Daily Inspiration, February 9th

“Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can ‘run, and not be weary;…walk, and not faint,’ who gain good rapidly and hold their position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement.” (Science and Health, page 254)

Our consistency and growth in good does not follow some formula or timeline of perfect human steps and behavior. We shouldn’t be judging our spiritual understanding or our success in life based on what others may appear to be doing or saying. Our demonstration of the active presence of God is uniquely ours, and that is what makes it so right and honest and powerful.

Our progress is not based on speed. In fact, we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves—ahead of the practical and right instruction that brings us true and lasting light. We are meant to appreciate the journey and enjoy thoroughly each of its guideposts and inspirations, the angels of each new day and each new phase of discovery.

Don’t be discouraged. At times, you may be called to really go, go, go on your walk in Truth. You may feel led to climb quickly and with joy to the top, singing all the way. At other times, you may need to slow down, smell the roses, ponder their beauty, wonder about their thorns, and get closer to God in each quiet moment. This slow walk isn’t ignorance or laziness, if it is impelled by the consistency of a right desire to know God better, and ourselves as His beloved children and heirs of His precious promises.

Enjoy your customized instruction. It is preciously yours and so it is just right!

Daily Inspiration, February 7th

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4: 31-32, New International Version)

We were not made to be full of hate and anger. God did not make us to fight with one another and be unkind. Our loving Father-Mother gave us the Christ—a message of Love and oneness and goodness—because this Truth will set us free.

Answer gratefully this call to compassion and forgiveness. It is the most healthy and natural way to be. We not only honor God when we express His love in our lives, we also settle into our own well-being. God formed us out of His Love and this Love doesn’t hold on to bitterness or thrive on battle and argument. We are most at peace and true to ourselves when we yield to the Lover within us.

Of course, it isn’t always easy to see past others’ misdeeds or accusations. But to forgive is not merely some nice ideal. It is our own salvation, prepared for us. And this compassion, this desire to forgive ignorance (for evil and hate is always truly ignorance, isn’t it?), comes from within our own hearts. It is the Christ-light, showing us who we truly are—the sons and daughters of infinite Love, living in accord with our true nature, making peace, and feeling peaceful ourselves.

Daily Inspiration, February 2nd

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11: 25, New International Version)

Look to your own abundance. You have the capacity for genuine and joyous generosity. Your gifts are overflowing. You have God’s qualities resonating within you, always at the ready to be expressed. These are Love’s own attributes, and you have been given them freely, naturally, and permanently.

Draw on your riches and give with enthusiasm! Use that Love that God has given you to comfort, ease, and uplift others. Refresh the world with your own natural radiance and your sincere desire to be a light wherever darkness appears, and a cleansing, renewing spirit to whatever seems burdened and troubled.

This generosity won’t deplete you nor will it leave you without the tender mercy and compassionate care you may need yourself. Be willing to give and willing to receive. Be generous with your trust that others can help and refresh you as well.

And most of all, be generous with your gratitude for God Who is the Source of all the Life and Love there is—the boundless and active and refreshing Spirit that preserves, protects, and renews one and all.

Daily Inspiration, January 31st

“Spirit, God, gathers unformed thoughts into their proper channels, and unfolds these thoughts, even as He opens the petals of a holy purpose in order that the purpose may appear.” (Science and Health, page 506)

Your goals, your development, your growth, your understanding are all very beautifully governed by the divine Gardener. The multitude of things we want to know or hope to do are not confused or overwhelming or simply elusive. They are controlled very precisely by God, who brings each idea to fruition at just the right time.

God knows His own ideas. He has the blooming garden of our days and of our lives all designed in its full splendor. Each petal of His purpose for us will reveal itself according to what the season requires and what will be most pleasing to us and to others.

We don’t need to know the whole picture. We don’t need to see everything done or get out ahead of our inspired ideas. What we do need to do is trust the seeds God has planted, love their promise, and tend to them with our patient receptivity. Things may feel too big to attain or our vision of things unclear, but we will see the buds form at just the right time, and each aspect will come into view for us at a pace that is comfortable, natural, and still spectacular!

Spirit, God, brings out the best in us and in our lives. Rest in this fact and trust your Father-Mother to show you what you need to know, when you need to know it.  Enjoy the discovery, one flowering, aromatic idea at a time.

“Divine Love is infinite. Therefore all that really exists is in and of God, and manifests His love.” (Science and Health, page 340)

God’s Love is boundless. It proceeds from an infinite Source and continues to flow without interruption or exception. God’s Love is not stalled out by distance, circumstance, ignorance, material obstacles. Time doesn’t influence the perfection and presence and power of this Love.

