Question.–What is man? Answer.–Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements.” (Science and Health, page 475)

The physical appearances, the organs and functions that seem to keep us alive and subsequently fail and condemn us to death, have nothing to do with man. They are not included in the divine definition, the Word of God that is fixed and incontestable Truth. We are not built of matter and its anatomy. That description cannot possibly describe God’s idea.

Spirit created man, and is his very Life. Spirit is not confined in a body or limited by a collection of items supposed to give it mobility, agility, freedom, growth, harmony, peace. Spirit includes and embraces every right quality, unconfined, forever available, expressing without limit and without assistance from matter, that mere belief in limitation.

So what is man? Right where the mortal sense would limit man to a personal body and personal characteristics, age, accident, genetics, material conceptions of what life should be and what it cannot be, right there is the grand and noble man of God’s own creating and anointing. Right there, right here, is the ideal compound idea, made up of every right concept, expressed in man, but originating in the infinite Mind of God. The heart, blood, lungs, brain are not life. God is Life! Is He material? Is He in an organ to be found or lost? No!

We are that man that is composed of God’s own substance, that which cannot fail and has not, which cannot be impaired and has not, which cannot be given a power to govern life, and has not. Let’s not look for a definition of our being or a statement of our condition from such an unreliable source as matter, when God is announcing our freedom clearly and consistently right here, right now!

“…he that believeth shall not make haste.” (Isaiah 28: 16)

We are true believers. We know that our God is good, is Love, is Truth, is omnipotent. We know that He is All-in-all. So we can relax and rely. We can recognize that the activity of God’s wisdom and efficiency will not leave us wanting. We don’t need to hurry forth in panic, to think that our human doing must head things off or make things happen.

God is doing all and doing it well. His time is neither rushed nor limited. Each moment of being is simply ready rightness, always and already active, never late and never too early, never anticipating trouble yet always alert. Let’s enjoy the wonderful opportunity to pause and be grateful for God’s reliability. Everything is under control. We have adequate time and stillness to listen to and hear Him, to love our lives and those in it, to remember God, good, Life, and to forget our worries.

Our trust in God gives us the luxury of lingering in our joy, without a sense that we will lose time or anything else that is right. He is worthy of that trust just as we are worthy of His care. Our abiding is in Him. He maintains and sustains us always and thoroughly.  Our honoring of that fact recognizes it, gives us the conscious awareness of where we are—that heaven of His presence that is orderly, controlled, regulated, right, and still so very natural and peaceful and free.

“Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit:” (Ezekiel 18: 31)

Let’s put that all behind us! Let’s step into our new day fresh and free, with a new focus and a renewed devotion. Any wrong thinking or acting of yesterday or five minutes ago, needn’t burden this hour or leave us too tarnished to shine. Each moment we have a new opportunity to do a better thing, live a better way, have a higher hope, and be newly baptized for our life ahead!

Our transgressions–human mistakes and ignorance–are not permanent attachments. They are not a perpetual cross to bear, an obstruction in our path, or some roster of offenses in God’s “big book.” Every moment we are given the occasion for renewed understanding, renewed consecration to good, and to that call to know ourselves as God has always known us—powerful in our innocence, and worthy of His faithful and unlapsing Love,

Our new heart and new spirit are not made of something foreign to us, but is really only our true being reclaimed and accepted. Jesus certainly proved the cleansing Spirit of God’s Truth when he told those of sinful behavior (who seemed to be going against their best nature) to “go and sin no more.” It was that simple. Cast it away. Begin anew. The childish ignorance of yesterday is blessed by the childlike trust of today, and with our new heart and our new spirit, we sing a new song—gratitude, praise, and love!

“Divine Science alone can compass the heights and depths of being and reveal the infinite.” (Science and Health, page 292)

The light of Truth as revealed by the Christ is the only true gauge of the extent of good that is present and active. We will not come to understand it through scholarly attainment or through technical advancement, while these may be worthy and helpful to human development and growth.

The breadth and depth of reality can’t be compassed (encircled, grasped, fully traversed) by material sense or material science. Only the divine can fully comprehend and embrace the divine. Only the spiritual sense can perceive the boundless infinite. That which is material is by definition limited, confinable, confined. Material observation and analysis may glimpse the eternal, but it will never come to a solid conclusion about it.

