awe-and-wonder

“I will offer You my grateful heart, for I am Your unique creation, filled with wonder and awe. You have approached even the smallest details with excellence; Your works are wonderful; I carry this knowledge deep within my soul.” (Psalms 139: 14, the Voice Translation)

God’s creation is awesome. And we are not only an expression of that wondrous Life, we are also given that spirit of wonder and reverence within us. This awareness of the magnificent, both large and small, is our true connection to Life and to Love.

As we recognize and cultivate this consciousness, as we are awake to the glory of God in us and around us, we gain light and life and peace and joy. When we see the reality of God’s universe—both the subtle and the grand details—all harmonizing as His design, we feel a part of that wholeness, and begin to know our own place in it.

Let’s give to God our grateful heart. Let’s rise up to realize and celebrate not only what is beautiful and good, but the very gift of wonder and awe itself. Let’s relish this profound response within us that opens up heaven to us right here on earth!

“So this is why we abandon everything morally impure and all forms of wicked conduct. Instead, with a sensitive spirit we absorb God’s Word, which has been implanted within our nature, for the Word of Life has power to continually deliver us.” (James 1: 21, the Passion Translation)

We can stop giving undue power and attention to our human vulnerabilities, flaws, and sensitivities. Instead, we can use that spirit within us, that is sensitive to, aware of, drawn toward, what is good and true and healing.

Let’s be alert to unkind ways of acting and thinking about others and even about ourselves. Let’s abandon the impure—those ideas and motives and behaviors that muddy up our thoughts and our lives. Let’s wake up to that wonderful clean slate ready for God’s pen to write upon. His Word tells us who we really are and what is truly possible for us. He reveals His design which is beautiful and harmonious.

This Word of Life is speaking within us. It is a more natural voice than the suggestions of the mortal mind that want to lead us into trouble, anger, fear, doubt, unkindness. God is always providing us with what is right and true, and we can let our humble and sensitive spirits be soft and ready to absorb all that He has to offer us. This is deliverance, joy, and peace!

“Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.” (Ephesians 6: 14-18, Message Bible)

If we can embrace these ideas, day by day, we can be helpful to our world and live a much more joyous experience as well.

It can be easy to talk about high-minded ideas, like peace and justice, but God’s qualities are more than words. They are ideals for us to actively claim and live to the best of our ability. We can awaken, through the prayer that is encouraged here, to Truth and its glorious cause, and to our natural part in this, our ability to achieve much good.

As we pray and keep our eyes open to light, we can bring this light to the lives of others. We can be alert to the need around us and uplift, encourage, and patiently help our brothers and sisters. We can pray hard and long—not obligatory statements of ritual, but a real and earnest receptivity to God and His purpose for us.

In this way, we not only get by, we thrive and also have an impact on the world, wherever we are, because we bear witness with our lives to Truth, to righteousness, to peace, to faith, and to salvation.

“…and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be death; there will no longer be sorrow and anguish, or crying, or pain; for the former order of things has passed away…Behold, I am making all things new.” (Revelation 21: 4-5, Amplified Bible)

Happy New Year! Let’s enter into this day with a feeling of renewal, expectation. Let’s be ready for life to bloom and blossom. Let’s recognize this moment as one in which we can begin to open ourselves up for healing, release, comfort, joy.

For today, as every day, God is expressing every one of His qualities with grace and glory. God’s eternal, timeless, Life demands a freshness, perpetuity, and progress. We can stand in this hour with awareness of the goodness in it. We can look ahead without fear—with hope, with openness to new perspectives. “Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.” (Isaiah 42: 9)

New Year’s Eve can feel like a held breath—an anticipation of a fresh start to our experience individually and collectively. We may feel fearful of what is to come as time passes, but we can find hope and expectation in this verse.

The past is gone. We can let it go—look back and bless our former days, perhaps, but be ready for what is to come. And that doesn’t mean bracing for trouble. It means preparing ourselves for God’s unfolding good for us. God will declare these new things, but He will also, as He says here, make sure that we are ready.

God’s new ideas, inspiration, guidance, development, comes with a timely awareness. God’s voice readies us for His good news for us. We can listen on this cusp of a new hour of life for the vital Truth of being.

We can recognize in the midnight hour the stirrings of a new dawn, with sprouts of life springing up and beautiful buds forming. We can breathe a sigh of grateful release to the eternal Life that is Love.

