“Do not let evil defeat [conquer; overcome] you, but defeat [conquer; overcome] evil by doing good.” (Ephesians 12: 21, Expanded Bible)

Sometimes it feels like the only way to combat the evil, the injustice, the darkness, we see in the world and in our personal lives, is to lash back in anger. Self-justification is alluring, and we may feel that our outrage is reasonable and necessary.

And yet, how much good does striking back, either literally or in our thoughts, really do us or anyone else? We can go into attack mode, and yet that leaves us fully engaged in conflict and hate when these are, in truth, the very things we likely oppose. Righteous anger seems honorable, but it should only motivate us to rise higher so that we may overcome not only the trouble we see, but the feelings within that are uncomfortable and unhealthy.

Let’s defeat the evil by doing good. Let’s remember that goodness and love have true healing power, and that while we can be alert to evil and ignorance, the solution is not to throw gasoline on the fire. Instead we can douse it with the cleansing grace of Love, kindness, gentleness. We honor God by relaxing our clenched fists and using them to hold a hand, caress an ache, and to uplift one another and by doing so, ourselves as well.

Daily Inspiration, February 27th

“Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.” (Galatians 6: 4-5, New Living Translation)

This is sage advice. Comparing ourselves to others is a distraction from doing our own work and doing it well. When we look away from our tasks, we are likely to make mistakes and miss details. A carpenter checking out another craftsman’s work while trying to wield a hammer, will likely miss the nail and maybe hit something unintended!

This biblical admonition is practical, but it also resonates with spiritual truth. We are each responsible for our own conduct, as the message says, and our true job satisfaction is found as we remember that it is all really between you and God. Your employment and enjoyment are specifically designed by God to please Him and to also please you, who He knows so well.

Trust God enough to trust yourself. Your art, your expressiveness, your ideas, your output, may not look like anyone else’s. It is incomparably yours, and it is a gift of God to you. The unique way in which you radiate God’s goodness and utilize His qualities, is just what you need to be doing. No one can do your work for you. And no one can do your work better than you can.

Keep your eyes on your own paper, as my grammar school teachers used to say! You don’t need to copy or to cheat or to compare. You have God guiding your hand to do what only you can magnificently do!

Daily Inspiration, February 22nd

“Heaven is not a locality, but a divine state of Mind in which all the manifestations of Mind are harmonious and immortal, because sin is not there and man is found having no righteousness of his own, but in possession of ‘the mind of the Lord,’ as the Scripture says.” (Science and Health, page 291)

Heaven is not a location or a plane of existence beyond our reach today. Heaven is a state of thought. We achieve a taste of this paradise in each moment that we connect consciously with the divine Mind, God.

For heaven is creation as God conceived it. He is the One Mind and His ideas constitute the realm of reality. These thoughts are controlled by His wisdom and His Love and are without limits. We may believe that we are separate from this blissful state of being, but that is perception, not Truth.

If we yield up the ego that agrees to limits and listen to that consciousness that is universal Truth—one and pure and righteous—we perceive heaven. It isn’t in the material world to be found nor can it be lost in matter. It is sustained in that “mind of the Lord” that we possess. We have access to this heavenly perspective, because we are one with God, with Truth, with Life, and with Love.

Harmony and immortality are not behind some pearly gates. They are already in your thought to be realized. Trust those holy moments that you feel at times. These are more real and right and healing and true than the parade of earthly concepts that want to keep you anxious and small. Listen to the heart and soul that God gave you, the one that knows that peace is here and ours to realize, in this moment, on this day, in our expansive and awakened thinking!

Daily Inspiration, February 20th

“As for me, I shall see Your face in righteousness; I will be [fully] satisfied when I awake [to find myself] seeing Your likeness.” (Psalms 17: 15, Amplified Bible)

Isn’t it wonderful to wake up to a day feeling excited, happy, grateful? Does it sometimes seem like those days are not as plentiful as we’d like?

Let’s see the value of waking in the way that the psalmist expresses here. We can awake to the thought of God, seeing His face—His loving and faithful and approving countenance—before us. We can choose to turn toward Truth and Life and Love when we begin our day, rather than to let the mortal mind set an agenda, one that is uncertain, troubling, or dull.

We have a choice in our days and in moments of our life to wake up to what is true. It is seeing that in God’s face is our very own selfhood. We are the reflection of His qualities and His contentment. We are His image and likeness. Our satisfaction does not come from being persons that have a certain goal to hit, a personality or body that is ideal according to a biased human view, a presentation of perfection as the world might measure it.

Our satisfaction is awakening to see God and to recognize that we are just like Him. We are His own idea expressed, and He is pleased in us, in this moment, in every moment, because we are what He saw fit to make.

Let’s see God’s face rightly. See His smile upon you, His loving tender regard for who you really are, and His assurance that today is your day, one full of the very light that is the radiance of you!

Daily Inspiration, February 15th

“And [Jesus] woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the waves, ‘Hush now! Be still!’ The wind dropped and everything was very still. ‘Why are you so frightened? What has happened to your faith?!’ he asked them.” (Mark 4: 39-40, JB Phillips New Testament)

The disciples were freaking out. They were in a boat with their Master and a great storm rose up, battering the craft and shattering their peace of mind. Jesus remained asleep as this tempest tossed them about.

Eventually, the frightened students woke their teacher up, frantic and disturbed. Jesus remained peaceful. With a word, he stilled the storm, and turned to his disciples with the question of their faith, a topic he had just been teaching about earlier that day.

Jesus wasn’t being harsh with them. He simply expected that his lessons to them would have been their refuge of calm and trust. Jesus was undisturbed because he knew that a physical storm and a storm of fear are no power against the Truth of God and His infinite presence and Love.

