“Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but [imitate] what is good. The one who practices good [exhibiting godly character, moral courage and personal integrity] is of God; the one who practices [or permits or tolerates] evil has not seen God [he has no personal experience with Him and does not know Him at all].” (III John: 11, Amplified Bible)

The ability and desire to do right comes from God. Goodness is our true nature, and to honor this quality is an indication that we have seen God. We recognize goodness in others and want to be better ourselves, because we are becoming acquainted with divine Love. We have experienced this light in our hearts, and we yearn to feel it more by expressing it.

It may seem that those who do evil or let the ego rule their lives are getting by just fine. We may even feel inclined to imitate those who take the low road or follow their baser desires, to be more like some who may achieve fame or notoriety through their misdeeds or lack of real integrity or care. But this verse reminds us that to do evil is to not really know God. It is to be unaware of the grandeur and glory of divine Love, of God’s harmonious control and what it can do for us and our lives.

Those who permit or tolerate evil have forgotten this infinite Love that is so healing and true and powerful. Let’s remember that we are beloved and consciously show forth God in all that we do. Let’s be models and examples and so turn others from that ignorance of God to see Love in action, and to seek to express it in their own lives.

“Who could ever separate us from the endless love of God’s Anointed One? Absolutely no one! For nothing in the universe has the power to diminish his love toward us. Troubles, pressures, and problems are unable to come between us and heaven’s love. …They are all impotent to hinder omnipotent love.” (Romans 8: 35, the Passion Translation)

We are always in Love! We truly can’t be separated from that infinite, endless, perfect Love of God for us. This divine affection transcends limits of time and space. It is not hindered by people and their actions. It doesn’t require an alignment of circumstances to be full and complete and powerful.

It may seem that human troubles, stress, and fear can take that Love away from us or that our own behavior can diminish it, but God’s Love doesn’t have conditions. It is omnipotent and omnipresent. God’s Love created us, and He made us to be loved, lovable, cherished, worthy.

Our joyous job is to accept this Love. It is to awake to its potency and its limitlessness. It is to claim the presence of Love rather than to give our attention and obedience to fear and pressure. Nothing in the universe can separate us from this holy, healing Love. It is with us fully and actively, yesterday, today, and forever.

“We sustain Truth, not by accepting, but by rejecting a lie.” (Science and Health, page 357)

We can be alert to what we are agreeing with. When Truth sings in our heart, when we feel that resonating freedom and peace that is God’s goodness announcing itself, we can accept it willingly and gratefully.

And then we can sustain that Truth and its active power in our lives by staying awake. We can conscientiously reject the opposition to Truth, the lies that may try to drown out our song and darken our experience. We have the right to deny those troubling, diminishing, negative thoughts a presence in our minds. We can instead continue to honor the Truth that is solid and saving.

Those lies attempt to counter the real spiritual facts. So, when we hear those arguments for our worthlessness, failings, sufferings, and those in the world, we can turn those right around and find the Truth that is hopeful, healing, and right for us. The untruth about us can be rejected for what it is—a lie—but it can also help guide us to that specific spiritual fact that is the very balm we need in that moment. Guilt is canceled by innocence. Fear is annulled by Love. Vulnerability is overturned by wholeness, integrity, strength.

Let’s stop believing lies and stay faithful to the Truth, God’s own eternal and present and sustained reality of you and of all.

“Plant your feet firmly therefore within the freedom that Christ has won for us, and do not let yourselves be caught again in the shackles of slavery.” (Galatians 5: 1, JB Phillips New Testament)

The Christ has revealed a new freedom for each of us. Our release is permanent. We can accept this good news and live like the free men and women that we truly are.

Those shackles are not legitimate, and we can resist the lure of believing that we must succumb to such limitation and degradation. We can plant our feet firmly, legitimately, on the Truth that Jesus came to show us. We can remember that we are children of God, not of matter, fear, malice, anger, shame. We can base this conviction on what Jesus taught and proved, that invincible goodness that is ours innately to know and to live.

Let’s be awake to the world’s attempts to get us to believe we are less than free, less than capable, less than lovely, less than worthy. Let’s accept our liberty from the constraints of complaint, competition, envy, negativity, and be the sons and daughters of God that we are. Then let’s awake others to their true freedom through our love, our awareness, our compassion, our grateful and gracious lives.

“Each of you is now a new person. You are becoming more and more like your Creator, and you will understand him better.” (Colossians 3: 10, Contemporary English Version)

You are a new person today. Each moment we are increasing in awareness, experience, knowledge. This growth goes on humanly, of course, but our real progress is spiritual, and this is what truly renews us.

For moving through time can seem to mean both advancement and decline. But spiritual growth is a constant becoming. It is that continual opening of self to the good news, the reality of who we are as God’s own ideas. As we recognize more of God’s character—goodness, Love, immortal Life, Truth, justice—we begin to see what is real and enduring. We realize that those very qualities that we love are what we are made of.

And this true you is always brand new, for God is ageless and timeless, and His ideas express that. We can feel free to let go of the burdensome view or ourselves and of life. We can be open to believing, trusting, releasing ego and fear, and waking up to Soul’s promises.

