“It is worth nothing for a person to have the whole world, if he loses his soul.” (Mark 8: 36, International Children’s Bible)

It may seem normal and natural to want to acquire things—money, property, status, respect, human success. Seeking a betterment of our circumstances and gaining more knowledge can certainly lead us to good things. It’s right to want to improve life, to learn and grow.

But if our aspirations mean giving up our values, breaking away from God’s purpose of Love and light, we are on the losing end. If we end up gaining accolades, attention, and wealth at the expense of our honest and good hearts, our integrity, our innermost sense of what is right, we have lost our soul.

Having the whole world is not ultimately going to be satisfying, nor will that perfect life we have willfully crafted likely really endure or continue to feel so perfect. Holding onto our soul—truly cherishing and protecting that genuine goodness within us, that love God gave us to feel and use—saves us from this disappointing end.

And let’s remember, it’s never too late. We have a choice in each moment. Our soul belongs to God, and as we humbly turn to Him, we can always get back on track, find ourselves again, come home to the heaven of our worthy wonderfulness in God, the Life that suits us and satisfies our sweet souls.
