journey that comes with power and energy and brings true satisfaction.

And we can remember that doing good is not something we need to do alone. In fact, attempting to give in a willful, prideful, or uninspired way, is less productive. And it feels burdensome. But if we look to Jesus’ words and works, recognizing our own oneness with God in our unique mission, we are fruitful and unencumbered.

Instead of slogging away, we can “learn the unforced rhythms of grace.” The ego forces and judges, making for graceless steps that are often stymied in too much self-reflection. But to release ourselves to God, to trust His guidance and our own ability to hear it, is to live freely and lightly. We work with that awesome Christ-spirit, which means healing and progress, poise and peace.

“And those who are wise—the people of God—shall shine as brightly as the sun’s brilliance, and those who turn many to righteousness will glitter like stars forever.” (Daniel 12: 3, the Living Bible)

The people of God are those that are wise. This wisdom that shines brightly is greater, more powerful, more brilliant than the light of human knowledge and intelligence. It is that understanding that is found in a willingness to be God’s people, to yield up our egos and to humbly let Truth and Love shine forth.

This wisdom is not will but willingness. It isn’t pushing to be a star. Rather, it is knowing that all the light that we have comes from God, good, Love, so it is boundless and available. We don’t possess it, but we express it. We are the proof of God’s radiance, and as we realize this, our own individual lamps are sustained.

And as we share this light with others, the stars in our own night sky seem to multiply. One burning candle lighting another, and then another, can cause the whole room to glow. As we remember our Source, we shine more effortlessly and our light helps others to see themselves more clearly as the people of God they truly are, the very proof of divine Life and infinite Love.

“And we heard this voice when it came from heaven while we were with Him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic word strongly confirmed. You will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dismal place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” (II Peter 1: 18-19, Holman Christian Standard Bible)

Jesus’ disciples heard the confirmation of the Christ. They saw the Word of God demonstrated in the life of their Master and in his transcendence of death. They experienced a deep awareness of something greater than the worldly view of things.

And they knew that this prophesy, this spiritual sight and insight, should be heeded by all. We are being encouraged here to pay attention to the Christ, to the realization of man as the son of God, and what this means for each of us. We are all God’s children. This Truth of being is not something to wait for or to ignore. It is a light in the darkness. It is a hope that leads us out of despair, limits and lies, and into a brighter reality.

Pay attention to this light, however dim it may appear at times. Take yourself to the mountaintop, the higher perspective, where you can hear and feel the truth of God’s promises, His presence, His peace.

And as we are humbly receptive, the sunlight dawns in our lives and also in our hearts and we can genuinely share its healing warmth and enlightenment with our world as well.

“Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down.” (Philippians 4: 6-7, the Message Bible)

Worry may seem natural and also justified. We may feel our situation or even our disposition makes worrying our go-to response.

But we can be alert to this tendency and disown it. We can take the very concerns that we have and make them occasions to draw closer to God, to get at the heart of what is troubling us, and to find an answer of Truth and healing.

This may not all happen in a moment, but as we consciously begin to pray and praise—opening ourselves up to solutions and solace, comfort and calm—things change for the better. We begin to feel a hope rising up, and that blossoms into expectation. Then we can gain that sense of peace that is more natural to us than anxiety. We know it will all be okay.

This choice to pray—to consciously connect with God, good, Love—settles us down. It brings harmony to this moment and reveals light as we look ahead to tomorrow.

“Dear children, we must show love through actions that are sincere, not through empty words.” (I John 3: 18, God’s Word Translation)

We are being called to genuine acts of love, from the heart and with pure motives. We are encouraged here to stop talking about goodness and kindness and compassion and healing without the spirit behind those words.

I love that we are being addressed here as “dear children.” It seems that acknowledging this sweet identity, as children of God and also as innocent little ones, gives this admonition even more clarity. To be sincere is to be free of deceit, to be earnest, honest, and real. Aren’t children more naturally like this? They come to one another with open hearts. They don’t try to appear to be something they are not. Their words tend to be straightforward and they usually have a genuine eagerness to listen and to love.

