“If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” (John 13: 14, 17)

The man who most expressed God’s ideal knew the necessity, power, and pleasure of humility and love. He washed the feet of his disciples to show that it was loving care for one another, and service to God’s purpose that was most needed. Every act of Jesus’s was more than a personal moment in time. It was a lesson for us all.

He expected his followers, the students of his teachings of life and love, to do likewise. They are to remain meek and giving, not self-righteous or above the dirty work, the humble compassion and goodness required in each moment. They are meant to stay in that place of obedience to Love itself, to kneel before the demands of grace, and to love one another not only in thought or in special situations or times, but in active ways and at all times.

When our brother seems to have mud on his boots, do we step away so as not to get mud on our own clothes? Or do we help him wash his feet off, get himself clean of his mistakes or miseries, and at the same time cleanse ourselves with divine Love’s affection and approval? Jesus reminded us that caring for another, with humility and patience, was not only a good thing to do, it was the very thing that would make us happy, satisfied, energized, and at peace.

Be ready to help your brother and be ready and willing to receive his gifts as well. We are in this together and what we are in is His healing and renewing Love!

“And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 10: 7)

Harmony and well-being are the present state of being. This quality of life is here for us to claim and experience. God created a good life, a pure identity, a perfect situation that endures. Jesus, who knew and expressed the Christ-Truth, told us the facts: Heavenly harmony is here, God sustains it, and we don’t need to look for it elsewhere or wait for it in the future.

Knowing this, we must walk graceful and grateful in this bounty. We can’t keep this goodness hidden or agree with it only for ourselves. Jesus would not let his disciples hoard the good news. When Love is at the center of the message, it must be shared and bless all. We have to carry this Truth of heaven in our hearts and in our conversation. We have to continue in this elevated awareness and not let the world’s disbelief bring us back down to earth.

We must “preach” as we go. We must make God’s world known by our own gentle yet powerful presence and action. We must do our best not to join the conversation for evil, but to lift the world’s dialogue to goodness, expectation, joy, peace. Of course, we can’t ignore what is around us nor can we judge and decide what another needs. But we can choose to be true to our highest understanding. We can continue to see heaven where earth would try to get our attention, Spirit’s promise and immortality instead of matter’s limitations and dooming prospects.
As you go forth in your daily walk, take your heaven with you and invite the world in to join you. It is their heaven as well and the more the merrier!

“I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God:” (Psalms 40: 1-3)

It may seem on certain days that we are stuck in the mud, maybe sinking deeper into discouragement and despair and fear for our lives, our hopes. This fear itself may serve to paralyze us even further, cementing us to where we are, focused on our troubles, on the walls that seem to keep us locked in and limit our broader view.

But we have a recourse, a salvation. It begins with patience, persistence, and trust. God has never left you and He is greater than your fears and the world’s accusations about you and your prospects. God is always demanding that we stay true to Him. Our faith and trust in infinite good can’t be fleeting and based on human circumstances. We must be as loyal to Him, to Truth, just as His love is to us. We must be true to our Life, believe in its holy purpose and power. Life is God, eternal good.

Stay calm and patient. Listen for the tender voice of Love’s mercy and goodness. Every moment He is blessing you with more good news, an understanding that is the key to unlock the door not only to today’s human misery, but to the very heaven that is a life of Love, here and now. This inspired clarity lifts us up out of the miry clay and shows us that we have always been safely upon the rock, the Truth of Life as God’s own idea, full of faith, gratitude, and a new song of praise to Life ringing out for all to hear!

Daily Inspiration, July 4th

“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (II Corinthians 3: 17)

Let freedom reign! Let it reign. We can recognize and rest in the fact that our liberty is not based on human laws, history, or material conditions. We have freedom because God is Spirit and because Spirit–infinite Truth and Love–is in every place at all times. We can’t be separate from our liberty any more than we can be separated from our own being.

God is present and active. He is consciously and constantly expressing Himself through our lives. His perfect qualities which fill all space are actively setting us free every moment of every day and even through those long dark nights when our vision of things seems dimmed. Infinite Mind is boundless and its ideas can’t be caged in fear or limit. No one can imprison Spirit, and this is the very substance of your life. You are a native of a heavenly earth and subject to the laws of infinite kindness and abundant opportunity.

Let’s celebrate our liberty today and every day. It’s certainly wonderful to commemorate and our national heritage, but our freedom didn’t start with the Founding Fathers of a nation (as they themselves also knew), but with the Founding Father-Mother of us all, the creative Principle, God, in whom there is always naturally and necessarily liberty and justice for all!

Happy Independence Day!

“Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.” (Psalms 116: 7)

We can relax. We can give our personal sense of self over to our true Soul, that loving Giver of goodness and love. We can gratefully release our bodies and our lives to God, as the psalmist did, and praise our divine Soul for His bounty. God has provided for us abundantly. He has granted us more than enough of all that is good and right and true.

The agitated sense of things that rises up can be quelled by our awareness of the Truth of Life. We are not mere mortals suffering through each day with scanty supply and tenuous health and happiness. God has been generous with us. He has given us the gracious plenty of reflection. We are the very image of His qualities, His nature, and so we already include all that He is and has, without reservation and with His wisdom behind its perfect distribution.

Accept the presence of your beautiful bounty. Agree to the fullness of things. Stop trying to reach and strain for the substance of good that is already yours, but instead “return unto rest.” Be the child that rests naturally and trustingly in his Mother’s arms, knowing that every need is met already because of the nearness and tenderness of overflowing Love.

