“Think long; think hard. When you are angry, don’t let it carry you into sin. When night comes, in calm be silent…Entrust yourself to the Eternal.” (Psalms 4: 4-5, the Voice Translation)

We can trust the Eternal. We can release our anger and our fears to God’s care. We can take a grateful pause for contemplation before we behave in ways that do not dignify us and that may cause more harm than good.

When we get riled or frustrated, feel defensive or accusatory, it is healing and ultimately more constructive to let our emotions simmer down. And rather than taking time to ruminate, to revisit troubling situations and restoke our anger (as we may be especially tempted to do in the night hours), let’s instead be calm and silent.

Allow the Truth some time to bring you peace, solutions, rest. Let God enfold you in His Love and let that powerful goodness ease tension and allow for the natural influx of reason and revelation. Let’s not make bad things worse by our focus on evil. Instead, let’s rest our sweet selves in God’s purpose, one meant to keep us calm, safe, fruitful, healthy, and happy.

“Love is more important than anything else. It is what ties everything completely together.” (Colossians 3: 13, Contemporary English Version)

Love is greater than anything. It is powerful, inexhaustible, and an absolute necessity for life.

We can get involved in personal and professional pursuits with conviction and drive. We can expand our thinking to embrace new ideas and gain new capacities. We can reason with others and come up with good solutions and understanding.

And yet, without love, these good aims and actions are missing what makes them really work to their highest potential, what brings progress and promotes genuine joy. Love unifies our causes and brings us together as individuals and as fellow children of God.

Divine Love received and expressed is mighty and tender. It awakens us to our best selves and gives us the energy and impetus to help others thrive as well. As we love, we feel love, and it revives us. We can never lack in love, because it comes from God, so it is abundant, available, and active.

Let’s be alive to Love’s presence. Let’s use love generously, receive it gratefully, and behold its ability to bring out right and healing results for us and for all.

“May the Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father (who has loved us and given us unending encouragement and unfailing hope by his grace) inspire you with courage and confidence in every good thing you say or do.” (II Thessalonians 2: 16-17, JB Phillips New Testament)

We have inspired support in our good endeavors. We can remember that we are not alone in our work and in our lives. We can turn to God for strength, releasing our doubts and our egos, and gain confidence in our ideas and pursuits.

God has loved us eternally. The Christ message has brought His goodness nearer to us, made this Love more humanly accessible, real, possible. God’s grace has shown us that we are worthy to live with dignity and with joy, to lead others by letting God lead us.

Human courage and confidence may feel like willful efforts. But true conviction comes from relying on God, being humbly receptive to all that He supplies to us so readily and graciously.

We can receive with gratitude this benediction and remember that God’s encouragement is unending. He made us to succeed, to live as the very ideas He saw fit to make and to sustain, to show forth His own qualities and His powerful purpose.

“He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” (II Corinthians 3: 6, New International Version)

You are well-equipped to share your goodness with others. We have this competency to minister, to care willingly and humbly for others, in our own unique and powerful way. This readiness is part of the covenant, the holy agreement between each of us and God.

This contract recognizes our Oneness with Him, our union with the divine qualities, the Spirit that is Life and Love. And this Spirit in us, this knowing in our hearts, is what brings out our best towards others. This consciousness inspires and uplifts us and gives us the strength and confidence to shine our light.

If we let this Spirit, this unencumbered joy and love, get tangled up in language, intellectual ideas, rules and dogma, we strangle it. The letter of good intentions becomes bound up in the unreliability of human opinions. It loses the spiritual impulse that is truly good and right and healing.

Let’s do our best to let inspiration lead us. Let’s minister from our honest hearts with the very Love that is also ministering to us.

“The night is nearly over, and the daylight is near, so let us discard the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13: 12, Holman Christian Standard Bible)

This verse gives us a wonderful sense of anticipation. It is full of hope, an expectation based on Truth, certainty.

We can recognize the light that is dawning in our hearts, the awareness of good, honesty, integrity, that beckons us to act in ways that contribute to the world, that lift others, and that honor our own best selves.

We are being encouraged to come out into the light of day and to leave behind behavior and thoughts that don’t dignify us or God and His purpose. The deeds of darkness referred to here can certainly be criminal behavior or things done with evil intent. But they can also be more subtle—acts of selfishness or deceit; those pursuits which are not only harmful to others, but not good for us either.

We can step out into the light and know we are safe. For our armor, our protection, is light itself. It is that radiance that reflects God’s own presence, His goodness, His Love, and the power and strength and confidence that come from these divine qualities. We can prepare for the sunrise and know that we belong in its glow. We always have so much to give, to receive, and to live in the bright promise of a new day.

