Daily Inspiration, March 3rd

“…now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves…They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” (John 17: 13, 16)

Jesus spoke to his disciples with such tenderness and expectation. He was clear on his own identity, his very being as one with God, with Truth, with Spirit and not with matter and its finiteness and limitation. And this conscious awareness of himself with and in God made him certain about his followers as well.

The Christ-message that Jesus came teaching and demonstrating with his life and with his healing, was God’s Love brought to earthly understanding. He was reminding his followers—you and me—that we can be in the world and yet not of the world. Jesus knew that his origin and ours, was spiritual. We are children of God, not of matter, and so while we may feel a part of a material scene, we have the right and the ability to stay separate. We can claim and know our own true selfhood in God, perfect and right and good, and stay safe and joyful, even in the midst of the world’s accusations and limitations.

This quote was Jesus’s prayer for us all. He saw us, his brothers and sisters, as having life and being and purpose and power that are not constrained by material birth and circumstances. Jesus was praying that we all remain in awareness of who we really are. He prayed also that the world would not rob us of our utter joy in this fact.

Jesus demonstrated his heavenly being here on earth and beckons us to join him in this—to recognize who we really are and to abide in heavenly assurance, right here and now, gratefully and joyfully!

Daily Inspiration, March 1st

“We cannot fill vessels already full. They must first be emptied. Let us disrobe error. Then, when the winds of God blow, we shall not hug our tatters close about us.” (Science and Health, page 201)

Are you seeking renewal? Do you want to experience fresh opportunities, true contentment, new understanding? Do you want to be a better person and feel you have more to give, freely and with a full and honest heart?

If we want any or all of these things, we may have some emptying to do. We can’t try to layer goodness over fears, unlovely thoughts, or resentments. Likewise, we don’t want to keep hugging our less beautiful, more worn out beliefs to ourselves when there is an occasion for a whole new wardrobe. We have to be willing to let go of, to release those long-held beliefs about ourselves and our world, and be fully primed for God to do His work with us and for us.

This work is Spirit, Love, requiring that we be what we were meant to be; that we live fully the identity that God Himself crafted—one that is full of childlike receptivity, humility, confidence, eagerness, and a heart that is full of good, not of guilt, shame, false pride, or self-justification. Let divine Love expose those traits and dispositions that are limiting you. If it isn’t in God’s nature, it isn’t legitimately yours. Even if you accepted this limit at one time, it is high time to let it go.

Enter into this day like a newborn child. Be willing to let go of any preconceptions. These are not as deep as you may believe and divine Love is powerful enough and determined enough to wash them away and make room for the beautiful, the new, the absolutely right and genuine you!

Daily Inspiration, February 25th

“Divine Love is infinite. Therefore all that really exists is in and of God, and manifests His love.” (Science and Health, page 340)

Isn’t this a wonderful thought? Just breathe into a recognition that everything, in Truth, is Love expressed. Let yourself rest in the fact that all creation was made by God and consists of His very substance, Love itself.

Divine Love’s infinitude fills all space and every moment. All reality is evidence of God’s Love, the manifestation of active, powerful, kindness, mercy, tenderness, strength, beauty, goodness, peace. This Truth resonates in your heart already. Love’s ever-presence and power are deeply known by you. Trust this inner awareness of Love and let it override and annul that belief that anything else is going on.

As we accept, in spite of contrary appearances, the unchallenged presence of Love, we are able to see this Love reflected in every place. As we align ourselves with Truth, God’s own perspective, the mesmerism is broken and we begin to see beyond the limits that would parade hate and evil and conflict before our view. This higher perspective does not weaken us, but gives us access to true power, the invincible power of the Almighty.

Creation is God’s presence made known. It is Love expressed. You are Love and every idea He caused is Love as well. Try not to fight with this or make exceptions. Claiming and accepting this fact will give you a day and a life full of real peace, joy, and power!

Daily Inspiration, February 23rd

“I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too—your reassuring presence, coming and going.” (Psalms 139: 5, Message Bible)

God, the Almighty One, has our backs. He is our reliable protection and companion through each day. He is leading us ahead with wisdom and strength, and also assuring that we can leave yesterday behind with confidence and freedom.

There has never been a place, time, or experience where God has left us alone. He accompanies us in all that we are and all that we do. God is Love—the very Love that is with us and in us. He is the goodness that is the very substance of who we all really are.

