“My friends, be glad, even if you have a lot of trouble. You know that you learn to endure by having your faith tested.” (James 1: 2-3, Contemporary English Version)

This may seem like a difficult thing to do. How can we really be glad when we are struggling with problems? It feels difficult to have any sense of gratitude or faith in times like this.

But this message isn’t telling us to put on a false happy face or to be a martyr. It is reminding us that when we are tested, when things come to us that humble us, we gain so much. Not only are we strengthened by our endurance, we also grow in understanding and gain a greater perspective going forward. We learn to rely less on ourselves, and more on the divine might that is truly powerful, right, healing.

And our doubts and questioning in these trying times should not be viewed as a loss of faith. They are a refining of it. We can take these challenges as opportunities to seek answers, to go deeper, listen for truth, and gain the enlightenment that not only helps us heal but helps us to help others as well. For once we have been there, we can bring genuine compassion, understanding, and wisdom to others that is truly assuring and healing.

“The heart of the wise will easily accept instruction. But those who do all the talking are too busy to listen and learn. They’ll just keep stumbling ahead into the mess they created.” (Proverbs 10: 8, the Passion Translation)

Listening is wisdom. It may seem that we need to prove our intelligence, our convictions, by our words. We may get in the habit of talking in order either to call attention to ourselves or even to cover for our insecurities.

But let’s discover that true wisdom in our hearts and be sure that we listen enough to learn, and to love. If we want to grow in understanding and in grace, to find resolution and advancement and success, we would do best to heed instruction, to be open to new ideas and answers. Being a know-it-all, means we are stuck in the ego’s answers. Humbly listening—especially to God’s guidance—brings us the answers that are truly right and progressive, and which cause us both to thrive individually and to harmonize with others.

We can learn the sweet satisfaction of quietness, of listening with our hearts for God’s lovely and loving voice. We can remember that learning is growth, and growth is life. We can yearn to hear what others have to say, while also sharing our own goodness and inspiration with humility and wisdom.

“Listen! He makes his voice heard, his powerful voice. Acknowledge the power of God.” (Psalms 68: 33-34, God’s Word Translation)

God’s voice is powerful, and we can hear it when we listen. This listening is a state of openness and readiness. It shuts out the voices of mortals, of one’s own perceptions and fears, and is receptive for the good news.

God’s voice is the law making itself known. His Word is His action. What He says, He does, for He is Truth, and He is All. We can relish the opportunity to listen, for hearing God’s voice is hearing and feeling inspiration, uplift, health, beauty, harmony, and love.

And along with hearing, must come the acknowledging. To acknowledge is to admit that something is real and true, to recognize the authority and validity of it, and to show or express appreciation for it. We can’t simply hear the good news from God and then just leave it as some flash of momentary light. It must be affirmed as truth, fact. And our conscious gratitude and praise surely helps us more fully feel the reality of this truth.

We can listen, hear God’s voice, and experience the active, saving power of God, right here, right now.

“Are there some wise and understanding men among you? Then your lives will be an example of the humility that is born of true wisdom.” (James 3: 13, JB Phillips New Testament)

The mark of true wisdom is humility. If we gain real understanding, that spiritual discernment and growth that goes beyond merely accumulating information, we can make a positive impact.

Humility is often something that develops through various struggles, where the ego must yield to its own mistaken beliefs about itself and about life. This humility isn’t about feeling like nothing, like we are worthless. It is the treasure of recognizing that our lives are so much better, so much more right and satisfying and expansive, when we let go of our limited personal control, our limited perception of what is and what should be.

The humble man or woman is a great example to others. They don’t seek attention, but they naturally gain respect and appreciation, because their lives are radiant with God, with the goodness that is higher than intellectualism and grandiose actions seeking applause. This humility is a sincere trust in a higher power, in goodness and love. It is a true wisdom that brings blessings, opportunities, contentment, and joy.

“Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?” (Malachi 2: 10)

This question and its implicit answer can really wake us up in times of disagreement and challenge. We can look at others and ourselves in this more honest way. We can stop seeing individuals or nations or cultures as “other” and begin to see that we are all family.

For we have one creator, God, and He is the Father and Mother of everyone. No one is made by some other, lesser creator, and no one is less loved or special to God. God has formed each one of us out of His own brilliant qualities, designed us to radiate His goodness and love. We express Him in diverse ways, but we are all connected. We are all brothers and sisters.

This divine relationship is one that we can keep before our thought. We all have one Father, and that Father is Love itself. We are truly made of Love, and this is our common ground, our mutual quality and purpose. As we feel and express this Love, we align ourselves with who we truly are, who God made us to be, and this brings peace, respect, healing, harmony, and a feeling of true family with all mankind.