But this does not leave us ignorant! It only wakens us to trust those acute spiritual senses that we naturally have to give us peace and vision. We are able to recognize that the Christ-Mind can know the glory of God’s immortal Life, and that Christian Science is revealing it to human thought every hour. We are blessed in that we recognize that the infinite ideal is that which is always true and present. And so we also know that the limited material concept is unreal, and therefore it cannot bind us or our thought.

The Christ has let us in on the secret of the universe that can’t be uncovered by astronomy, computers or human intelligence. Physics can’t enumerate or demonstrate infinite Love. But, the spiritual secret is ours to claim openly, and by claiming it, to see the influence of the boundless spiritual on what appears as our earth, our bodies, our lives. No limits!

“The Lord knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.” (Psalms 37: 18-19)

God knows our days, our permanency, our preservation. He consciously sustains our uprightness—keeps us right, perfect, enduring, uplifted, and free. For, we are His beloved, the very ideas in His perfect Mind. We are the thoughts that give Him joy, that express His intention, that glorify Him in every place.

He maintains our inheritance, that heritage that belongs to the sons and daughters of God. It does not disappear in times that seem to challenge us humanly. It is not wrested away from us because of some material circumstance or human decision or turn of events or personal ignorance or misunderstanding. Our days are known of God, and they are perpetual.

Even if we seem to be agonizing in a time of uncertainty, fear, doubt, shame, confusion, He is ever with us, holding us up, asserting our true spotless and magnificent and necessary selfhood. We are always the apple of His eye, the child of His heart, the one whom He will always love and keep safe. He is always pleased.

And when the world about us would fail to feed us, inspire us, supply us, He is ever-present presentness. He is right here and His Love satisfies. It knows no limits, has no conditions, and is undisturbed by material suggestions of poverty of living or of thinking. He simply is all there is to everything, and He is always expressing His flawless Life through His artistry—you and me!

Daily Inspiration, October 21st

“For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.” (Romans 14: 2-3)

We can each trust our individual leadings, and leave others to theirs. We can pray for the world’s understanding, freedom from fear, and release from unnecessary conditions on their lives. But, we can do it all without judgment, without self-righteousness, and without derision of another’s choices.

God loves each of us unconditionally. God is attending to each of us, guiding us to a unique and right awareness of Him, of good, and protecting us even when we may not be aware of His Word and His arms around us. One may choose wisely in his lifestyle or he may seem to choose contrary to what we might believe to be the right. But we must not judge another. We do not know their hearts and their angels—what guides them and why.

This does not mean we leave people to dangerous or destructive behavior. It does not mean we ignore those who may need some help and instruction, healing and guidance. But, let us be careful that we are listening to God, Love, in what we do. Love respects, listens, honors, is not stubborn or degrading. It does not mock or presume or push.

We can trust each one to his own inspiration—whether it be what he eats or wears or what music he listens to or what choices he makes for healthcare. We are equal to God, and equally loved by Him. We can consciously pray to know and trust and rest in the fact that none are left without the Truth, for that Truth is in our hearts. We can always feel it, hear it, follow it, individually—uniquely, rightly, safely–and always still in harmony with all!

“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.” (Revelation 22: 3-4)

The revelation is reality. The revealing of a heavenly experience is not a distant hope, aspiration, or pipe dream, but the present situation, our own abiding place forever. We needn’t wait for our innocence to be announced by matter and the senses. God has already shown us that there is no curse, no shame, no blame, no necessity for limitation, suffering, or fear. There cannot be in His Love, which is All in all.

We have the Christ-message of Truth, revealing that we are in God’s presence always, beholding His face, His approving Love, His protection, His affection, His unfailing direction. We are not cursed to plod through material life on a course toward material death. We belong to God. His name is ours, His nature is ours to know and express. We are the servants to the Christ-ideal, in that we are faithful expressions of that which is true. We are the very image of God, obedient to Him in purpose, action, and intention.

