“Belief is changeable, but spiritual understanding is changeless.” (Science and Health, page 96)
Every idea conceived of by human observation, by the evidence of the senses, is subject to change. There is nothing solid about our theories of life and its prospects. Even material science has proved to be flawed, proclaiming a fact one moment and then overturning that conviction when new information emerges. We simply can’t accept beliefs as having any unshakeable permanence, no matter how long they have been held to be true.
Health laws may seem to paint a picture of what our lives must be or not be, and yet these are not solid or invariable. There are exceptions to every case. We are always discovering that the law of matter is not fixed or absolute, and so why should we give it our trust or our fear? And, importantly, it should not get our tacit agreement and unquestioned acceptance. It should not be allowed to write the story of our lives and our attitudes.
Spiritual understanding, on the other hand, is grounded in Truth, the spiritual ideals that never vary. The qualities of God are not changeable because they are absolutely perfect just as they are. Perfect Love, Truth, Life, and goodness are not mere concepts about life. They are abiding principles which, when understood, will always be recognized as the true and sustained view of things. These ideals accepted in human thought can never be lost, for they have their origin in God, the always All-in-all, the changeless and loving Truth of Life.