This verse announces that we are now a new person. We are not waiting for this refreshing reality. We can accept this exciting fact today and be ready for tomorrow’s inspiration and exultation.

“I chose you to bring justice, and I am here at your side. I selected and sent you and my promise of hope to the nations.” (Isaiah 42: 6, Contemporary English Version)

This may seem like a high calling for someone else. But it is really God’s beckoning to all those who hear Him, who are listening, and who believe what they hear.

For the Christ, the timeless idea, preceded Jesus’ birth and continues to live with us and in us today. The Christ is the Truth of God made known to humanity, and our consciousness of the power of this goodness and Love, means we are indeed chosen. We are selected by our willingness to bring justice, to act as messengers and examples of kindness, peace, reason, as well as gratitude and joy.

And God, Almighty goodness, is at our side. It isn’t some personal task to promote justice in the world, frantically waving a banner and fighting all the way. We have God with us. That fullness of Love and Life, of strength and protection, is our defense and our efficacy. We have God’s own promise of hope, and we can rejoice that this promise includes us, uplifts us, embraces us, and empowers us to be the called, the chosen, the very ones whom God trusts to express and to accept His saving grace.

“Be humble. Be gentle. Be patient. Tolerate one another in an atmosphere thick with love. Make every effort to preserve the unity the Spirit has already created, with peace binding you together.” (Ephesians 4: 2-3, the Voice Translation)

These instructions for unity are surely inspiring, but they do seem to require much of us. There’s a sense that we have to become something special, saintly, perfect in order to express this tolerance and cultivate peace.

But we can recognize the presence of God, that He is that atmosphere, filling all space, including our hearts, with Love. We can realize that divine Love is strong and ready and that to claim it and honor it and share it is a powerful gift to us and to others. We should be eager to grab hold of that gift and to do all that we can to preserve what God has already created. Unity.

For this harmonious oneness is not some impossible dream. It is what the Spirit, God, already made. We are, not shall be, one with God, with His Love. So, we are all one with each other through that Love. It is an awareness of this universal brotherhood that awes and humbles us and causes us to want to be gentle and patient.

Let’s encourage and perpetuate an atmosphere that is “thick with love,” with healing, with peace, with connection, with gratitude, with joy.

“Blessed [spiritually calm with life-joy in God’s favor] are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they will [express His character and] be called the sons of God.” (Matthew 5: 9, Amplified Bible)

What a joy and an honor to be a peacemaker! Jesus assures us here that to be actively engaged in bringing peace to others is a rich blessing.

As we recognize ourselves as the children of God, we naturally want to and can express those qualities that are unifying, calming, comforting, peace-bringing. We are able to fully utilize God’s powerful Spirit within us and to make a difference in the world around us. We can confidently live our lives bearing witness to the fact that we are all brothers and sisters, born of God, One in Spirit and in Love.

And acknowledging that mission to unify and to harmonize, we can’t help but feel the blessing that is amplified in this verse: spiritual calmness with life joy in God’s favor. Making and maintaining peace brings us that tranquility within, that joy at being and doing what we were made to do as the sons and daughters of infinite Love.

“The Lord will fight for you, and all you have to do is keep still.” (Exodus 14: 14, Good News Translation)

Well, keeping still isn’t always the easiest thing to do! It may seem that the only way we are going to get what we need, gain some sense of control, or come to a resolution on things, is to keep up the personal activity. We tend to think that it’s our job to defend ourselves against the world and circumstances. This kind of uncertain fighting can be exhausting.

But we have a recourse, and knowing this, we can keep still. As we recognize that all the human wrangling and shouting, the worry and the ruminating, isn’t bringing us victory—the victory that is peace—we are ready to stop and to let ourselves be saved the right way. The easier way. The more successful way.

The Lord will fight for you. We have the divine Principle that is justice, Truth, kindness, mercy, and infinite power, on our side. As we keep still, we can feel and know this active presence, and then calmness, clarity, and inspiration come. With all the fear and blame, shame, doubt, and defensiveness released, God’s gracious goodness is revealed, right where we are.

We can keep still, gratefully. We can breathe a sigh of relief that our lives are not about having all the answers, the right weapons, all our ducks in a row. Our lives are reliant on God, the wise Almighty Who effectively, immediately, actively, and perfectly loves you.

“All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it.” (I Corinthians 10: 13, the Message Bible)

The human experience can seem full of challenges, burdens, reasons for doubt and disappointment. But here we have a saving admonition, holy advice for a ready release, the uplift that can set us free and lead us progressively forward.

People may let us down. They may not live up to our expectations. They may desert us or misunderstand us or fail to give us what we think we need or deserve. But God is not so limited. His Love and His awareness and His presence is infinite, active, and ours to realize and lean on. God knows you and your needs. His spiritual qualities, at hand and abundant, are the provision for all that seems to be lacking.

When we feel we just can’t do anymore, are stretched beyond our mental or physical abilities, we have our Father-Mother to inspire us, energize us, and lift those burdens naturally in a way that only He can. We can turn away from any self-doubt or willful pushing forward, and rely on divine Love, God, Who is right here with all that He has.

God is with you always, and He will never let you down. Relax. Rely. Rejoice.