The Christ-revelation lifts the veil on a false sense of ourselves–cursed and in trouble and unworthy–and we can see the face of God, of goodness, of our place in the kingdom of heaven, life unlimited and harmonious. The Christ-Truth has shown us who we are, and we should never forget it or lose sight of it. We are made in God’s image, as His children, and we can never depart from that fact of our own being, nor can it be hidden anymore. We are not cursed, but infinitely blessed, here and now and always!

“Trials teach mortals not to lean on a material staff,–a broken reed, which pierces the heart. We do not half remember this in the sunshine of joy and prosperity.” (Science and Health, page 66)

Without our trials, our challenges, our disappointments, would we be as aware of what is real, true, and enduring? Would we know what life is truly founded on and grounded in? Those trying times should be cherished, not because we enjoy suffering or self-pity, or because God has planned and sent the trouble, but because they necessarily lead us to Love, true Love. We can be grateful for these hard lessons and losses and conscious of their instruction, of the revelations of Truth that must show forth when matter and material sense and circumstance seems to fail us.

The material staff that may be our first friend and support can’t hold us up, sustain us, or bring us true satisfaction, peace, and enduring joy. Material reliances—people, money, jobs, possessions, personal achievement—are variable, weak, mutable, finite, and subjective. What feels right and perfect one day may be all wrong and even seem to betray us the next day.

But we are never lost or left without our good, our wholeness, our success, our life, our love, our purpose. We only come to know more that the divine Spirit, the Truth of Life, God and His conscious ever-presence, will always be with us, has always been with us, and will always be right and satisfying. Our Father-Mother-Life loves and cares and sustains us in pain and weakness, as well as in joy and prosperity. He always maintains the truth of our being, and keeps us perfect and intact because of who we are to Him—His own adored reflection, necessary expression, and His best-loved child!

“There is more Science in the perpetual exercise of the Mind-faculties than in their loss. Lost they cannot be, while Mind remains. The apprehension of this gave sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf centuries ago, and it will repeat the wonder.” (Science and Health, page 487)

The perpetual permanency of the faculties of Mind is scientific. The perfect functioning and use of all the abilities and capabilities of divine Mind is a law of being, all being, and therefore, our being. This is an operating Principle, unchallenged by mortal sense, and forever proving itself as our whole and harmonious lives.

Mind is forever intact and complete. It is All and in all. It contains and expresses all comprehension and every idea. Its eternal integrity is our reliance, our natural and necessary and ageless and immutable expressiveness. We simply can’t lose the faculties of Mind, and they are always available to us. God keeps them and nothing in Him is ever lost nor can it be lost sight of.

Let’s continue to exercise the functions of being that we do always have, rather than working at regaining or worrying about losing that which could never be lost. Sight, hearing, speech, memory, mobility, nobility, grace, perception, clarity, are absolutely our right and our present state of being and living. This “wonder” is ours to realize with our forever perfect and true spiritual senses! Let’s recognize the presence of divine Mind and use these whole and holy faculties to make known to all the glory of God, our faithful Life, Truth, and Love.

“…’hid with Christ in God,’–with Truth in divine Love, where human sense hath not seen man.” (Science and Health, page 324)

Our lives are hidden, secret from the senses and matter and material circumstances. We remain untouchable and untouched because we are “hid with Christ in God.” We are God’s perfect idea and ideal, held in Mind, embraced there, as the very sons and daughters of His Love. We are what the Christ expressed, that perfect man who is always safe and right, because he is always at one with God, Principle, Truth.

Human sense can’t view this man that we are. Human arguments, opinions, and the so-called laws of mortal belief can’t make a mark on this image in divine Mind. The perfect idea that we are remains perfect, for Mind is eternally infinite, the only Creator, and we are His dearly beloved, His necessary expression, His crystal-clear reflection.

This secret place–the same to which David referred in the 91st Psalm–is protected by affection. It is the heavenly abode that keeps us always intact, always constituted of and surrounded by perfect Love. It is this Love that keeps us whole, pure, innocent, and forever free. It is through the knowledge of this Love that even the human senses begin to glimpse the divine hiding place, and to recognize the perfect man ready to be claimed and rejoiced over and lived right out in the open, yet still safe, sound, satisfied!
