“Israel, out looking for a place to rest, met God out looking for them! God told them, ‘I’ve never quit loving you and never will. Expect love, love, and more love!’” (Jeremiah 31: 2-3, Message Bible)

The wandering souls of old and those of us today seeking rest, resolution, peace, are not lost. Our God is at hand, right where we are, coming to us with Truth, with direction, with His Word of freedom. He is looking for us as the verse tells us. God’s people, the ideas of His heart and His creating, are always in His care. And He has never forgotten a single one of us.

We may feel we are unloved or unnoticed, neglected or even hiding away, but the love of divine Love is always seeking us out, always there for us to receive. It always has been. Our fears and the world’s presentations may turn us from the Truth of God’s ever-active presence, but it has always remained. And His Love isn’t apart from us, waiting for us to prove ourselves. It comes to us, meets us as we seek, and draws us in.

We can open our hearts and our eyes and our spirits to God’s saving grace. We can recognize that even as we wander, we can expect to bump into love, love and more love!

“Even if a man should be detected in some sin, my brothers, the spiritual ones among you should quietly set him back on the right path, not with any feeling of superiority but being yourselves on guard against temptation.” (Galatians 6: 1, JB Phillips New Testament)

Humility and compassion go hand in hand. We can help our brothers and sisters escape the wrong turns that lead to despair and darkness and guide them lovingly onto a path that is safe and right and truly satisfying.

Alertness is key. But the inspiration of Love is even more important. As we are receptive to God’s guidance for us, His purpose, we are aligned with what works well for us as well as what can be helpful to others. This is not about judgment or our own human opinions about another’s behavior. It is about heeding God’s call to share His light as we are led, and to let those who may seem to stray, know that there is a better way.

I like that this verse reminds us to both “quietly” and without a sense of “superiority” aid our fellow man. There should be a sweetness, respect, understanding about what we do. We retain our own humility, our awe of God’s presence and love for all of us. We keep ourselves awake to temptation—including that temptation to the sin of self-righteousness.

Let’s be kind and compassionate. Let’s be ready not to judge, but to love.

“I will walk around freely because I sought out your guiding principles.” (Psalms 119: 45, God’s Word Translation)

Life can feel full and free or it can feel confining and limiting. We may blame our situation, others, or ourselves for what may be a less than liberated experience. Certainly, there are influences that can impact us, but this verse reminds us that we have the right to walk about freely, and how this is possible for us.

As we focus on the mortal and the finite, the material and the egotistical, we have set our thoughts, our state of mind, on that which is by nature imprisoning. We can’t move fast or far when our consciousness is stuck in matter and its gloomy descriptions and predictions.

But we can search out God’s guiding principles, as the psalmist did. We can look toward the Spirit of Life, and so awaken to infinite possibilities, our natural and rightful freedom.

We may not be fully certain of God and His purpose and law, but as we seek it, earnestly, looking away from the senses and into Soul’s broad vista, we can leave the self-imposed cage of doubt and hesitation. We can walk freely, safely, eagerly, and be open to the good life that we were made to enjoy!

“The Lord will keep you safe from secret traps and deadly diseases. He will spread his wings over you and keep you secure. His faithfulness is like a shield or a city wall.” (Psalms 91: 3-4, Contemporary English Version)

Relax. Be calm and assured. You are not in danger, vulnerable, susceptible. You are comforted and soothed under God’s mothering wings of Love. Likewise, you are secure in His great fortress, built of God’s impregnable qualities of Truth, goodness, and Life.

We can feel safe when we go out into the world, for God surrounds us at all times. His nature and His Spirit are constant coverage, a ready defense, clear sight and insight. God is able to reveal the “secret traps,” to keep us from stepping into trouble unknowingly. We can walk with confidence by trusting His loyalty, rather than timidly, tentatively, living with doubt and anxiety.

Nestle into the love of Love. Recognize and be grateful that you are always being watched over, tenderly yet powerfully, and nothing and no one can harm you.

“Try to shine as lights among the people of this world, as you hold firmly to the message that gives life.” (Philippians 2: 15, Contemporary English Version)

This is a powerful request. It seems to me quite an urgent one as well. The light is always needed. Oppressive darkness can seem so aggressive, so real, and even unavoidable.

And yet, light always breaks the dark. Even a small flame will dissolve any black space, enlighten a room or a world. We have been given the message of true salvation, that wonderful awareness that we are children of God, that we are inseparable from our Source, Who is goodness, Life, and Love.

And so, as we hold to this Truth, as we identify ourselves honestly, knowing our oneness with God, we not only have access to the light of Life every moment, we have within us the natural call and privilege to share it. We take our inner knowing, our consciousness of reality, into the outer world. We shine with God’s own radiance, and this has a significant and positive impact.

Don’t let the darkness mesmerize you into apathy. Don’t let it cause you to forget what you know and who you are. Instead, remember the light that is Truth and Love and honor it by living with expectation, kindness, and grateful joy. Shine on!