Why? Because Love is God and God is omnipotent and omnipresent. Love constitutes reality and everything was made to express this Love. Divine Love, being God, fills all space and there is no room or reason for anything else. This Love is self-sustaining harmony; it is the breath of all Life; it is the substance of all that God created and all that exists; it is the holy purpose that endures and cannot be damaged or destroyed.

Let’s look at ourselves, others, and our lives with genuine eyes—those that see and recognize Love and nothing less. For Love is real and powerful. Anything that isn’t Love doesn’t have any real capacity. It only seems to have what our fear or belief might give it. Stay on the side of power. Divine Love is all around and in you. See it. Use it. Love it back, with gratitude and great expectations!

“The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.” (Proverbs 28: 1)

Standing with righteousness, as the upright and noble creation of God, we can easily be bold. Through this conscious connection with the divine reality of being—our own natural goodness and kindness and decency—we can be confident in all that we do.

This is not arrogance or human bravado. It is that certainty of the lion, his innate recognition of power and dominion, because of who he is. We can have this same assured state of being as we act in accord with our true nature. Our goodness gives us power that is not pretense, but simply, trust.

On the other hand, those who may agree to evil suggestions or behave at odds with their own higher selfhood, may appear fierce, but they have no power. They don’t have the strength of righteousness to stand on, and so they may run away in times of trouble and even when they are not threatened. The awareness of guilt or wicked intentions can bring out that unnatural paranoia.

But the rock of righteousness is in each one of us. We have the ability to recognize this fact and to confidently, boldly, walk forth and face life without fear. For we know who we are—the very expression of Almighty goodness, Life, and Love.

“Then the Lord said to him, ‘Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground [worthy of reverence and respect].’” (Acts 7: 33, Amplified Bible)

How wonderful it is to be made aware that right where we are, is holy ground! Just as we are reminded here with God’s words to Moses, this awesome announcement is coming to us today to show us just what a hallowed place we are in.

The recognition of the present and its power for us, is saving and healing. We can mentally remove our sandals—reverence this moment and all it contains for us. For this very moment has God in it, good in it, Love in it, and resonates with opportunity. The ground, this trustworthy foundation of Truth on which you stand, is holy because it is the place where God put us and where He holds us safe and ready for grace.

We can respect this place where we are. We can stop judging and analyzing ourselves and our lives, looking back with regret and forward with fear, and simply stand in grateful awe of this moment. It is full of promise and it is also full of one very special thing—YOU!

You bring a glory to this place with your very presence. Cherish your sweet power and the blessing you bring to Life by being you—God’s own image and beloved!

Daily Inspiration, January 17th

“The wisdom that comes from God is first utterly pure, then peace-loving, gentle, approachable, full of tolerant thoughts and kindly actions, with no breath of favouritism or hint of hypocrisy. And the wise are peace-makers who go on quietly sowing for a harvest of righteousness—in other people and in themselves.” (James 3: 17-18, J.B. Phillips New Testament)

God’s wisdom includes all that is peaceful and also powerful. His intelligent guidance is kind and good, full of Love and the certainty of Truth. There is nothing in God’s Mind that is ignorant, partial, unclear, confused, or unbalanced. God is perfect Love, divine affection, and incapable of mistake. This Love is not human love to be biased and jealous and fearful.

God’s wisdom is absolutely pure and easy and natural. We can trust it and turn to this Mind to guide us toward what is right for us and for all. Peace is the desired end, and starting with God, it is where we can also gratefully begin.

To be wise is to rely on God to control and care for all. It is to dwell in that natural and necessary peace of mind that is not only pleasant, but powerful in its serene resolve, persistent in Love, and in the pure effectiveness that comes of sincerity. When we trust God’s wisdom, we are led to appreciate what He has given us and to continue cultivating peace for ourselves and for our world as well.

The Intimate Ultimate: Self-discovery, art and the power of conscious awe

creative

Births, graduations, falling in love, marriage, new jobs and promotions. These constitute a list of memorable occasions in the course of a life. They leave an impression on us; they are landmarks along our journey and climactic chapters in our story.

But there are other moments that tell our narrative—the engrossing tale of our spiritual awareness, inner life, and really, who we are and what matters to us. I am discovering that these small but profound moments, these luscious experiences, deserve more serious reflection. After defining and analyzing things according to the outer picture of human experience for a damn long time, I’m realizing that I’ve neglected to acknowledge, celebrate, and honor the dots that connect beneath the surface.

I’m talking about those times where the divine and the human met inside of me, and sometimes to my own surprise, moved me deeply and revealed something more profoundly me than what parades as a life in my daily walk.

