“What is it that binds man with iron shackles to sin, sickness, and death? Whatever enslaves man is opposed to the divine government. Truth makes man free.” (Science and Health, p 225)

The Truth brings freedom! We can celebrate this liberty today by recognizing our right to live our best lives, to accept our God-given freedom from the tyranny waged by material sense and its arbitrary, unloving limits.

We unfairly shackle ourselves with fear when we base our thinking and the resulting behavior on a premise of separateness, materiality, mortality. If we believe we are vulnerable, victims of time; if we buy into the presentations paraded before us by the world that would limit our prospects, we have accepted an unfair bondage.

But the Truth is, we are under the divine government. We are made by God to express His qualities and His laws are kindness, beauty, intelligence, perpetuity, harmony, peace, joy. As we let go of a preoccupation with and fascination over what is dark and evil and fearful, and begin to acknowledge our rights under divine Law, we progressively take off those shackles. We begin to realize that freedom can truly be ours through a change of consciousness, a trust in good, God, Love.

Let’s celebrate our natural independence from limiting lies and rejoice in the Truth that makes us, and all mankind, free!

Happy Fourth of July!

“Even if the mountains heave up from their anchors, and the hills quiver and shake, I will not desert you. You can rely on My enduring love; My covenant of peace will stand forever. So says the Eternal One, whose love won’t give up on you.” (Isaiah 54: 10, the Voice Translation)

Our personal lives and the greater world can seem to get shaken up at times. Fear and discouragement can loom large and attempt to pull us in, pull us down.

But at all times, in all circumstances, we have an anchor, a reliable, unshakeable rock. God’s Love is forever present. It is spiritual, infinite, always living and acting. This enduring and powerful Love is not deterred by obstacles, upset by material circumstances, turned away by human behavior. The Eternal One is eternally one with us, loving us forever.

God can be trusted. He doesn’t give up on us because He knows who we truly are. He is, in fact, the very Life that is in us. We can’t be separated from Him or any of His wonderful attributes. We are at one with God and so with His strength, His Truth, His conviction. And we are always united with the tenderness of His enduring, all-embracing, life-restoring Love.

“Look at the splendor of your skies, your creative genius glowing in the heavens. When I gaze at your moon and your stars, mounted like jewels in their settings, I know you are the fascinating artist who fashioned it all!” (Psalms 8: 3, the Passion Translation)

Let’s behold the artistry of the earth and the skies. Let’s pause and truly take in God’s masterful creation and stand in awe of His creativity and the Love behind this divine design.

We can breathe in God’s beauty and know that this is only what the human eye can behold. Even the endless heavens, the twinkling stars, the expanse of the oceans, and the creatures inhabiting them and the earth, are mere glimpses of God’s spiritual infinitude. The ideas in His Mind go beyond the senses and yet they are always present, revealing goodness in ways tangible to humanity and also felt in the heart.

And we are as much a result of God’s genius as are the moon and the stars and the earth. Each of us is a gem of God’s intention set down on His divine canvas, with completeness, but also with the activity that God, infinite Life, must bring to His creations.

We can gaze at our world and at all those who people it with the eyes of an appreciator. We can see and love the artistry of God and revere the fascinating artist who fashioned it all!

“Now may the Lord move your hearts into a greater understanding of God’s pure love for you and into Christ’s steadfast endurance.” (II Thessalonians 3: 5, the Passion Translation)

In this moment, now, let’s accept this prayer for us. Let’s know that God is able to touch our hearts with His Truth, awaken us to the divine Love and Life within us. This is not a mere hope that we can gain access to some feeling of peace and joy and inspiration. It is God’s promise and intention that we know His Love for us and our unity with Him.

Christ’s steadfastness, the constancy of faith in God as the One Mind and Life, is ours to accept as well. As we open ourselves to receiving willingly, humbly, this pure love from God, we begin to lose impatience and find gratitude in each moment. Becoming aware of the fact of our own natural worthiness to be loved, and the fact of God’s control, releases us from guilt and fear and burden, and so each moment is more meaningful and beautiful, no matter what circumstances seem to come.

We can endure steadfastly because our hearts have been moved by grace, and this grace buoys us, gives us expectation. We treasure the opportunity to experience more of God’s love and light in each new day. Now.

“Any temptation you face will be nothing new. But God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can handle. But He always provides a way of escape so that you will be able to endure and keep moving forward.” (I Corinthians 10: 13, the Voice Translation)

Progress is God’s law. To continue to grow in love and in spiritual understanding is what God requires for us. God made us to know Him, to realize His goodness and to express more fully His nature.

So, we surely can’t be allowed to linger in bad behavior, or to be stuck in a challenge from which it seems impossible to break free. When we are tempted to do what isn’t right for us or when we get pulled into a scenario that seems to mesmerize us with emotions or fear, we can remember that God is with us.

What seems overwhelming and beyond us, is not something God can’t handle. The very trials of our faith and our own sense of who we are can usher in new understanding, a refreshed awareness of what is important, and the humility that can be so saving.

God will always open a way—an escape from what seems to be our fate, our personal flaws, our temptations. He will rescue us with His direction, His Love, His timely provisions, and keep us moving forward with renewed light and the joy of genuine gratitude.

