“Bless the Lord, because he has wondrously revealed his faithful love to me when I was like a city under siege!” (Psalms 31: 21, Common English Bible)

We may feel like we are under siege—under attack from individuals, circumstances, events that feel beyond our control. We may feel the things we value most are threatened, and that we have no means of defense and no strength for offense.

But God’s Love is with us in these times. His faithful, active, infinite presence has us truly surrounded. Nothing can really penetrate this protection, and within this embrace of God, we find answers, solace, and healing.

We can remember that we are not on our own when we feel beset with problems, whether in our experiences with others or within our own thoughts and bodies. God governs all, including our place, our being, our city. He is here to wondrously reveal His salvation to us. We are not alone. At the moment when we may feel the most vulnerable, there is God and His army of angels, the loving and right solutions, confidence, and clarity that can save us and set us free.

“Wisdom can make your life pleasant and lead you safely through it. Those who become wise are happy; wisdom will give them life.” (Proverbs 3: 17-18, Good News Translation)

This proverb would advise us that ignorance really is not bliss. To feel honest joy, we must gain wisdom. And wisdom is not merely accumulating information. It is discernment, good judgment, an understanding of things from both a higher and a deeper standpoint.

Without an aspiration after wisdom, we are really settling for less. If we take everything at face value or if we agree with what is fed to us in the realm of human opinion with its limits and fears, we miss out on a fuller life.

This wisdom is not something that must come with age and experience or that some have, and some don’t. True wisdom is spiritual. We gain it by our receptivity—our willingness to listen for that voice of God, of Truth—and then to trust what we hear.

God’s wisdom is ours freely. It leads us safely through our lives and feeds us with pleasing moments and new opportunities full of discovery, progress, and happiness.

“Can I go anywhere apart from Your Spirit? Is there anywhere I can go to escape Your watchful presence?” (Psalms 139: 7, the Voice Translation)

We can never be separate from God. His Spirit, His powerful qualities, are infinite. God’s active goodness is in every place, filling it. We are in God’s grace, in His hands, in His Love at all times.

It may seem that we are in a bind or in trouble. We may feel we are in a dark period of loss or confusion, or that we are confronted by obstacles and fears that appear insurmountable. But we can’t escape God’s presence. We can’t for an instant be separated from His care, His attention, His love for each of us.

And we can recognize God with us and let Him help us. We can remember that even if we feel faithless, unworthy, or ashamed, God does not judge us. We can’t escape His watchful eyes, and we should not wish to. He is with us to save us, to lead us out of those places of doubt and conflict and pain and into inspiration and solutions and peace.

“…love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest.” (Luke 6: 35)

We are born of God. We are the children of the Highest, the Supreme power and presence.

We will feel this heritage and its blessings, its might, its glory, when we remember where we came from and behave accordingly. As the offspring of divine Love, we must express this love. We must consciously radiate the qualities of God that are in us, this spiritual goodness which goes beyond human superficial niceness.

It is easy to love those that are lovable. But to love our enemies means drawing on the divine Source. It means going deeper and also higher, finding that true character within us that is born to love and loves freely, generously, with the intent to bring healing to all. This means that we do our best to love our enemies, and by loving them, no longer see them as enemies. This healing awareness brings us closer to God, to that peaceful oneness of being that is ours to experience.

We can give to others fearlessly and gratefully, and we can remember that our compensation is not in the return of the loan or gift. It is in the giving itself. This reward is great, and it never leaves us empty, but endows us with true riches and a grateful eagerness to continue to lovingly spread this spiritual wealth with all.

“Love has good manners and does not pursue selfish advantage. It is not touchy. It does not keep account of evil or gloat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it is glad with all good men when truth prevails.” (I Corinthians 13: 5-6, JB Phillips New Testament)

These biblical lessons on love continue to be powerful and relevant. As we love, so are we empowered, happy, helpful. But we must love rightly. We must recognize what love is and what it isn’t, and then we can really thrive. This understanding of love also enables us to feel more like our true selves, the very expressions and objects of God’s Love.

We can claim the Truth of Love and let go of the belief in a love that is full of ego and need, thinking more of self and less of others. Love is of God, and God’s ideas are One, unified, harmonious. To love with conditions, or for one’s own gain alone, is not love at all. We may be affectionate or charitable, but without a true generosity of heart, we are not really loving. We aren’t drawing from the great Source of Love that wins the day and brings us satisfaction and blessings.

Love is respectful and thinks of another’s feelings. Love is compassionate toward others and not overly sensitive. Love gives another the benefit of the doubt. It is a trust in God that allows one to feel less defensive and fearful in love, and more ready to give without reservations and to stay strong and calm no matter what.

