“Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.” (Matthew 7:12, The Message)

This golden rule really is simple, although we may not always find it easy to do.

Yet, it is a basic principle that is reliable in that it steers us to better choices, those thoughts and behaviors, which naturally result in blessings for all. Starting from that standpoint of what we would want—what would make us feel truly happy, whole, appreciated, loved, provided for—starts with God. It begins with a premise of goodness and love. And when we then turn from our wants to serving another, God’s law lovingly supports us.

Let’s do more than think about ourselves and wish another to do us good. Let’s instead grab the initiative and do a kindness to that other individual or group. Let’s be proactive in our giving. Of course, we don’t presume what others might specifically want or need, but when we look to the qualities we ourselves would like to feel—respect, compassion, receptivity, tenderness, trustworthiness—we can begin to do and say, to give and express, what will be most appreciated as well as healing for everyone.

It’s a good rule of thumb. This standard of both thinking and behaving aligns with Love’s purpose and it comes with God’s backing—the capacity to do naturally what He would have us do for others and for ourselves.
