“Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.” (Romans 12: 14, New Living Translation)

This may seem like a difficult or even impossible thing to do. How can we bless those who seem clearly to be against us? Even if we are not facing real persecution, we may believe that individuals are making our lives harder or that they are working against all that we value and hold dear.

But just because something feels hard for us to do, doesn’t mean it isn’t right and truly healing for us and even for those “persecutors.” To bless another is to hear and feel and trust and love God. It is to know that God has made us all, and that to curse another, even to find ourselves in constant criticism and complaint, is to dishonor God. Our curses fill us with hate and anger. This is not our natural state. It is not healthy. It isn’t empowering, even if we believe it is.

Let’s try blessing others. We can start by blessing those we love, or perhaps those strangers whose stories we don’t know. And then we can pray that God blesses those who we feel challenged by. We can turn to God, listening for His goodness, His word about that one and about us. We can just relish the opportunity to feel His blessing touch us, fill our hearts, settle us, and know that this healing love can be felt by our oppressors as well.

We can know that all can awaken to the great gift of being good, of choosing light and love. To pray for God to bless all, and to really want this, is to feel Love acting upon us. This is truly empowering and it is healing for us and for our world.
