“Selfishness tips the beam of human existence towards the side of error, not towards Truth. Denial of the oneness of Mind throws our weight into the scale, not of Spirit, God, good, but of matter.” (Science and Health, page 205)

Selfishness is an imbalanced way of thinking and living. It puts us on the wrong side, distancing us from that which is enriching, powerful, right and true. Being selfish is not simply about humanly caring for ourselves over others, working always for our own purposes or goals, or even simply “looking out for number one”! It is also a way of thought and behavior that would deprive us of accepting our natural blessings.

Selfishness rejects reality, security, and peace. It denies the oneness that is Mind and His idea, and proposes minds many, actions and behaviors at odds, and a need for self-preservation. But this perception of things is totally false, and so it doesn’t work. It chafes against harmony, attempts to divide the indivisible. It is like trying to separate the idea from its own nature which can’t be done.

Let’s recognize that selfishness is not only thinking only of ourselves, but it is also NOT thinking of God, not allowing Him to be the Mind that He is, the Life that He is, the Love that He is. We are selfish when we cling to human will and a human sense of control, as if we know righteousness better than Truth itself.

So, let’s allow the true balance of being to show forth, yield to God’s oneness and goodness, and discover just how satisfying this unselfish thinking and being is for us and for all!

Daily Inspiration, Valentine’s Day

“Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human needto all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good.” (Science and Health, page 494)

Wouldn’t the very first human need that divine Love would meet be the seeming need for love? God, Love, is always supplying us with the very right and perfect thing to cause us to feel cared for, safe, and satisfied. We can awaken to the fact of God’s presence and Love’s necessary action of loving. Nothing can hide this faithful Lover from us. We are always receiving the kiss of approval and affection from our One and Only True Love.

Every moment of every day divine Love is supplying Love. And perfect Love knows just how to love us—not obscurely or at a distance or without full attention. God is always near, a companion, a caretaker, a voice of cheer and uplift, a caress of understanding. Let’s recognize this forever active divine Love. Let’s accept that no material and delusionary sense of aloneness, loss, or inadequacy has ever stopped God from being present and true.

Divine Love supplies all good for all. Every seeming human need is already met, because the sense of need is false to begin with. Right here and right now, God’s Allness, potency, perfection, harmony, peace, life, completeness fill all space, your being, and there is no inch in your experience or in your heart that is not already filled with divine Love.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Daily Inspiration, February 10th

“Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.” (Psalms 32:7)

God, good, is our refuge, our sanctuary, our peace. He is our only true escape from the delusions and confusions of sense and the limits and lies of material living. This hiding place does not isolate us from others or from Life, but fully unites us with God’s purpose, His harmonious design of Love which necessarily includes all.

We can retreat to this place of comfort and inspiration. We can and must withdraw from the accusations against our beautiful Life that want to inundate us, to make us hear only noise and see only darkness. We must pause in God, in that place of infinite good. We must hide ourselves away, allowing God’s voice, His song, to pierce through and save us. His saving song, whether tender and slow and sweet, or thunderous and awakening and exciting, is ready to be heard and to bring inspiration, hope, and healing.

Let’s not hide from Life in sleep, in complaint, in seclusion, in fear, in a gloomy living tomb. Instead, let’s make our hiding place that which is not only bright and warm and comforting, but also the very source of a new sense of life, a renewed body and mind, a readiness to participate in Love’s great purpose. Then we can truly leave the confines of self and selfishness, for the pleasures and treasures of Soul!

“The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whole wings thou art come to trust.” (Ruth 2:12)

We can receive the sweetness of this blessing. We can relish our work and our lives knowing that this assurance is ours, and it is not a meager promise. Our work, our inspired listening and earnest acting, our God-designed mission and each small moment which contributes to it, is recompensed. It is all given a full compensation, God’s approval which is our substance.

We have come to trust in God’s wings, the expanse of His protection and His comfort, around us and over us. Because of this reliance, we are supplied, we are given every needful thing, including that right and satisfying work which pleases God just as it demonstrates His own goodness and control.

