“And how does a man benefit if he gains the whole world and loses his soul in the process?” (Mark 8: 36, the Living Bible)

Let’s tend to our souls. Let care for the inner spirit, the essence of who we are individually, and awake to our greater purpose.

It may seem like gaining riches and fame, ease in the material world, is the ultimate goal. And there certainly isn’t anything wrong with prosperity. But our motives and methods make a difference. For to seek gain at the expense of others, is costly to our souls. It moves against that love within that makes us whole and keeps us secure in our being.

If we seek power in order to feel we can control others, to show we are better than them, or to achieve accolades, we deny God Who is good and the only power. We try to take what isn’t ours to have, and in doing so, we lose the integrity that is also our protection. We may gain attention, but we lose our faith, our goodness, our security, and our hearts.

Let’s pause and strive for what is right and good, knowing we can achieve more with God and His intention, and we can keep our souls intact as well.

“And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord.” (Zechariah 8: 17)

The Lord is quite clear here. He is telling the people of Jerusalem how best to please Him. God is straightforward and specific with them on what is intolerable to Him.

These words articulate the law of God, good. They tell the ancient followers and us today that if we are to feel like children of God—free, blessed, loved, worthy—then we would do best to give up those actions and thoughts that deny this heritage.

We may think it’s okay to think badly of others if we keep it to ourselves and don’t act upon our feelings toward them. But if we imagine evil, we are harboring ill will, wishing for another to suffer, and this goes against God’s purpose, against the will of Love. These imaginings do not honor God, nor do they give us the peace that we truly seek. Likewise, to be dishonest, or to make false claims, is to go against God’s nature, and so to lose the power of Truth and the blessings it naturally brings.

God is not asking us to be something we are not. He wants us to be who we truly are—loving, honest, kind, the active expression of His own true wisdom and glorious goodness.

“I am the Lord All-Powerful. So don’t depend on your own power or strength, but on my Spirit.” (Zechariah 4: 6, Contemporary English Version)

We often like to feel that we can handle things. We value our own independence, our abilities, our intelligence. Even when we feel less than capable, there is a tendency to believe that we must prove that we can manage everything, that we are strong and in control.

But this human view of things, while in some ways admirable, is flawed, burdensome, and unwise overall. For it doesn’t honor God. When we claim personal power, we deny omnipotence, and deprive ourselves of that true energy that can bring all things to pass rightly, timely, and without the ego’s limited perspective and unreliable resources.

God’s Spirit has no limitations. He is boundless in His goodness, His presence, and His righteousness. We can let go of the need to be god to our own lives and to others, and rest humbly and gratefully in God’s strength, His power, His control. We can do this because this is wisdom. It gets the job done.

And we can rejoice that the Spirit of God on which we can rely is also Love. He is trustworthy, perfect, and He accomplishes for us what is progressive, and which gives us freedom and peace as well.

“The lightnings and thunderbolts of error may burst and flash till the cloud is cleared and the tumult dies away in the distance. Then the raindrops of divinity refresh the earth. As St. Paul says: ‘There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God’ (of Spirit).” (Science and Health, p. 288)

The storms of life around us and the tumult in our thoughts can feel overwhelming. It may feel like we are in the midst of destructiveness. Fear and discouragement may overtake us, with hope seeming dim at the very least.

But just as the earth can look even more pristine and the sky more vibrant after a storm comes through, so we can see these darker hours as leading us to a resolving, a rest, a new outlook. We can be alert and thoughtful in the shadowy times, but unafraid. The mortal scene bashes away at us, trying to get our attention. But we are well-fortified. The noise and flash may be distracting, but it can’t harm us.

Let’s be serene in the darkness, because we know the light is at hand. The raindrops of divinity are God’s own inspirations, His loving actions, washing us and the world clean, opening the way to a new day. We can relax and accept the peace that is always ours, in both sunshine and in storms.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)

We all can have days when we feel empty. There may be a loss of energy or of hope or of comfort. We may not feel we understand enough or have enough confidence or wisdom to be helpful to others or to ourselves.

But Jesus gives us promises in his beatitudes. He reminds us in this verse that it isn’t about being humanly perfect, having great intelligence, or having always lived a perfect life. Our very awareness that we need God, that we seek the nutriment of what is good and right, is enriching. It is fulfillment.

We can recognize that this humble sense of spiritual seeking reveals a feast. As our hearts reach for more than what the eyes can see or what human opinions would tell us, we gain insights and inspiration. As we do our best to turn away from the limited, from the ego, we find God, the Life that provides for our needs, brings us peace, and causes us to naturally progress as well.