Here are a couple of examples, dating back a number of years but still strong in memory:

  • As a high school student, we took a field trip to the theater in Washington, DC, and saw Othello, with James Earl Jones as the Moor and Christopher Plummer as Iago. We sat in nosebleed seats. I could barely see the actors. And I left in a state of absolute awe. Shakespeare came alive to me—its brilliance almost dizzying me with poetic words (something I would come to realize is a weakness of mine)—and the sheer brilliance of the performances took my breath away. I blocked out most of my high school experiences, but that one still stands strong in memory and with gratitude.
  • When I lived in a small town in Texas starting up my career fresh out of college as a radio news professional (they call it “paying your dues”), there was so little to do or see that I kept a pretty quiet life of pre-dawn rising to write copy and spar playfully with the DJ, going to deadly dull city council meetings to “get the scoop” and a soundbite, and going to bed early. The town was sweet, but not a hotbed of artistic activity. So, when I went to hear the local symphony to do a little arts review for the radio station, my expectations were, to be honest, tepid. Until I heard them play. I don’t know if it was the group itself—they were surprisingly tight and talented—or just the fact I hadn’t heard many classical concerts live at that point in my life, but I was moved to the core. Sitting by myself, in mediocre seats this time, I couldn’t stop tearing up. What was this? What was going on? These old classical pieces were just thrilling. I felt some strange sensation of being at one with something peaceful and yet stirring. I hated that it ended.

Many performances since then have awakened this spirit inside of me to feel somehow connected to the beyond, in fact, to everything, because the art made contact with my soul. Yes, the experiences were sensory. But, the impact was more than that. It was spiritual, something within me that felt universal as well. I call it the Intimate Ultimate—a feeling both of profound awe and an inner and personal recognition.

Visual arts have slayed my mortality and given me glimpses of the immortal as well. In fact, this blog got its legs because I had a reminder of this theme and its importance in my life as I stood in front of a Monet painting and wept big tears very recently. Monet’s manipulation of the paint to produce light was enough to melt me, but my personal connection to a place and time in my childhood through the images and colors, had me a puddle. I didn’t even know I was crying till I felt the tears. The passive peace was active upon me. There was some inner soul-response that was more than memory. It was an acquaintance with self—a light on the inner me and another link tying together the true experience of my life.

The poetry of Rilke; the artistry and depth of Alvin Ailey’s dance; Michelangelo’s Pieta seen in person (OMG!); these are the moments of my life that really matter to me and that should be allowed to matter. They are why I am a poet and a writer myself and why I sing. But, I think they are more than that. These are not fleeting times randomly scattered through a lifetime. They are glimpses into the beauty, as well as the pathos, that is our individual life. Without these things, and them pondered, I don’t think I would be nearly as aware of what and who I am, or of the many colors of Life and Love that don’t present themselves merely through personal achievements or even personal relationships. They are the unique union we all have to something tangible, yet intangible—seen and felt through the senses, but connected to a deep place within that is ours alone. This is where our most authentic selves reside—the true soul of us on a journey that transcends the physical and yet never takes us away from home.

I long for new precious moments such as these, and I love to remind myself of those that have gone by. They make me feel alive. They leave me in awe. They humble and empower me at the same time.

As D.H. Lawrence puts it:

“Oh, for the wonder that bubbles into my soul.”

Daily Inspiration, January 12th

“Our God says, ‘Calm down, and learn that I am God!’” (Psalms 46: 10, Contemporary English Version)

Listen to God. He knows what is right and healing. Take this directive to heart without delay. It is not merely a nice request to chill out. It is God’s own voice telling us how to feel right, happy, and at peace. It is His demand for us to know Him.

Because knowing God means knowing what is true. It means fearless freedom. It means light to the darkness; wholeness instead of brokenness, lack, and loss; love rather than hate, resentment, anger; wisdom and clarity replacing doubts and ignorance and confusion.

Calm down. Consciously still yourself. This stillness is action. It is standing in receptivity and letting Truth dawn on your thought. Fretting and analyzing as well as rushing about pressured about everything, doesn’t allow us to hear and see reality. The blur of the world’s suggestions and mortal thoughts and opinions obscure the very thing that will bring us certainty and peace.

And that is knowing that God is God. It is a recognition that God is Truth to this moment. It is an awareness that He is Love to this moment, Life to this moment, and the very Soul of this moment. This calmness is not inaction. It is yielding. It is letting the sun come up, basking in its warmth and freshness, and receiving and cherishing the light it brings to our lives and to the lives of others as well.
