“Let me emphasize this: As you yield to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self-life.” (Galatians 5:16, The Passion Translation)
Yielding is a powerful and wonderful thing! In this translation, Paul is really trying to drive this point home. He wants to emphasize the fact that surrendering to God’s life for us, His presence and power in us, will never leave us clinging to the way things were.
On the contrary, as we let go of the preconceived sense of ourselves and our lives, what we believe we want and need and are, we discover something much more satisfying. The focus on self and matter, on what others think of us, or on proving ourselves to be humanly successful and great, just naturally falls away. Those old desires no longer drive us, because they never really were in our hearts to begin with.
For God’s dynamic experience—the spiritual consciousness of life as full and fulfilling, as the expression of goodness and love—has always been our true purpose. This awareness of and connection to something higher and holier was put in our hearts from the beginning. Awakening to this feels like a release. The burden of ego, of being what we think we should be, dissolves. We are carried forward in the dynamism of a life that is good, progressive, pleasing, and divinely natural.