It is easy to look at others and to envy them, even as we say we care about them. But to truly express love, we must see that another’s good doesn’t take away from our own. We can celebrate another’s success genuinely and be ready to receive our own just-right blessings without comparing.

God is Love. And He is plentiful in this Love. As we utilize it rightly, we will feel its grace and the joy it brings to every day.

“The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you.” (John 14: 26, the Message Bible)

Our loving Father-Mother has blessed us with a faithful friend. God provides us with this holy companion who knows us intimately and cares for us deeply, right where we are. We are never left without a guide who understands our needs and is ready to help. This Friend, the Christ, is near, and is the Truth speaking to us.

We have an awareness within us of who we really are, God’s ideas, and of the good that is ours to claim. And yet, we may forget this truth of life when times seem challenging. We may believe we haven’t a grasp on what we need to know and do and be in order to feel successful and happy and healthy.

But God, our Father, will never leave us alone, uncertain, lacking. God’s saving ideas can’t be lost in time or in circumstance. God provides us with the healing reminders we need, when we need them, like gentle encouragement from a friend who wants the best for us. We are indeed holding hands, walking with the Truth that is here, right here, to show us the way and to set us free.

“…let the beauty and grace of the Lord—our God—rest upon us and bring success to all we do; yes, bring success to all we do!” (Psalms 90: 17, the Voice Translation)

God’s active radiance is ready to be received and felt. We don’t have to strive to gain access to the beauty and grace of God. This verse reminds us that we can “let” it rest on us. We can bask in this loving Spirit of God and feel its blessings.

This release to God’s qualities and their power brings us success. As we accept the lovely goodness, the generous Love, that God has towards us, we are guided in our lives and supported in our endeavors. We can turn to the Source of Life, and feel this animating Spirit renew us and strengthen us.

This tender grace of God takes away the strain of needing to prove oneself, of trying to accomplish certain human goals according to some arbitrary, changing model of achievement. It leaves us free to enjoy real success and satisfaction, knowing that it flows forth from God, from the Truth, which is loving, powerful, right, and beautiful.

“Lord, You light my lamp; my God illuminates my darkness.” (Psalms 18: 28, Holman Christian Standard Bible)

The darkness may seem all-encompassing. Our night may feel long and lonely. But divine Love is right there. And this perfect and powerful Love is able to bring us light. God’s very presence and goodness illuminates the darkest times and places, breaking up the shadows and letting us see more clearly our safety, our peace, our way out of the gloom.

God is light and He gives us light. God’s Love for us ignites our lamps, gives us insight and inspiration, strength and motivation, to wake up and to go forward. His Spirit continually replenishes us so that we not only have enough light to see our own way, we also have enough to help others find theirs.

We don’t need to rely on our own ingenuity or willpower to get out of hard times. We can turn to the Source itself and receive that new and fresh enlightenment that God has for us. We can eagerly open our hearts to get fired up, warmed up, and aglow with God’s animating, illuminating, Life!

“The Spirit can make life. Sheer muscle and willpower don’t make anything happen. Every word I’ve spoken to you is a Spirit-word, and so it is life-making.” (John 6: 63, the Message Bible)

We can use willpower and our personal strength and ingenuity to try to make things happen. We can force life to fit into plans we have for ourselves and for others. These attempts to manipulate our experience are not true creation. They proceed from a limited sense of life, rather than from the real Source of Life.

Spirit, the Word of God, His light and Love, are the true creative power. God’s thoughts, His intentions, His Spirit of Truth, animate our purpose, feed us with energy, and bring us success. The spiritual qualities impelled by God’s intention are what empower us and protect us and cause us to really know what it feels like to live.

Our best human efforts can weary us and feel futile at times. But when we yield our egos to the power of Life itself, God, to reveal what is good and right for us, we gain peace and make progress. We receive insights that are healing. We are renewed and revived. We feel strong and certain and alive!

“Why are you cast down, O my inner self? And why should you moan over me and be disquieted within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall yet praise Him, Who is the help of my countenance, and my God.” (Psalms 42: 11, Amplified Bible Classic Edition)

We all have times when we feel despair and a yearning for peace. We may find it very easy to trust that voice in us that feels lost and to believe that is tells us the whole story.

But we can question this limited and fearful self. We can recognize that the devilish temptation to give in and give up is one that has no real validity and no genuine allure for us. We can start by listening for that wiser voice, the one that knows the infinite possibilities available for our comfort, our release, our freedom.

We can begin with hope. We can stop focusing on the dark and look up. We can be expectant of the breaking dawn—that inspiration, light, and healing will make itself known to us. God is ready to help us. We can be ready to let Him reveal His Spirit in us, that vital Life and tender Love that is stronger than our moaning, than the lure of hopelessness. We can gratefully praise God because with Him all things truly are possible, our salvation and joy is at hand.