Ruth received this full reward, this acknowledgment of her dedication, her love for God and her family, her devotion to doing what was right, loving, and God-guided. She followed the heart of Love that told her to stay with her mother-in-law after the death of her husband, and to remain faithful to the ideal that she had come to know and love—God and His goodness, Truth, and Love. This trust in Soul’s wings carried her home, to new activities, new life, new love, and a natural and necessary comfort, supply, and peace. We, too, can have such an obedience and trust, and with it the reward that fully satisfies and leads us home to joy.

Daily Inspiration, February 3rd

“The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love.” (Science and Health, page 410)

Our challenges may seem overwhelming, and our strength depleted at times, but the significant thing to remember here is that this seeming trying material condition is not being overcome by human strength. It is Spirit that does the overcoming, the dissolving, the saving.

Divine Spirit’s promise of Allness, of potency, of rightness releases us from a personal sense of struggling and fighting, of being humanly strong and patient and fearless. We are not the source of healing, nor can we be. God, divine Spirit, the omnipotent All that is Love, is caring for us, is asserting Truth actively where that lie appears to be, and is showing us our safety and perfection and peace. It is not human effort that overcomes, nor is our strength of faith and purity of love drawn from human resources.

The very Spirit that protects and defends, renews and revives, is also the Source of our faith and love. We are able to draw upon that ever-present goodness and power, to claim and utilize the very qualities of God on our own behalf. It is because He is faithful that we can reflect that fortitude. It is because His love is pure and perfect and unconditional, that we can wrap ourselves in that very love and breathe a sigh of grateful relief.

The harder the battle may seem to appear, the greater the Truth that beckons us to claim it. We are more than simply hopeful, we are expectant, we are buoyant! Spirit is here to reveal our Life more fully, more gloriously, and we might as well be at the ready for the victory now!

“Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off?” (Jeremiah 23: 23)

God is constantly announcing His presence and not His absence. He tells us always that He is near, at hand, not some elusive ideal to reach for, but the very Truth and Life and Love that are already ours to celebrate and to live. God, good, is the very essence of our own being, our very heart, and our faithful Life. We are never separate from this Life-force, this divine power and Love. It is as close as our own thoughts and our next breath.

Let’s realize this availability of God, the fact that He is always embracing us, speaking to us, protecting us, and loving us with sufficiency and substance. This Bible verse is His firm announcement:  “I AM not over there, either in yesterday, or tomorrow, in someone else’s place or received through someone else’s presence. I AM right here, right now, your own Life, Mind, and being. I AM with you always and this moment.”

Let us seek not by looking at what appears to be trouble, lack, the limits of matter. Instead, let us seek by claiming. Let us recognize and cherish and accept the God that is reality, is Truth, is goodness, is harmony, is the solid substance of what we already are and what we must ever remain—the ideal ideas of His own perfect Mind and the recipients of His ready, steady Love.

“Citizens of the world, accept the ‘glorious liberty of the children of God,’ and be free! This is your divine right.” (Science and Health, page 227)

The law is on our side. We are native citizens of heaven, of the divine Mind’s creation, where all must comply with His perfect law and order. Everything must abide by the rule of Love, and this rule makes no exceptions. Nothing can unfairly accuse or bind us. No evil influence can terrorize us into believing we are insecure in our lives or in our bodies. God’s city is protected on all sides, and every citizen is safe and free.

Let’s accept this liberty. Let’s claim our rightful place in this grand kingdom, in this experience of Life that is God’s own ideal, His own nature finding perfect expression. The law is the law. It is not debatable. It is forever available, active, and ready for our full acceptance. We are children of God. We are the very offspring of divine Love’s love, of divine Life’s life. We are free to be free, right here, right now.

Don’t for a moment believe that the material world can make new rules, or overrule God’s perfect presence and power. Don’t for a moment think that you can lose your rights, that some material circumstance or medical conclusion can decide your fate. A child of God is subject to the divine law alone. You are a child of God. You are a free man and woman. You are perfect and innocent and free and a legitimate citizen of the city of Light and Right. Accept it!