“From that time Jesus began to preach and say, ‘Repent [change your inner self—your old way of thinking, regret past sins, live your life in a way that proves repentance; seek God’s purpose for your life], for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” (Matthew 4: 17, Amplified Bible)

The kingdom of heaven is at hand—it is within our reach at all times. To gain a true heavenly sense of harmony and peace and satisfaction, we don’t need the outward world to change and to bring us treasures on a silver platter. This wonderful kingdom isn’t about an angelic afterlife. It is about a present opportunity to be free.

And this freedom comes from repentance. This repenting is not some act of self-flagellation and penance. It is about changing our way of thinking. It is being willing to release old beliefs and behaviors, motives and fears, and being ready to accept God’s loving purpose for us.

It may seem difficult to change our inner self, as this verse illuminates, but we have God with us in this, helping us. The Christ is revealing that this self that feels so real and unworthy, damaged and fearful, is not who we are at all. Repentance is choosing to no longer cling to the ego’s sense of itself and instead to yield to our true selves—worthy, innocent, humbly ready to live God’s intention for us.

With relief, we can give up the old way of thinking with its limits and lies, and begin to think and act more truly, more naturally, and live a more heavenly life today.

“What you say goes, God, and stays, as permanent as the heavens. Your truth never goes out of fashion.” (Psalms 119: 8-9, Message Bible)

God’s Word of living love is forever. It is enduring because it is more than simply an idea that feels right in this moment. God’s law is the spiritual Truth which undergirds, embraces, and infuses the whole of creation. It has no start or end date. It simply is what is.

And this permanent state of being is our comfort, our assurance, our release. God is reliable and He is always and only pure goodness, light, and immortality. There is nothing limited about God. He is infinite, deathless, changeless, eternal. And so are His expressions. God’s very substance is Life and Spirit, so each of His ideas include His animating, perpetuating qualities.

It may seem that the world goes through phases in its devotion to a higher power, to Spirit, to God. But this appearance of trends and variableness has nothing to do with God. His presence and His infinite care and love for each of us is a constant. It abides with us and for us. It is the Truth that stands—firm, freeing, forever.

“I’m giving you a new commandment: Love each other in the same way that I have loved you.” (John 13: 34, God’s Word Translation)

We must and can obey this new commandment. We can relish emulating Jesus and the way in which he loved his disciples, and all mankind.

Loving each other as Jesus did means recognizing the goodness in another, seeing their true being, honoring them as fellow children of God. It means believing in others, trusting their ability to learn and progress, to be representatives themselves of the Christ-Truth, just as we can also know ourselves to be.

Jesus loved unconditionally, but that didn’t mean he ignored the errors that one might be practicing or holding in one’s heart unnecessarily. His love guided his followers, his friends, away from what was wrong and harmful, admonishing them as needed, but never giving them a feeling that they were not still dearly loved, worthy.

Can we do this? Jesus knew we could, or he wouldn’t have given this as a commandment, a very strong rule by which we should live. Jesus was telling us God’s demand, not his personal one. It was and is a universal law that comes with healing power today and always.

“Even when your path takes me through the valley of deepest darkness, fear will never conquer me…Your authority is my strength and my peace. The comfort of your love takes away my fear. I’ll never be lonely, for you are near.” (Psalms 23: 4, the Passion Translation)

This psalm is so expansive in its promise of care for every human need. We are encouraged to rely on God at all times and to find His qualities sufficient to every circumstance, every moment of uncertainty.

As we go through our days, we may find ourselves in dark places where we feel fear and confusion. But in all these times we are not without God’s presence, His divine authority over us and over all. We may need to face those fears at times, but as we go through the shadows humbly with God, we see light appear, and the dark has no chance of winning.

The challenging times cause us to release our egos, to let go of personal control, and to yield to God’s law of Love. This brings comfort and strength, for God is not for a moment unsure, afraid, unclear. We are never alone, and we can’t be lonely, for Love—our forever faithful friend—is always near, with power, gentleness, and songs of hope and triumph for us today and on the path ahead.

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” (Isaiah 12: 2-3)

Behold! Consciously see, realize, rejoice that God is here to save us. His goodness is infinite and ever-present. The saving, cleansing, sustaining waters of His grace are as abundant as are His active qualities. We can dip our buckets in without hesitation, for there is more than enough Love and Life for us to take and also to share.

We can claim this saving Truth without fear. We can confidently recognize that we don’t need to cower before God, feeling unworthy or ashamed. We don’t have to plead with infinite Love in order for Love to do what it naturally does. We can open our spiritual eyes and behold that the richness of God’s goodness is ours for the taking.

Let’s turn to God with trust and love, rather than doubt or disbelief. Let’s give up all the reasons why we can’t be saved, healed, released, and reach into the wells of salvation with joy and expectation. The waters therein are those sweet drops of inspiration that awaken us to the light. This well contains the qualities of care and comfort that may appear as others coming to our aid, avenues of opportunity opening.

We can humbly and gratefully accept the strength of God and His perfect Truth, lean on Him, and simply let God love us.