The winds and waves of sense and circumstance, of doubt and anxiety, are merely appearances of trouble. Jesus wasn’t ignoring the storm, just knocked out and sleeping through something terrible. He knew that the real was the still, the calm, the protection, the guidance, the infinite serenity of God.

Let’s know this as well. Let’s take Jesus at his proven word, keep the faith, and know our true dominion through the power of God and His Love.

“Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals.” (Science and Health, page 13)

Divine Love doesn’t play favorites. This perfect and infinite Love doesn’t exclude or neglect or express in a limited or selfish way. God is Love, and this Love is ours at all times, fully expressed and within us as well as surrounding us.

Valentine’s Day is a sweet time to share our appreciation for individuals in our lives. But I also like to think of it as a reminder of Love itself. It is an occasion to cherish Love’s Source, availability, precision, power, saving goodness, and caring and protecting presence.

We are expressions of divine Love, not the personal receivers or givers of it. We all radiate God’s Love, as the proof and object of His own intention. We are a part of this universal and powerful affection, and it can’t divide us, nor does it compete. No one is left out or less encompassed in this embrace. Each of us can feel that spiritual Love in just the way we may need, in each moment. God knows us as we are and comes to us with accuracy and immediacy.

Let’s accept and rejoice in this impartial and universal Love and share it freely and generously with all, today and every day!

Daily Inspiration, February 8th

“With all your heart you must trust the Lord and not your own judgment. Always let him lead you, and he will clear the road for you to follow.” (Proverbs 3: 5-6, Contemporary English Version)

We have an all-seeing, all-knowing guide. God has a perfect plan for us and knows every detail for carrying it out. We can trust Him fully in every moment to be faithful, right, and active on our behalf.

Let’s recognize this infinite presence and reliance. Let’s do this with our whole hearts, not only as an added thing, a slim prayer thrown into the mix of human pros and cons, judgments, opinions, fears. Let’s trust God because He is trustworthy. Our human sense of things gets tangled in limits and sense testimony. We jump to conclusions based on what matter is telling us. We feel either confined or rushed by time.

But God is boundless intelligence. He is free of those restrictive thoughts. He can see clear the way that He made, and we can let Him show that way to us. We don’t need to get ahead of God, of Life and Love, but to stay in step with Him. Put your hand firmly in God’s grasp. Release your worries. Trust Him with all your heart and He will reveal the clear road for you in each moment, with power and with Love.

Daily Inspiration, February 6th

“Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.” (Genesis 13: 8)

Abram spoke these healing words to his nephew, Lot. There had been some bad blood, it seemed, between these family members and it had set them and those who worked with them at odds. Abram saw through this devilish suggestion of divisiveness. He knew the truth.

They were brethren. And I think this thought went deeper than the sense of their human familial lineage. It was a recognition that this was not a proper way to live as fellow children of God. If they were to continue worshipping their one God, obedience to Him meant an awareness of who they were, who we all are in Truth: God’s children, and therefore family.

We can take this honest stand with God and refuse to allow strife, dissent, blame, vengeance, to keep us from being brothers and sisters. By our forgiveness and our love; by our yielding up our personal biases for the truth of our heritage, we are living in accord with God’s law and with healing results. For when we acknowledge the Truth and live it, we are being ourselves. This is individual freedom and it also brings blessings and peace to all.

Daily Inspiration, February 1st

“Rain and snow fall from the sky. But they don’t return without watering the earth
that produces seeds to plant and grain to eat. That’s how it is with my words. They don’t return to me without doing everything I send them to do.”
(Isaiah 55: 10-11, Contemporary English Version)

God fulfills His intention. Just like the rains that fall and water the crops, so God’s Word, His heavenly proclamation of goodness, Life, fruitfulness, is powerfully active. God’s ideal ideas are the rain and reign of Truth, and so they are promises, guarantees.

We are both the recipients and the expression of God’s purpose. His divine demand is that we bless and are blessed. He requires us to be what He caused us to be and to make His glory known upon the earth. When God’s word is revealed to us, we can trust it to guide us forward and to accomplish the perfect result.

It isn’t really about what we personally aspire to. It isn’t about striving to complete something, alone and uncertain. God’s loving power and wisdom have provided us with the sun and the rain to nurture our budding ideas, and He is also the one to bring them forth into full blossom.

Trust the inspirations you have. Trust yourself to hear them and to know what matters and what feels right and real. And above all, trust God Whose angel inspirations are telling your heart His own purpose and Who can surely finish what He started in His  powerful, precise, and loving way.

Daily Inspiration, January 30th

“God has made us what we are, and in our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do.” (Ephesians 2: 10, Good News Translation)

We are made by God and are His own children. Our awareness of this divine nature and the oneness that Jesus revealed and practiced, puts us on course to do good and to thrive.

You were built for a life of good deeds. This doesn’t mean we all play the same part and serve in the same way. Our fruitful life is uniquely ours and one that utilizes our gifts in the way God has already planned for us. We all have a calling, whether it looks like a traditional ministry or not. We were made of God’s own qualities—Truth, Life, Love—and this means we were crafted to be powerful expressions of His own intention.

Recognize that you were born to do amazing things with Love. And by that, I mean, with Love—with God Who is Love as the Source and intelligence and capacity. Christ Jesus proved that nothing could be done without God. But with Him, all things could be accomplished—things that changed the world as it was viewed at the time.

This is our example. As we realize our own connection with God and yield to His plan, we see a path revealed in work He has already prepared, along with a bounteous supply of His Love that we can enjoy immediately and use gratefully and generously each day.