Daily Inspiration, January 20th

“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” (Matthew 18: 21-22)

Really? Isn’t there some occasion where forgiveness is just not necessary or possible? Aren’t there certain behaviors and actions that are simply unforgivable?

Well, no. Jesus, that wise and powerful man whose every word was inspired by God, basically said there were no exceptions. Was he condoning martyrdom? Was he expecting that to be loving and good, we had to do something that seems nearly impossible at times? Was he suggesting that we just lay down and let ourselves be walked upon, or that we just forget about some evil done to us that has really seemed to hurt us or another? Yes.

But Jesus was always all about love and about His Father’s purpose. So this admonition to his disciples of that day and us today, was to do what comes naturally. He was encouraging us, as he always did, to be who we are, the children and expression of God, Love. He was alerting us to recognize that only in expressing love, could we be true to our God and to ourselves. Any other action was betraying Him and going against our own nature, our own comfort, our own peace. It would also admit a power apart from Love, God, which can somehow challenge His authority, alter His harmony, and use His own child for evil.

Forgiveness is likely the highest form of love, next to that which is truly divine. It may feel like a hard task, but, if we are being called to do it, we are ready for it, ready to really honor God and show not only our own ability to transcend mesmerizing human experience, but also the power that Love’s expressing can bring to that very experience. Our forgiveness comes of love for God, for good, for Love itself, and that can’t fail to bless us and all.

“Intelligent matter is an impossibility.” (Science and Health, page 409)

Let’s not give matter so much credit. Let’s stop investing it with intelligence, with the ability to tell us anything, to push us around, to propose ideas and conclusions. Matter has no mind. It has no discerning characteristics or means of thinking. It is not an ego or a power to fight, hope to conquer, or to submit to.

Intelligence belongs to Mind, to God. Mind expresses Its own ideas, and all of them must comply with that one Mind, must obey and necessarily harmonize. Matter and its supposed physical body and sense testimony have no ring of truth, no wisdom, and can’t argue for itself. We can and must stop bestowing matter with a power and intelligence and control that it can’t possibly have. God is the controller and keeper. He is infinite Spirit, and that Spirit is the substance of our being, behaving always according to the properties of Spirit—right, limitless, beautiful, immortal, ageless, timeless, unconfined, and free.

The material body is not a worthy opponent. It is never going to win a debate so do we need to waste our time listening to its claims and arguments? Do we need to rile ourselves up struggling with it, fighting with it, hating its behavior, questioning its intentions? Would we not be wiser to remember that matter is without mind, without power, and that the truth of our perfect being has already won because it is the Truth? We can know and love that our bodies and lives are under the control of divine intelligence alone–that spiritual awareness that is God, and so absolutely perfect and present and incontestable Love, all that is right and natural and good.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” (Ephesians 3: 20-21)

We are under the direct influence of the Almighty One. We are subject to and the recipients of the grand benevolence of divine Love itself. We are being given more than enough, bestowed with priceless goodness beyond what we can imagine for ourselves. Our desires and requests for what we think we need pale in comparison to what the Father-Mother has planned, and has already done.

God’s intention is full of divine wisdom and divine Love. We have every reason to accept His bestowals, to open our hearts and our arms to receiving the benefits of His design for us. We can rejoice in the presence now of His treasures and the limitless possibilities which await us in the next moment. Nothing is impossible to God and the right thing can’t be lost or lost sight of, given to another, or depleted. Our good is ours to have and to know and to experience.

The Christ demonstrated the might and magnificence of what God is able to do for us and through us. Through Jesus’ teaching and example, we have come to know that we have a super-abundance of good ideas and their tangible expression at hand, perpetually. We have a complete and present and necessary capacity to do what God has intended for us, to fulfill His purpose with flying colors. And we can do this gratefully and with the joy that comes from knowing that we are rich in Life, Truth, and Love, forever and ever, without pause or end. Let’s all say “amen” to that!
