The Hem of His Garment, painting by Wayne Pascall

“And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.” (Mark 6: 56)

Those in Jesus’ presence, yearning for and expecting healing, were made whole by touching the hem of his robe. The healing Christ revealed the true man and woman, the healthy and free idea of God.

There were no limits on how many were healed. Each who recognized in some degree the Truth Jesus was demonstrating found peace and comfort and freedom from their ailments.

Jesus may not be physically in our midst today, but the Christ-Truth is always at hand. All can approach that ideal, that Truth, and be open and ready to humbly receive all that it has to offer.

We don’t have to be fully acquainted with this Christ, know all that it is and means and does. We don’t have to be biblical scholars or have a long-time understanding and practice of prayer and healing. Our wholeness, our well-being, is not distant and difficult. It is the reality of life. And we only need to touch the hem—to meekly listen for and be ready to receive and believe God’s inspiration, His healing word to this moment, for us.

“God has said: ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ We, therefore, can confidently say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” (Hebrews 13: 5-6, J. B. Phillips New Testament)

You are not alone. You never will be or can be. God, divine goodness and Love, are forever with you. God’s faithfulness is without pause or exception. His Truth abides in you, is part of your very being. You will never be without His light, His Life, His answers, His comfort and care.

God is our helper, and He knows how to bring us just what we need. His gentle hand holds ours and His power is our invincible defense against whatever the world may try to throw at us. God is greater than the world. He is greater than the attacks of mortals and mortality. He is greater than time and physical sense.

We can be confident in our trust. We can release our dark fears to the light of God’s Love. We can expect victory over all that might try to harm us, for we have God with us—knowing us, cherishing us, guarding us, loving us, healing us.

“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” (II Corinthians 1: 3-4)

God’s comfort is present and boundless. His divine Love reaches us with a firm embrace and a sweet caress. Our Father-Mother is full of tender mercy for each of us, and He brings peace and consolation in times of trouble and fear.

God’s Love is expressed abundantly, and we can receive it with an open and willing heart. We can allow ourselves to release to His gentle goodness. We can settle into our Mother’s arms, and let ourselves breathe, trust, believe, regenerate.

And this healing Love is so plentiful and alive. As we feel it in us, calming us and bringing us hope, we are able to utilize this blessing to help others in need. Knowing the grace of God, we are grateful and ready to share this gift. We can naturally and effectively comfort one another with the measureless and healing Love of God that remains with us and in us always.

“Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.” (I Peter 3: 9, New Living Translation)

If we want to feel the blessings that God is ready to bestow on us, we have to give up the cursing. If evil is done to us or if we believe we are under attack, our best recourse is not angry retaliation. For then we have emulated the very behavior that we despise. We have allowed our own innocence to become tarnished by anger and blame.

It isn’t always easy to brush off another’s ugly words or actions. But we can defend ourselves with our consciousness of our own innocence and take the high road to healing. God has made us capable of blessing our enemies, of utilizing the loving hearts that He has given us, to be compassionate, patient, understanding. We can help ourselves and others by refusing to stoke the flames of argument. We can allow our natural peace and love to settle us and flow forth to others, even those who may not know as well how to be loving.

The blessing of God comes to us as we bless others. For as we love one another, we are loving the God Who made us all. We are honoring His qualities of goodness and this brings us a feeling of true well-being that retaliatory anger will never give us.

“For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence. In reality there is no other existence, since Life cannot be united to its unlikeness, mortality.” (Science and Health, p. 492)

Let’s get our facts straight. Let’s start from a premise that leads us to accurate conclusions.

Life is more than the confining, declining, mortal experience that we may feel is so certain and unavoidable and depressing. When we start with limits, these define our possibilities.

But this limited perspective is just that. It is a perspective, not the reality of being, the Truth that is ours to discover and to live. Spiritual existence is real and enduring, the Life that God has given us, and which is always unfolding progress, goodness, renewal, peace.

As we recognize this Life as our own, and begin from this standpoint, we can experience the fearlessness and freedom that makes life a joy. Starting and staying with a trust in the Life that God designed, we align with Truth and Love and our lives reflect what is right and real and good and unending—here, now, forever.

“Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.  And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].” (Philippians 4: 6-7)

Peace can be yours. The seeming turmoil of the world can’t take it away from you. Material reasoning will try to argue for anxiety, but our true peace transcends what appears to be true with what is true.

We can turn to God when we feel confronted by trials and uncertainty. We can truly pray, with grateful awareness of God’s loving presence, about everything that comes up in our lives. Nothing that causes us fear or worry is too small to take to God, to look to the heart of Love for that sweet peace that dissolves fear.

This peace is already in us to be awakened. Peace is a gift of God that the Christ-light reveals to each of us. It is that serene certainty that is deeper and wiser than human sense and opinions. It is that spiritual tranquility that Jesus so beautifully expressed because he knew that God was with him and that no pretense of danger, sickness, fear, was greater than the power of God’s Love to overcome it.

“Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.” (I Peter 5: 7, the Message Bible)

God’s tender and faithful care for us gives us freedom. We can let go of our fears and doubts, the need to be in personal control of all, and rely on God’s gentle goodness and His powerful defense.

Divine Love is forever watching over us, guarding us in our daily lives and leading us forward in God’s intention. God’s perfect care is not jarring; His direction can’t bring anxiety or uncertainty. God won’t let us be broken or lost. He is most careful with us and with our lives, for we express His very presence and goodness and Life.

Let’s do our best to release our days from the grip of ego and accept and enjoy a life free of cares and full of purpose. Living in awareness of God, in the expression and pursuit of good, we can let go and simply live, moment by moment, with a childlike abandon and trust—grateful, confident, carefree.

“Cast your burden on the Lord [releasing the weight of it] and He will sustain you; He will never allow the [consistently] righteous to be moved (made to slip, fall, or fail).” (Psalms 55: 22, Amplified Bible Classic Edition)

Release the weight of your burdens, your fears. Letting go of your cares is not dropping the ball, losing control of life. It is entering into the realm of peace while God sustains you. It is allowing the Almighty to do what He can easily do, letting His wisdom and Love set us free and move us forward.

We can relax our shoulders and breathe. We can give up the mortal ego—the self that is full of pride and doubt and judgment—and be receptive of help. We can remember that we aren’t alone and anxious, uncertain and weak. We are naturally at one with God, the powerful divine presence that knows what we need and is able to provide it.

We can stay true to what is right and good. We can do our best to keep our motives pure and loving. This aligns us with God, and He upholds us through any challenges, redirects us when we turn the wrong way. God is ready and able to carry your burden and you. Humbly and gratefully let Him lighten your load and enlighten your life.

“For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.” (I John 5: 4, New Living Translation)

We are not victims of the world and its apparent evils. We don’t have to agree to feelings of weakness or fear. We have an inherent ability to defeat the devilish elements and to bring out a better day for ourselves and for the world as well.

Our victory comes through awareness and acceptance of who we are. We are children of God, born of His goodness, protected by His might, and recipient of His promises. We are at one with God, with the Almighty Who is all good, all the time, in every place. We can diminish the evils in our thinking and make room for this Truth. We can watch error dissolve through our humble faith in the power of God, of good.

This verse does not leave anyone out nor require that we have a mighty army to conquer the challenger to peace. Every child of God is a death knell to evil. Being who we are, the very expression of God’s Life and Truth and Love, we can feel confident that our individual flames can dissolve any darkness where we are, bringing light to our lives and to our greater world.

“When You send out Your breath, life is created, and the face of the earth is made beautiful and is renewed. May the glorious presence of the Eternal linger among us forever. And may He rejoice in the greatness of His own works.” (Psalms 104: 30-31, the Voice Translation)

The earth is God’s own masterpiece. With His Spirit, He formed all things and made them to be like Him—beautiful, perfect, complete. And because He is Life without beginning or end, God’s ideas are always fresh and new.

By His breath—His inspiration and expression of Life—His true creation is revealed, which includes each one of us. We can join in this psalm of praise that our glorious earth and all things in it have been made spiritually, created to harmonize, to perpetuate God’s glory, His eternal existence.

Let’s breathe in and feel the very presence of the Eternal. Let’s linger in God’s Love, His purpose to save and bring joy and peace. Let’s do our best to cherish one another, to appreciate the good in the world, and to bring out more of it. Let’s make God glad in us, continually pleased with the ideas that He has made.
