“Can any of you add a single hour to the length of your life by worrying?” (Matthew 6:27, International Standard Version)
Don’t we all need to ask ourselves this question regularly? Clearly, Jesus was letting his followers know that worry was not useful, not progressive or productive.
We may justify our worrying as being essential. We may think our anxieties are legitimate or that worry helps us stay on top of things, alert, prepared. But Jesus would disagree, and Jesus was wise and demonstrated what he preached.
If we want to live fruitful and happy lives, it would behoove us to ask this question and joyously choose to do what improves and expands our lives, rather than the very opposite. We can listen for God’s guidance, trust His moment-by-moment protection of our days and nights. We can let Him keep track of things, knowing we are cared for and that we don’t need to control each situation, overthink what might happen, and lose this precious moment by worrying.
We can exchange worry with prayer. We can breathe and listen, humbly, for God’s Truth and feel His Love in this moment. Worry is not our friend. It is also not natural to us. We can do our best to release the worry. Let it go! You won’t miss it!