“Let us be thankful, then, because we receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Let us be grateful and worship God in a way that will please him, with reverence and awe;” (Hebrews 12: 28, Good News Translation)

Let’s start and end with gratitude. Let’s be aware that while the world around us may feel unsteady, we are really grounded on something so much stronger: God’s unshakeable realm, the Truth of being.

This kingdom is not something we must wait for. It is with us now, a living consciousness of goodness, peace, love. We feel and enjoy this beautiful kingdom in our hearts and in our lives as we awaken to God, to a loving power that is greater than our egos and more powerful than evil and limitation.

Each day we can begin to live in this kingdom as we think and behave more in accord with God, with good. As we let go of our own sense of control, our fears, our fixation on others and what they are or are not doing, we feel freer and more generous. Our conscious reverence opens us up to the gifts we have and to those around us. This inspires us and makes us less likely to take things for granted and more likely to be genuinely grateful and loving and happy as well.

“Discover creative ways to encourage others and to motivate them toward acts of compassion, doing beautiful works as expressions of love.” (Hebrews 10: 24, the Passion Translation)

We can use our creativity as a means of inspiring others. We can find fresh and genuine ways to bring out the best in those around us, naturally encouraging them to meaningful acts of love and goodness.

There’s no one set way to be a spiritual leader, to be one who wants to make a positive difference in the world. As we look to our own hearts and listen for guidance, we are led to new opportunities to buoy one another. We can choose to motivate individuals to be kind and compassionate not simply by telling them to do this. We can discover our own gifts, touching the spirits of others in ways that make them truly want to do good, because they feel full and uplifted themselves.

Artistic expression, humor, simply listening and responding from our hearts, are just some ways that we can reach and stimulate others to positive thoughts and actions. As we do our own beautiful works as expressions of love, others can’t help but discover their own gifts and want to share them in ways that are unselfish, kind, and healing.

“I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close.” (Revelation 3: 8, New Living Translation)

The door is open. This door is the way of Life. It is that awareness of God and of our oneness with Him, the Christ-message. This is the threshold to healing, progress, peace, joy.

We may think that the doorway to satisfaction and success can be closed by people, circumstances, or by our own actions or choice. But no one really can shut what God has opened, the inspiration that leads to the understanding of our heavenly harmony, here and now.

God knows the things we do, as this verse says. He sees the heart and soul of us that He created. He knows the good that we achieve and our potential. We may not always feel confident that we are acting rightly, but as we yearn to be better, to live with more love, to be humble and receptive, God continues to guide us forward.

No one can stop us from experiencing that birthright of freedom that God reveals to us. Let’s willingly and eagerly go through that open door into an expanded sense of life, and take with us gratitude, generosity, and love.

“I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s my parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught.” (John 14: 27, the Message Bible)

Jesus left his disciples with a blessing. He assured them that his parting would not be a loss of anything good and saving. They would be whole and peaceful.

Jesus knew that it was the Christ, that message of God’s Oneness and Love, that had changed those individuals. He knew that this active ideal, this living presence, would never leave them. Or any of us.

God’s Love and Life, expressed so beautifully through His son, Jesus, is a Truth that is not found or lost in a physical personality. When we rely on people as our salvation, as our answer to well-being, their loss can feel like abandonment, like we are needy and alone. But Jesus was telling us that we are always whole. We can’t lose the presence of God’s Love, and it is this very Love that we see reflected in those individuals we hold dear.

God’s Love abides and endures. The Christ-Truth that tells us of our own relationship to God as His sons and daughters, is always here and powerful. Don’t be upset. You are never left without God’s protection and affection. Jesus’ glorious promise is now at hand for you and for all.

“The Lord will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.” (Psalms 42: 8)

Day and night, God’s presence and kindness is with us. We can be open to and conscious of God’s blessings, His Love making its presence known in our lives. God commands His lovingkindness, according to this verse. It is not merely a hope or a possibility. It is a divine mandate, a law of goodness enforced by Truth.

This realization dawns in our days, brightening them. And at night, we have a lullaby, His tender, comforting song. We can end our days with gratitude and a release to His continued, abiding Love. We can hear His song in the night, listen for its beauty and inspiration, and let it fill us, carry us away from ruminating, blaming, fearing.

For Love is the God of our lives. This 24-hour, constant, eternal, ever-present goodness is what truly constitutes and sustains our lives. It is forever at hand, waking us to new ideas and opportunities each day and tucking us in at night with a sweet song of peace and love.