“Belief is changeable, but spiritual understanding is changeless.” (Science and Health, page 96)

Every idea conceived of by human observation, by the evidence of the senses, is subject to change. There is nothing solid about our theories of life and its prospects. Even material science has proved to be flawed, proclaiming a fact one moment and then overturning that conviction when new information emerges. We simply can’t accept beliefs as having any unshakeable permanence, no matter how long they have been held to be true.

Health laws may seem to paint a picture of what our lives must be or not be, and yet these are not solid or invariable. There are exceptions to every case. We are always discovering that the law of matter is not fixed or absolute, and so why should we give it our trust or our fear? And, importantly, it should not get our tacit agreement and unquestioned acceptance. It should not be allowed to write the story of our lives and our attitudes.

Spiritual understanding, on the other hand, is grounded in Truth, the spiritual ideals that never vary. The qualities of God are not changeable because they are absolutely perfect just as they are. Perfect Love, Truth, Life, and goodness are not mere concepts about life. They are abiding principles which, when understood, will always be recognized as the true and sustained view of things. These ideals accepted in human thought can never be lost, for they have their origin in God, the always All-in-all, the changeless and loving Truth of Life.

Daily Inspiration, June 25th

“Now if your experience of Christ’s encouragement and love means anything to you, if you have known something of the fellowship of his Spirit, and all that it means in kindness and deep sympathy, do make my best hope for you come true! Live together in harmony, live together in love, as though you had only one mind and one spirit between you.” (Philippians 2: 1-2, J.B. Phillips New Testament)

Paul had high hopes for his fellow disciples of Christ. He felt deeply that the understanding, comfort, peace, and uplift that his followers found in the Christ-Truth, should not stop with a personal sense of salvation and well-being. If the great blessing of divine Love meant anything to them, it must mean that conscious, conscientious peace must be practiced.

To be Christ-like and to have an honest gratitude for God and His graceful purpose, we must cherish His Truth. We must agree with His law of oneness, of harmony, and every day and in all ways make this practical in our lives. We must realize and claim that One Mind and leave no one out of its embrace. We must dwell in peace with others, bringing Jesus’s teachings of God into our lives and by doing so, witness healing for all.

There is no stinginess in Love. We can’t make exceptions to our caring and expectations for good. We must adore God and our own blessings enough to be faithful to Him, to infinite, perfect Love. Our One Mind must be obeyed as One Mind and in this understanding all shall “live together in love!”

“O come, let us worship before the Lord our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.” (Psalms 95: 6-7)

Let’s come forward and worship our Father. Let’s not wait for desperation to call on Him with expectation of help. Neither let us wait for a perfect human scenario to praise His goodness and His power. Let’s not neglect listening to and following our Shepherd, for the pasture belongs to Him and He knows where we will find rest and when we are to safely play.

God is our Maker. He knows us inside out and designed us to follow Him, to express His intention, to be the sheep that He cares for and who demonstrate His sweet Life. He is our God, the very nature of the good within us, and this awareness leads us home to safety and at the same time gives us the freedom to roam, knowing we will never be left behind. We will always be in His flock and He will always care where we are and how we are.

And the same goes for all the other sheep. Our Shepherd is the Love that made us all. He does not play favorites or neglect any of His own brilliant ideas. Each is important to God and important to the full integrity of the flock. Not one can be lost from it, and all must necessarily obey the Shepherd. He knows the way and the way is divine, perfecting, protecting Love.

“As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.” (Proverbs 26: 2)

The divine Cause is Love. There is no curse from this one and only Source of Life. We have always been out of range of such a false belief, such a cruel attack on us and on God’s infinite goodness. That which would condemn a man or a woman to misery and shame, pain, humiliation, and constant woe, can never land upon us and keep us under its spell. Our Creator loves us.

We are the blessed. We are like those birds that escape the earth by flying above it, expressing their natural freedom from constraints. The sense of a cursed mortal, a man destined to be a miserable sinner or a woman fated to pay the price for an unreal Eve’s mistakes, can’t come to us; it must ever miss its target. We are not mortals who must suffer, but the ideas of God who are truly and permanently blessed.

The curse is never legitimate. It will never be true about you and its shroud will never hide your light, never find you as you are wrapped in God’s blessings. The curse is without cause, without Life, without Truth. It will never have any accuracy, any power to find you or confine you. You are the blessed and beloved. You are not under a hex of evil, but under the infinite grace of God!

Daily Inspiration, June 6th

“Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the reflection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love.” (Science and Health, page 477)

Do you know who you are? Do you really see what makes you up and why it is so uniquely wonderful? Our identity is not personality or physicality. We are not that small and limited. We are not confined to an age and a gender and a type and a history. We are not the result of heredity or environment.

Your identity is the very expression of the infinite Spirit, of God whose purpose and action and substance is Love. Divine Love is the reason for your being. It is why you were caused and why God preserves your sweet self with such great care and devotion. The idea that is you is a demonstration of His Love. It makes His name heard everywhere, and in infinite ways.

We can stop the intense search into our background and analysis of our character traits and their limits and strengths. We can instead be consciously aware of our true identity, that which reflects Love, that “living” Principle, that which is always active and real and eternal in spite of what the senses might present. Know yourself by knowing God and the nature and broadness of His Love. Each idea is precious and each has its unique identity, an individuality based in Spirit, not in matter. Each of the “forms” that God made proceed from this loving Principle. All are of the same perfect substance, made to harmonize with one another, and yet each having its own unique radiance, continuity, purpose, and beauty.
