Daily Inspiration, June 4th

“The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible.” (Science and Health, page 199)

In any human endeavor as we devote our thought to something, as we fully commit to it, we lay hold of a great power to achieve our goal. Setting our mind to anything is a powerful thing to do and when we remain focused on the expectation, we can accomplish far more than we may think possible.

In this passage, Mrs. Eddy qualifies this statement with the word “honest.” We may feel that anything is possible and the sky’s the limit, but an aim that isn’t honest, isn’t genuine, isn’t from the heart, can’t truly be God’s purpose, His necessary plan, and does not have this same power to achieve and also to satisfy. Let’s weigh each idea that comes to us for advancement and decide whether or not it feels like God’s intention, the idea of Truth and Love: Does it mutually bless ourselves and others? Will it make us sincerely happy in the doing of it? Does it meet a need that will give us or others comfort or freedom from fear? Can we feel divine Love’s seal upon it, when all human justifications are set aside?

If you can answer “yes” to these questions, then put your whole trust in this idea to carry itself forth to fruition. Devote yourself to daily listening and following God in order to reach that goal in the right and most timely way. Realize that the devotion of thought to the achievement includes a devotion to God who formed that idea. So with grateful hearts and listening ears, confidently march forth into the endeavor, whether it be large or small, whether it be a healing we are working toward or a career goal that calls us forward. There is nothing that devotion to God cannot accomplish. You are well on your way!

“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.”  (Hebrews 6: 10)

Your good works are not forgotten. All of the heart-felt and God-led endeavors you pursue in caring for others, sharing the goodness, expressing love, and your highest sense of what is needed, is never in vain. God blesses our good–all that is done in His name, in the name of Love.

Our ministry toward others is well worth it. And each of has a unique way of taking that deep and healing love of God and spreading it around to others. We have our calling and this true calling is not selfish or self-indulgent. It gives. We were built to share, to bring our infinite God-qualities to our brothers and sisters, and to also, willingly, receive what others have to give of their love, of that same divine Love that feeds and encourages us.

It may seem at times nice guys finish last. It may seem that we don’t always receive the appreciation we expect for the good we do. But God is aware of the goodness that is genuine, that comes from the heart, for He is at the very heart of it Himself. If we are working and alert and listening and helping and supporting others, we have a purpose that is blessed. If we require human praise or even acknowledgment, then we may need to regroup and reflect. We do what we do for Love and because of Love. If it is honest and if we let God do the leading, we will naturally and necessarily feel blessed and refreshed by doing it, and His Love within us will give us a sense of appreciation that more than satisfies.

“…thanks be to God, Who in Christ always leads us in triumph [as trophies of Christ’s victory] and through us spreads and makes evident the fragrance of the knowledge of God everywhere,” (II Corinthians 2: 14, Amplified Bible)

You are the very evidence of God’s presence. You exude the nature of His goodness as you walk this earth. The Christ has revealed your divine heritage to you. There is no reason to hide this precious light from the world. You have every reason for a confident stride through the world, dappling the way before you with a beautiful and inviting promise.

We have every cause for gratitude. We are triumphant because we have the eternal Christ, the true idea of God with us. We can claim this sweet and powerful goodness as our own inherent and inherited being, and we can naturally and joyously share this knowledge with the world. It is our duty and honor to give of this healing light of Love, just as we have received it ourselves.

The blessing of being the child of God is in expressing it, touching others with the love that uplifts and saves. This is how love multiplies and that “glorious fragrance of the knowledge of God” is found everywhere, sweetening the bitterness of mortal life, and awakening the world from the mesmerism of darkness to the beauty and freedom of Life. Rejoice that you naturally and broadly spread God’s word by your awareness and love of it. Own that! Flaunt it! Be the perfume of Soul that refreshes and invites all to know the Truth of divine Love.

“Never record ages. Chronological data are no part of the vast forever. Time-tables of birth and death are so many conspiracies against manhood and womanhood.” (Science and Health, page 246)

Aren’t you more than a number? Can God’s magnificent idea be confined to an age, a classification based on the passage of time, on that which has no place in eternal Life? We were not conceived on a material date and required to pass through certain material phases, relegating us to the experiences and expectations associated with each age of human life.