“Do not fear [anything], for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, be assured I will help you; I will certainly take hold of you with My righteous right hand [a hand of justice, of power, of victory, of salvation].” (Isaiah 41: 10, Amplified Bible)

With God we are comforted and empowered. With God, we are assured of safety and of victory.

And we are with God always, for He is ever-present. We can never be separate from the full measure of His goodness and grace. God tells us here that He is here. God, divine Love, declares that we can let go of all fear because of the very nature of Who He is.

God’s qualities are omnipotent. His Love is without opposition, without condition, and infinite. So, we are right now and always the recipient and reflection of this Love. Fully and unreservedly.

There is nothing tentative in this statement, nor does it leave room for exceptions. God’s justice and strength, His saving power, is certain. And it is certainly ours. His hand soothes, lifts fear, brings peace. At the same time, it uplifts, encourages, and leads us progressively on to joy and to satisfaction and to success.

“And the angel said unto [the shepherds], Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2: 10-11)

Hallelujah! The angels are announcing the birth of a savior! On this Christmas day, we can join the heavenly host and the shepherds in grateful praise that Christ has come, because we know what that means.

The angel’s words get at the heart of what the Christ has revealed to men and women. We are told that we need not fear, and that joy is ours to have—that all people can receive this glorious Truth. Today.

Christmas hushes the voices of doubt and darkness and shows us the true light, that divine goodness that is ever with men. We can awake this morning to the holy relationship that Jesus came to share and demonstrate. We can honor him and his story, by remembering what Jesus told us: We are children of God, worthy, blessed, and one family embraced by Father-Mother-Love.

Fear not. Listen for the good news. Let the sweet joy of Christmas come to you today and let its twinkling lights of holy promise go forward into tomorrow as well!

“Midnight foretells the dawn. Led by a solitary star amid the darkness, the Magi of old foretold the Messiahship of Truth.” (Science and Health, p. 95)

We can join the wise men who recognized in the night what the dawn would bring. We can commemorate that amazing occasion where the world was led to a humble place to embrace a powerful promise.

Let’s not fail to glimpse that star. We can find it in others, in experiences that inspire, in scriptural verses, in angel ideas that come to us just when we need them. We can find that star in our own hearts—a light within beckoning us to follow through, to trust that this saving radiance is to be appreciated deeply and accepted gratefully.

We have this light of Love in us. It encourages us forward not only to see that Christ-Truth and to accept the glorious message of freedom, but to freely share it as well. We can follow that star as it leads us out of personal darkness, to the reality of God’s presence, forgiveness, peace. And we can keep on following it, walking not only toward that Christ-idea, that Christmas glory, but with it.

Let’s enjoy the midnight hour, even the mystery of the unknowing, and wake with expectation of the goodness to come.

“The Lord is close to all whose hearts are crushed by pain, and he is always ready to restore the repentant one.” (Psalms 34: 18, the Passion Translation)

We have a tender Father-Mother always ready to comfort us. When we may feel the furthest from peace, this is when our God is close to us. We can rely on the gentle caress of divine Love to wipe away tears of grief and disappointment. We can lean into the arms of kindness and understanding from the One Who knows and loves us.

God is ready to restore us. He is able to make us new when we have lost our way. When we make mistakes, we aren’t abandoned by Him nor are we failures in the world. God sees us for who we truly are, accepts our repentance—our realization of errors and changed hearts—and opens the way for new opportunities, a fresh start.

God, perfect Life and Love, is here. You are not alone. You are not hopeless. You have solace, uplift, a steady ready hand to lift you up, to carry you forward, to pull you in for a holy and healing embrace.

“Now, may the Lord himself, the Lord of peace, pour into you his peace in every circumstance and in every possible way. The Lord’s tangible presence be with you all.” (II Thessalonians 3: 16, the Passion Translation)

Paul preached and taught widely and enthusiastically. He led people who were from different locations and having varied perspectives, to awake to the Christ-message of God’s goodness and healing power.

And Paul was also generous with his blessings. His prayers were beautiful blankets of sweet salvation cast upon his followers, leaving them with an awareness not only of the Word of God, but of the Spirit of Love which always accompanies His ideas.

We can receive this benediction today. We can eagerly and gratefully open ourselves up to receive true peace. We can acknowledge joyously that no matter what appears to be confronting us, or how far from certain we seem to be, God’s presence is with us, and it can be felt.

Paul knew that this tangible presence was with him and with all. He felt it, demonstrated it, was set free physically and mentally, by this awareness.

And Paul’s message begins with this word: Now. So, let us now feel that peace, straight from God, to our open hearts and our willing minds.
