extravagantlove

“Be imitators of God in everything you do, for then you will represent your Father as his beloved sons and daughters. And continue to walk surrendered to the extravagant love of Christ…” (Ephesians 5: 1-2, the Passion Translation)

It seems to me if we truly yield to the second sentence of this verse, it will feel natural to do the first. As we daily surrender our doubts and fears, our control and ego, to God’s extravagant love, we can’t help but feel and act like His children.

The awareness of our relationship with God, that oneness that Christ taught and demonstrated so beautifully, keeps us on track to do the good, sincerely, that is truly natural to us. We can gratefully acknowledge this Love as being ours and at hand. This gives us the freedom, energy, and desire to share that Love in the world.

And in doing so, we are being like God. As we Love one another and express goodness in all that we do—great things and small—we are imitating Him, representing His dignity, His power, His grace, accurately and constructively. We are shining His light, knowing its boundless Source, and proving God’s presence in the world just as it is felt in our hearts.