Truth sheds light on the conspiracy against us. Divine Love reveals mortal mind’s insidious deceptions which would beckon us into a tapering sense of experience instead of the expanding one which is our true life-walk. How eager we often are to join the club of those who have reached a certain age, to grouse over the expected pains and losses, and to mourn the good old days as if they are all behind us. Do we really want to get on the band-wagon that gives a voice to a depressing lie?

Surely it must be mortal mind–whose most-used trick is “time”–that lures us into this conspiracy, these clubs called youth, middle age, senility, etc. Don’t sign that application! Be at one with the vast forever and wake up to the fact of life as one in which we are new born every day–new to God’s grace, new children subject to God’s laws of Life not material laws of birth and death. You were not made to fit into a box with a number on it. You were made to fly in the unconfined forever, free of any classifications at all except your unchanging status as the image and likeness of God!

“How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.” (Matthew 18: 12-14)

No one is lost to God. Not a single of His ideas is less than precious to Him; all are worth His care, His guidance, a place in His flock, in His loving home. No one has gone beyond or outside of the Father-Shepherd’s interest or influence. No one child has gotten lost in the shuffle of so many others, to disappear and be less than important, less than beautiful, less than beloved.

Those that stay faithful and true–the homebody sheep that stay close to what feels comfortable and right–are already in a solid and familiar place. They are not left alone when the Shepherd goes to seek the lost. His presence and love remain with them, and they know it. They don’t feel slighted when the Shepherd goes in search of the lost one or even the disobedient one. It is what they know He, Love, will do. That missing sheep is one of their own brethren. They don’t feel complete without that little one safe with them.

No one is cast off. No one is abandoned and left to fate. Our God consciously and conscientiously seeks us out. He knows that human mistakes that take us off our human course have not ever taken us out of His Love which is everywhere. He knows the one He has nurtured and He sees this little one’s real potential, goodness, and beauty.

We may seem at times to abandon our best life or may feel abandoned by others, but God, our good Life, has never left us or forgotten us. He knows exactly how to find us for He sees us even when we hide from goodness. He hasn’t stopped believing in us, watching us, and loving us.

Daily Inspiration, May 16th

“For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the Lord.  For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”  (Jeremiah 29: 8-9, 11)

The sources of information seem endless these days. We can always find a qualified or unqualified opinion concerning the prospects for our lives, whether it be our health, our careers, our relationships, or our financial well-being. These modern-day prophets may have more material science on their side than the prophets of old, but they still do not have the voice of absolute Truth.

How often do we hear of a physical prognosis of disease that is treated as a death-sentence, as the last word on the case? The concerns may seem to come from a basis of medical examination or experience and from a basis of legitimate care, but they often lead only to fear and grief, or resignation, surely not God’s thought on our being. The last word on life can only come from Life itself, God. He alone knows what He caused and the nature of His own intention: peace, not evil. We must always plead innocent and let God’s word defend our life, His Life.

Likewise, we should not let our own sleeping or waking dreams dictate terms to us. These are false prophets, parading as truthful sources, as gods that can make or break us. Your night dreams are not prophets of life, nor are the stars or time or heredity. The mortal mind’s fearing concepts will never have the force of God’s word which is infinite, eternal, infallible Truth. Divine Love does not doom His own child to a miserable fate, cause him to give himself over to mere material predictions and interpretations.

Your “expected end” is God’s thought about you and towards you. It is Love’s foresight promising you a future full of hope, satisfaction, peace, and joy.

Daily Inspiration, May 14th

“…put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” (Colossians 3: 10-11)

Putting on the new man is accepting our true identity as the expression of God, of good, of Love itself. This is the message of Christ—that we are loved and loving children of God, the living proof of His Oneness and His perfect Love. Any delay in letting go of the old man, with his personal, limited, selfish, self-defensive, judgmental beliefs and practices is keeping our harmony, health, and joy at bay.

Our renewal is not simply remaking ourselves. It is a release to divine Love’s original concept, His immaculate conception of each of us as perfect, right, brother and sister ideas in a Mind that has only good ideas that naturally harmonize. The recognition and acceptance of our individual identity as God’s own idea must necessarily include the whole of His vision and the law of Life that Christ revealed.