You can trust that God is cleansing past mistakes, restoring harmony where it seems lost, cleaning up the mess, without a trace, that we may believe preceded this moment. We can walk into this new day with innocence and readiness. If we look behind us all that is truly there is God, the perfect good, the right Mind and Life.

Likewise, as we head forward into the seeming unknown, we have no reason for fear. Up ahead is the One that we know well and Who knows us: Divine Love, our own Father-Mother-Life. So there is a familiar face in our new day, walking with us step by step, beckoning us onward. Our infinite God has cased the area, made it ready for us, and rolled out the red carpet for our perfectly-timed entrance!

Daily Inspiration, February 18th

“We should examine ourselves and learn what is the affection and purpose of the heart, for in this way only can we learn what we honestly are.” (Science and Health, page 8)

We may be used to examining our physical state of being, checking for or being aware of signs of sickness or of health; of weakness or of strength. We may put a lot of effort into this type of exam, or let others do it for us.

But a true examination of ourselves and what really makes us tick and keep on ticking, is one which seeks out the Truth. Who we really are and how well we are expressing this real you and me, is found by looking to our hearts, to our affections, to the place where Love naturally and  necessarily dwells.

Take a moment, or many moments, to pause for reflection. Are my motives at their best? Do I really love others and myself? Am I grateful, appreciating good, yearning to know God’s Love better and to express it more completely? Or am I taking an opposite view—agreeing to a limited view of myself or a self-centered approach to others?

This type of examination isn’t meant to lead us to guilt, nor should we go in to this activity looking for trouble, expecting to find something bad and then justifying its presence. We must embark on this exploration as a prayer. It is communing with God and letting Him, divine Love, reveal what makes sense in His beautiful creation and what really does not belong there, and hence has no real power to remain or to harm us.

Take a good look at yourself. I think you will find that your purpose and affection is better than you think—full of light and love. Don’t fight that intention or limit it with material reasons why you can’t be what God caused you to be. God made you good, pure, loving, and expressing the health and happiness that is the natural result of His purpose. This is who you are honestly are. Relish the occasion to discover this anew and to live it fully and freely!

Daily Inspiration, February 16th

“To talk the right and live the wrong is foolish deceit, doing one’s self the most harm.”  (Science and Health, page 448)

Our words and our actions should be in sync. A disconnect between what we are saying and what we are living is consequently out of balance, discordant, inharmonious, and doesn’t serve any good purpose. Such a hypocritical life can be misleading to others and even more harmful to oneself.

We may find that we are clear on right and wrong, inspired by good ideas, and more than willing to share them with others. But getting preachy without a real awareness of what our declarations mean in life-practice, or covering up our lapses (even to ourselves), is hindering our absolutely natural progress and the healing influence we can have on others.

This doesn’t mean we have to be humanly perfect, to always be at the point of the ideal. What it does mean is that in order to be living in an honest and healthy way, we must be careful not to let our words get ahead of our own practice, nor to be untrue to our own better selves by allowing wrongs to go unchallenged.

Living dishonestly is living out of line with Truth, with God, and beneath our own potential. Be gentle with yourself. There is no reason for shame. But there is a very good reason to share from your own heart, right where you are. We always have enough to give and new opportunities to learn how to be purer, better, happier, and healthier—our true and wonderful and honest selves!

Daily Inspiration, February 11th

“Above all things have intense and unfailing love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins [forgives and disregards the offenses of others].” (I Peter 4: 8, Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

There are many productive things we can do. We can be diligent in our work, patient, alert, and disciplined. We can use our intelligence, teach others, and be faithful to a high moral standard.

But, this verse reminds us what is of ultimate importance. Above all things, we must have love for one another. We must find within us this deep well of love that must be expressed and which is powerfully healing—both for others and for oneself. We are not asked to merely be nice or to express love sporadically or tepidly. Our love must be strong, heartfelt, persistent, and warm.

This is God’s Love shining in us. This radiant affection is always there for us to express even when we don’t think that it is. The infinite, ever-active Love of God clears away a sense of wrong, of being hurt or misunderstood, and reveals the Truth of all of us as we really are. Divine Love does not judge and condemn. It washes us all clean, strengthens, adjusts, re-aligns, restores, and allows us to focus on what is good and productive in our own lives and with that sweet benefit of seeing others renewed as well!