We can become aware of that child within us and nurture its place in our experience. We can come to one another with simple joy and expectation, willingness to listen and to share without superiority. And we can also bring that seasoned adult into play as we use our wisdom to be helpful and to serve one another sincerely and with love.

“Let my passion for life be restored, tasting joy in every breakthrough you bring to me. Hold me close to you with a willing spirit that obeys whatever you say.” (Psalms 51: 12, the Passion Translation)

You can feel the deep desire in this prayer. He turns to God in expectation and seeks more than surface needs being met. It is an earnest plea for spiritual awakening and renewal. This prayer recognizes the importance of growth in understanding, a readiness for God’s inspiration, and an acknowledgment that a passion for life is to be found in obedience to God.

For God is Life and His Life is eternal, infinite, measureless, and full of Love. This true Life can’t diminish or be lost. It is always full, and it is always ours to claim and to reclaim, because it comes from God.

His intention is not one of stagnation or resignation. We may feel it easy to give up and give in to living without joy and enthusiasm. But when we obey God—recognize our enduring Oneness with Him Who is Life and is Truth and is Love—we are ready to listen to His guidance and to enjoy the blessing in that.

We can feel passionate about material things and endeavors, but a true passion goes beyond that. It is a spiritual quality that reveals the wonder of living from breakthrough to breakthrough, glory to glory, joy to joy.

“Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way.” (Science and Health, p. 326)

Let’s be assured that we can advance in our lives without pushing and forcing things. We can trust that even if we aren’t sure what the next step must be, or if we feel too weary to trudge on, God will open the way for us—naturally, rightly, timely.

Our job is not to hold onto some grand ambition and look for material methods to get there, constantly judging ourselves or comparing to others. What we must and can do is to work along, moment by moment, at what it comes to us to do. We can use the gifts we have and the wisdom at hand, to be active in good thoughts and good actions.

The primary thing is our motive. If we look to our intentions and see in them a right desire to do good, or to grow in our understanding, or to achieve something meaningful and helpful, we can trust that our Father will show us the way. If we do what we do with love, and pray for guidance and with gratitude, we will find ourselves blessing others and feeling blessed ourselves.

And this blessing is more than human accomplishment. It is a feeling of worth, confidence, and satisfaction not only in some end result, but in the progressive journey itself.

“I know that you delight to set your truth deep in my spirit. So come into the hidden places of my heart and teach me wisdom.” (Psalms 51: 6, the Passion Translation)

Let God in. His wisdom is ready to teach you. His Love is ready to reach you at the very core of your being. We can invite this Truth in. We can welcome God’s delight at knowing us fully and loving us without measure.

The hidden places of our heart may be where we hold fears and doubts. It may be a remembrance of mistakes or a feeling of shame or of confusion. We may bury deep inside a sense of unworthiness, or an awareness of base desires that we feel make us bad, unlovable.

But God wants to set His Truth within us. He wants to show us who He made and who He sees and who He loves. This Truth is that awareness of the Christ, our oneness with God as His child and His expression. This fact of our being is already within us. It isn’t new, but it is ready to be revealed and enjoyed.

Let’s know and joyfully accept that God delights in showing us what is wise and right and good. Let’s receive His loving intention willingly, openly, and gratefully.

“I am humbled and quieted in your presence. Like a contented child who rests on its mother’s lap, I’m your resting child and my soul is content in you.” (Psalms 131: 2, the Passion Translation)

The sweet confession is the psalmist’s grateful sigh. His metaphors reveal his humility, that readiness to settle into his divine Mother’s care and to feel at peace.

This is a gentle surrender of self, of consciousness and of being, to the perfect Love of God. The writer has stopped any seeking and striving, any need to prove himself to the world or to earn his worth through actions. Any of that human activity and worry and responsibility is simply washed away by the awareness of God.

We rest in this gentle presence as well. We are children of Her Love, always, and our innermost being, our soul, the reality of who we are, is content. We can release the need for personal control and allow ourselves to surrender to the sacred lullaby of Oneness with God. His strength and certainty is our safety and assurance. We can give up the grown-up ego, and gratefully rest in the arms of our Father-Mother Who truly knows us and eternally loves us.