“… both man and woman proceed from God and are His eternal children, belonging to no lesser parent.” (Science and Health, p. 529)

Our Father-Mother is God. While our human parents may certainly express beautiful qualities of fathering and mothering, they are also God’s children. We all proceed from God’s purpose. We are the intended and desired offspring of divine Love.

We belong to God. We don’t belong to another individual or to fate or to our bodies or to circumstances. God possesses our being, keeping it whole and safe and beautiful, just as He made it to be. We are sustained in God’s love and the expression of Her own nature, the very image of spiritual perfection, containing all that pleases God’s ideal specifications.

We are God’s eternal children. This means that we are eternal ourselves and that we are forever children. We are men and women in the way that God made us to be. We are perfectly balanced in the spiritual qualities of male and female. But we remain God’s little ones who He continues to parent—to watch over, to tenderly love, to instruct, to lead, to protect, and to smile over with pure approval and genuine pleasure.

“‘Now’, cried the apostle, ‘is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation,’ — meaning, not that now men must prepare for a future-world salvation, or safety, but that now is the time in which to experience that salvation in spirit and in life.”
(Science and Health, p. 39)

Let’s take the inspired apostle at his word. Now!

We may think of salvation as something that happens after death or that is contingent upon some further coming of a savior or aligning of the stars. But the day of salvation is a day of realization.

The Truth of being will never be any truer than it is right now. The Christ came to human thought and revealed reality—man and woman at one with God, made in His image, and beloved. These facts were not taught and demonstrated to tease us with something presently intangible. Jesus came to show us that the accepted time, the time of acceptance of salvation, is right now.

God’s Love for us is here. This powerful affection is infinite Life. If we deny this and push it off into the future, we miss out on this day—one that is already full of goodness, light, and life.

Let’s not spend our days in preparation or anticipation. Let’s not take this moment for granted or consider it small and inconsequential. Today is the day. Now is the time to experience this salvation, this safety, this fearless understanding of infinite Life as ours right here, right now.

“A generous person will be blessed.” (Proverbs 22: 9, New English Translation)

Such a simple yet significant statement. Generosity is an amazing human quality. It offers up what one has for the benefit of another. Generosity goes beyond mere giving. It is giving liberally, and with no feeling of loss in doing so.

To be generous also means to be free from smallness of mind or character; magnanimous. It is acting or thinking with a spirit of love, without judgment or pettiness. True generosity expresses the qualities of God. It recognizes the available, inexhaustible richness of goodness and love, and so shares abundantly with no fear or need for recompense.

We can afford to be generous because we have so much to give—of our hearts and of our unique gifts—and the Source is boundless, continually replenished. The blessing of being generous is certainly the very awareness of this fact of spiritual abundance, of wholeness, and of the treasure of feeling and expressing Love without measuring it out, without judging its recipients.

There is a natural and priceless satisfaction in doing good, in sharing sincerely and freely.

“Hold me, and I will be safe, and I will always pay attention to your commands.” (Psalms 119: 117, Good News Translation)

This prayer gets at the heart of devotion. When we are able to really feel God’s care, His affection and protection, we gratefully pay attention to His direction for us.

Our God is Love. He is holding on to us, embracing us. This infinite divine goodness is present and powerful, and we can yield to its healing grace willingly. In fact, as we are alert to God, we discover His loving arms around us. When we stop denying His presence, we find that He is with us and that His kindness, attention to us, is unflinching, strong, at hand.

We all want to feel safe and loved. God is able to bring these qualities to us like no person or material thing can do—timely, abundantly, wisely. The Eternal One encircles, undergirds, upholds, uplifts, and leads us. We are held securely in His Love, and we can trust His guidance and follow it, naturally and gratefully.

“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” (II Corinthians 9: 15)

Gratitude is healing. To give thanks is to become aware of the good that is present. At its best, it is an appreciation not only of physical blessings we may have, but also a deeper cherishing of those qualities of Life that are the most enriching.

We can celebrate with thanksgiving for that “unspeakable gift” that is God and His goodness—the Love that is divine, forever present, and expressed in us and for us. This gift is one that is beyond words. So, while it is lovely to articulate our gratitude by saying grace or voicing prayers, our thanks is truly greatest dwelling sincerely in our hearts.

This genuine gratitude for beauty, joy, kindness, inspiration, the transforming and cleansing power of Truth in our lives, is impactful. It leads us to be and to do good. It keeps us in touch with what is the most real and lasting and powerful.

Let’s give thanks to God for creating us so gloriously, and for that light of Truth that reveals to us the spiritual riches that we truly have in us and around us, today and every day.

Happy Thanksgiving!