Daily Inspiration, February 9th

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts away every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit. But he trims clean every branch that does produce fruit, so that it will produce even more fruit.” (John 15: 1-2, Contemporary English Version)

Jesus knew that his life and its ability to bear fruit had everything to do with God, his Father. He was aware that while he could humanly go about attempting good works and a good life, it was only by yielding to God’s loving care and cultivating influence, that Jesus would really accomplish his work and grow in a way that would cause others to flourish as well.

Jesus wasn’t speaking only for himself here. He was a teacher. He was bearing witness with his words and his life to an active principle, God’s control over each one of us and the garden of our lives. Jesus reminds us through this illustration that his Father and ours is the Gardener. God planted us securely in His Life with the intention to prosper. In order to do this, God, the perfect Caretaker, tends to us continually, never leaving us to the elements of human experience or to mere opinions about ourselves and what is right.

Anything in our lives and in our concept of ourselves that doesn’t help us show forth His intention of beauty and goodness and growth, is cut away. He is going to prune you of those faults you may not realize you have as well as those fears you are well aware of. Both are weeds that hide your beauty and hinder your ability to burst into full flower.

Likewise, those good things that we are demonstrating may require renewal also. It is not always right for us to keep on doing things just the way we are doing them. We may need to start fresh every so often so that new ideas can take root. We may need to be cleansed of things like pride or false responsibility that may come with being productive, like weeds growing up alongside the good plantings.

Jesus was a true vine. He showed how wonderful and healing it was to yield to God’s wise hands, and in so doing, not only to do good, but to be the very solid root of a garden that would endure forever. See your necessary place in this abundant, flowering, beautiful Life and be willing to let God do His careful and certain gardening to make sure you are always exactly as fruitful and lovely as He intended you to be!

Daily Inspiration, February 4th

“You have shown me the path to life, and you make me glad by being near to me.
Sitting at your right side, I will always be joyful.” (Psalms 16: 11, Contemporary English Version)

God is our companion and guide. He is taking us on the right course and instructing us along the way. His goodness and clarity and fearless confidence is always with us, defending and encouraging and assuring that we stay the course, see the truest Life for ourselves, and accept its great possibilities, day by day.

God’s qualities of Love, Truth, peace, harmony, are the very demonstration of Life. God is showing us the way the path looks and that the destination is already reached by being on that course, walking in Life and with Love by our side and in our hearts. This is the fulfillment of Life: to walk daily in God’s grace. It is to be with Him, and not in defiance of Him—rejecting both good and our own true identity.

We can also be still in this awareness of His presence. We can sit and relish Life, the fact that we are safe and sound right now and that this moment contains power in its grateful pause. To sit at God’s “right side” is to be in a place of honor and power. It is by aligning ourselves with, trusting, getting comfortable and friendly with divine Love, that we feel at ease in a place of peace and reflected authority. This place is rightfully ours, because God put us there and remains with us.

In His presence and with His light to guide us and companion us, we can let go of the sense of burden and grief and worry. We can, like the Psalmist, simply and always be joyful!

Daily Inspiration, February 2nd

“Here and now we are God’s children. We don’t know what we shall become in the future. We only know that, if reality were to break through, we should reflect his likeness, for we should see him as he really is!.” (I John 3: 2, J.B. Phillips New Testament)

This is a future promise and at the same time a very present assurance.

It may seem that we are constantly seeking a truer and more complete sense of God—of Life and goodness and peace. We yearn to feel better about who we are and to experience contentment in ourselves and with others. John’s message offers us a hope of this deeper awareness. But it also reminds us at the very outset that this hope is already fulfilled, ready, at hand.

Here and now we are God’s children. We are never going to be God’s children more than we already are. We are conceived by Him and designed to absolutely express His purpose, His Life, His continuity of good. We may not always see ourselves clearly, but that doesn’t stop the fact that this is who we are—the beloved ideas of a loving God, made in His image and likeness and built to thrive.

Our grand work of life, then, is discovery. It is each day seeking and finding out a little bit more about God, and by doing so seeing ourselves better as well. We are, in fact, pursuing our true purpose in this; for we are coming progressively to know divine Love more deeply, more purely, more truly, and recognizing this powerful living Love as our very substance, our being, our joy, and our glory!
