“Jesus spoke to the people again and said, “I am the light of the world. The man who follows me will never walk in the dark but will live his life in the light.” (John 8: 12, JB Phillips New Testament)
Don’t we want to live our life in the light? Don’t we want to feel inspired and awake to what is good, to feel and express radiance? Wouldn’t it be lovely to stop groping around in the dark for answers, or perhaps to feel our lives must be hidden or small?
Jesus is inviting us all to come out into the sunshine and so to feel alive, awake, and purposeful as well. We have our guide. Jesus shared and demonstrated the Truth of God as Love, as Life itself, as the Source of good, and as the Father and Mother of us all.
This light, this Christ-message, is our lamp today. It is ever with us and can’t be lost, because it isn’t merely a nice thought, a pretty idea; it is the very heart and soul of who we are. God is light and in Him is no darkness, as we read in I John. And He made us like Himself, out of His own substance—light, love—so we must naturally shine.
This light is ours to discover and accept in ourselves. It’s God’s own light, so it never fades, nor is it localized—in one and not in another.
Let’s do our best to turn away from the sense that we are limited, burdened, small. Let’s instead accept the light in us, and live in this light of God with gratitude and joy.
