“For the ambivalent person believes one minute and doubts the next…You’re up one minute and tossed down the next. When you are half-hearted and wavering it leaves you unstable.” (James 1: 6-8, the Passion Translation)
We often find ourselves seeking stability, a sense of security and safety in our lives. We can feel unsteady and not really know which way to go, what to do, how to do it. We question ourselves, our faith, and others.
This ambivalence may be common and seem justified, but it really isn’t doing us any favors. The very instability we may seem to experience is likely not life so much as our thoughts about it. And we can do something about that. We can refuse to waver, and instead commit. We can select and settle into our seats, to witness the goodness that is going on and is to come.
This isn’t about knowing everything or about a human sense of absolute confidence in every moment. It’s about that full-hearted, unwavering commitment to believe in God more than in circumstances; in eternal Life more than in time and limit. It is to refuse to let each challenge be a cause for giving up, for losing faith and loyalty to our vision.
Stand your ground with God. The challenges are stepping stones to discovery. As we make them occasions to lean more on trustworthy Truth, our foundation becomes even firmer. We feel and appreciate the real freedom and peace that God’s protection and affection naturally bring.