“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.” (Psalms 69: 30)

We can rejoice in our holiday celebrations on this Thanksgiving Day. We can be grateful for the provision of good that we have—food, family, community. We can take a moment to step away from the daily grind of work and worry to pause, breathe, and remember our blessings.

And we can actively acknowledge their source. We can do more than be happy about a day off or a hearty meal. We can praise God for the abundance of His qualities of good that make all things possible and pleasing. We can be open about our thanks by singing our praises, aloud or in our full hearts, honoring God by recognizing His Fatherhood, Motherhood, Love.

Our thanksgiving magnifies Him. As we are grateful, more of God’s attributes are seen. There is more Love made known, expressed and felt. We see more of the vibrancy of God’s being in those around us, in the beauty of our experiences, in nature. We see more control and order and peacefulness.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and truly enjoy giving thanks! It is a song, a rejoicing, a powerful time of grace and goodness we can celebrate all year long.

“Yes, dear friends, we are already God’s children, right now, and we can’t even imagine what it is going to be like later on. But we do know this, that when he comes we will be like him, as a result of seeing him as he really is.” (I John 3: 2, the Living Bible)

We don’t have to wait for some glory moment to become children of God, or to regain some lost blessing. We are already and always and now the very offspring of the Almighty one. This is our heritage, and nothing will ever change this divine fact.

We can acknowledge this and open our thoughts and our hearts to even greater realizations. There is a rich understanding in store for us beyond our imaginations. We will come to see what it really means to be God’s children. As we progressively recognize more of God’s true nature, see the love, goodness, immortality that Jesus demonstrated, we will surely awake to our true selves.

For we are this Christly idea! We are the very evidence of God’s Life and Love. And while this may seem difficult to grasp now, it is the reality of our being. We can expect to see clearly our own identity, to know ourselves as God knows us—in all our beauty, purity, wisdom, and joy.

“Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” (Romans 12: 15)

This is a call to active empathy. We are asked to recognize our connection with one another and to see people where they are—with compassion, kindness, and a sense of unity.

We don’t need to pity others or get caught up in any darkness they may be feeling and make it our own. We can keep our spiritual poise and still be truly present with others in their troubles, having that inspired understanding of what they may be going through.

Likewise, we can be happy for others and rejoice with them, without a sense of envy or competition. We can let another’s pure gladness flow over onto us as well. We can give up an attachment to our own complaints and allow ourselves the natural pleasure of laughter and light and uplift.

We all have different experiences, but we are all one in God’s Life and Love. We can let our hearts be one. We can demonstrate the healing and strengthening Love of God in our human moments, when we grieve as well as when we celebrate.

“Be imitators of God in everything you do, for then you will represent your Father as his beloved sons and daughters. And continue to walk surrendered to the extravagant love of Christ…” (Ephesians 5: 1-2, the Passion Translation)

It seems to me if we truly yield to the second sentence of this verse, it will feel natural to do the first. As we daily surrender our doubts and fears, our control and ego, to God’s extravagant love, we can’t help but feel and act like His children.

The awareness of our relationship with God, that oneness that Christ taught and demonstrated so beautifully, keeps us on track to do the good, sincerely, that is truly natural to us. We can gratefully acknowledge this Love as being ours and at hand. This gives us the freedom, energy, and desire to share that Love in the world.

And in doing so, we are being like God. As we Love one another and express goodness in all that we do—great things and small—we are imitating Him, representing His dignity, His power, His grace, accurately and constructively. We are shining His light, knowing its boundless Source, and proving God’s presence in the world just as it is felt in our hearts.

“Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.” (Isaiah 48: 17)

God gives us a definition of Himself in this passage. He describes clearly His relationship with each of us and clarifies any misconceptions.

Our God does not punish us. He redeems us. He saves us from the wrong way, rescues us, and reminds us who we truly are—His own children. God doesn’t leave us alone to figure things out. He doesn’t make us prove that we are good enough to succeed through our own wits and will. God teaches us daily and with the intention that we profit. He brings us insight and wisdom, the intelligence that helps us to prosper.

We may not know the way we need to go or be able to see into the future. But God is ready to lead us, to guide us forward into tomorrow. He knows the way. While we may think we know what we should do, God can lead us into what is truly right by His standards. He knows what is best for us, suits us, causes us to progress, and at the same time to feel safe, loved, home.