“Be still, be calm, see, and understand I am the True God.” (Psalms 46: 10, the Voice Translation)

I like to come back to this message often. In fact, I feel like I need to really listen and respond to this invitation regularly.

This calmness and stillness is where the power lives. It is where God speaks and guides. It is that sacred space in which He reminds us Who He is and what that means for our lives. This quietness is where the ego and the world’s false messages are drowned out by the Truth. This space of stillness, presentness, is wide open for majesty and miracles.

We can claim this calm disposition even in the raging storm of life. The Almighty is opening up His eternal arms for us to enter in to the realm of sweet peace. It really requires only that we listen, turn toward God with expectation, and relish this natural state of being. It means relinquishing gratefully the feeling that fear and panic are necessary, that motion and activity are solutions, that the battle must be in the noise.

This surrender to the fullness of silence and serenity, opens our eyes to see and to feel God’s perfect action, grace, provision, guidance, and pure, true Love.

“Give me understanding [a teachable heart and the ability to learn], that I may keep Your law; And observe it with all my heart.” (Psalms 119: 34, Amplified Bible)

To be true to God’s law of Love and of Life requires more than blind faith. If we are to sustain our devotion and act from the heart, honestly, in the good that we think and do, we need also understanding.

As we come to know Who God is and who we are to Him, our consecration and loyalty are heightened and powerful. The infinitude of God may not be fully comprehensible to the human mind, but essential aspects are revealed daily, taught to us for our demonstration in life, as we are ready for them.

It isn’t about already knowing everything or even about fully believing, without a single doubt, in that Spirit of God. It is about the “teachable heart and ability to learn” that the psalmist prays for here. It is about being receptive, eager to be instructed, to be fed with ideas and inspirations that clarify God and His Law. It is about humbly listening and gratefully, patiently, letting God progressively teach us His Word of Life and of Love.

“…be careful how you live; be mindful of your steps. Don’t run around like idiots as the rest of the world does. Instead, walk as the wise!” (Ephesians 5: 15, the Voice Translation)

Mindfulness is so often spoken of these days. It seems that we are being called as a world to be more intentionally thoughtful, reflective, aware. This conscious regard for life and our part in it, so clearly articulated here, was what Jesus was teaching and demonstrating.

We must and can walk as the wise! We don’t have to get caught up in what others are thinking or doing, whether to emulate it, compete with it, or to get disturbed about it. We can be careful in our living, in that we intentionally choose to be what God caused us to be. By doing so, we bring light to the world, and enjoy individual peace and progress as well.

And this wise walking means confidence. It is a conviction and certainty that isn’t arrogance or pride, a feeling that we are better than others. It is that humble and powerful walk as the very presence of Love, as God’s own idea moving through the world, with His purpose in us and under us. This means we can feel focused and yet open and flexible; loving and also strong.

This spiritual mindfulness makes our steps sure and our walk of life pleasant and joyful as well!

“For the ambivalent person believes one minute and doubts the next…You’re up one minute and tossed down the next. When you are half-hearted and wavering it leaves you unstable.” (James 1: 6-8, the Passion Translation)

We often find ourselves seeking stability, a sense of security and safety in our lives. We can feel unsteady and not really know which way to go, what to do, how to do it. We question ourselves, our faith, and others.

This ambivalence may be common and seem justified, but it really isn’t doing us any favors. The very instability we may seem to experience is likely not life so much as our thoughts about it. And we can do something about that. We can refuse to waver, and instead commit. We can select and settle into our seats, to witness the goodness that is going on and is to come.

This isn’t about knowing everything or about a human sense of absolute confidence in every moment. It’s about that full-hearted, unwavering commitment to believe in God more than in circumstances; in eternal Life more than in time and limit. It is to refuse to let each challenge be a cause for giving up, for losing faith and loyalty to our vision.

Stand your ground with God. The challenges are stepping stones to discovery. As we make them occasions to lean more on trustworthy Truth, our foundation becomes even firmer. We feel and appreciate the real freedom and peace that God’s protection and affection naturally bring.

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord:” (Jeremiah 29: 13-14)

God is ready for us to “find” Him. The understanding of Life as it truly is, the fullness of divine Love, the Truth that releases us from fear and pain, is here to be discovered and known.

We may feel that our yearning, our doubts and questions, are a sign that we have no faith or that we just don’t have what it takes to gain a more heavenly perspective. But the seeking is God’s demand set in us. He made us to want to know. God put within us the desire to get to the heart of things, to get at Truth and to feel it fully.

And so, this seeking is natural. And the promise is true. We shall find what we seek. The questions yield answers. Those very questions are a way to gain Truth, just like classroom learning requires working out solutions by asking the right things.

The only condition on this full awareness of God’s presence is that you search with all your heart. It is that we seek with sincerity and with expectation. We turn to God with receptivity and openness. This isn’t about blind faith. It is about coming to God with loving readiness, eagerness, seeking with gratitude and with love.