We can’t be “born again,” have our renaissance into the life that God intended, without loving our neighbor as ourselves. The Christ-man is the ideal man who Jesus presented to us and this ideal is every one of us. There are no distinctions, no material or physical classifications, in spiritual Truth. Christ is the true idea of God and of man, every man, and to be His image, we must accept this fact. The Creator made no separations. He made a perfect idea and expression of Himself and this man and woman is to be seen in every place, because God is in every place.

“Hatred and its effects on the body are removed by Love.” (Science and Health, page 374)

Divine Love is a powerful neutralizer. Unconditional love, mercy, forgiveness, compassion, can bring healing between people and nations. It can cause even the most entrenched resentments and anger to dissolve and harmony and respect to emerge naturally and beautifully.

Love, spiritual Love received and expressed, can do the same for our bodies. The hatred that we may hold toward others or feel expressed toward us may seem to be found manifesting itself in physical conditions that are uncomfortable, painful, and threatening to our peace. These unkind symptoms then would only aggravate the discordant view and keep one in the throes of hatred, feeling unloved and unlovable and unloving.

We can attempt to soothe the body with material methods and to soothe the hatred with self-pity or revenge, but none of these can bring us true and lasting peace. Divine Love removes the effects of hatred on the body of our world and the bodies in which we seem to live and move. Be willing to let go of a belief in the power of hate to hurt you. Be ready to stop hating your innocent body and begin to truly love it for its loveliness, holiness, wholeness. Divine Love made you and your life. This Love is therefore the natural restorative. It brings to the body what hatred would try to take away, and settles us back into who we were made to be—the object and expression of pure Love.

“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” (Psalms 34: 18)

Comfort is never distant from us. Encouragement is never out of reach, and grace is always at hand. The grief and sorrow that can seem to overtake us do not separate us from divine Love’s attention and affection. The tears and fears that blind us to Life’s hopes and possibilities are wiped away by the tender hand of God.

Even when we feel we have put ourselves in a rough spot, and our broken hearts are self-inflicted, we are still near and dear to God’s heart, at a perfect place to receive His mercy, understanding, and a fresh and even more beautiful start. When we don’t see anything but our own sins and sorrows, God sees us tenderly and comes to us with His comfort, not His condemnation. He shows us that loss can be gain and that He has never and will never leave our sides because we are His own beloved.

Let’s know that this ever-present Comforter, this perfect Friend, is with everyone. Let us keep our sweet compassion for others, our hearts at one with the world, but let’s not get washed over in pity and discouragement over the woes we see. God is right where His dear ones are feeling hurt, afraid, ashamed. He is the ready rescue for you and for all. He is infinite, powerful, perfect, gentle Love.

Daily Inspiration, May 2nd

“We know that all will be changed ‘in the twinkling of an eye,’ when the last trump shall sound; but this last call of wisdom cannot come till mortals have already yielded to each lesser call in the growth of Christian character.” (Science and Health, page 291)

God’s grace brings a natural pace to our growth. We are promised that we shall all be changed in a moment, that we will witness our true glory as children of God—spiritual, immortal, perfect. This reality of our being does not take time to create, for it is already the truth of life. But, it may take daily listening and following as we come to see this ideal in a way that we can fully understand, appreciate, and experience.

This “last call of wisdom” is our promise and our beacon. God guarantees that we know Him, Life, Love as it truly is. To come into the fullness of such breathtaking knowledge, we must take some necessary breaths along the way. We must daily, hourly, give up those earthen weights that are keeping us down and darkening our way. We must not try to rush out ahead of the lessons needed or we will not fully grasp the final answer if it were shown to us.

The “lesser” calls for growth in our character must be heeded and appreciated. They are there to lead us gently yet firmly and decisively in the way of goodness and Truth. We must realize that anything that doesn’t bring us a real peace needs to be discarded. Anything that does not indicate the presence of Love needs to be abandoned. The selfish motive as well as the self-judgment needs to be given up. We must yield each day, with God’s guidance, a little more of that fruitless human will for that fruitful divine will. Christian character requires our genuine kindness and sincere humility. It necessitates a willingness to be led forward, step-by-step, into our true selves, and to realize also that all of God’s children are worthy of this same timely and timeless glory.
