“Jesus said to her, ‘Daughter, you took a risk of faith, and now you’re healed and whole. Live well, live blessed! Be healed of your plague.’” (Mark 5: 34, Message Bible)
This dear woman had been hemorrhaging for twelve years. She had been treated by physicians, seeking a cure, but the condition only worsened.
She was compelled to come to Jesus. She felt drawn to be near him, to touch just the very edge of his robe, in trust that it was enough. She likely battled her way through the multitudes that were thronging Jesus at the time. In her wearied state, she was still brave in her determination to be healed.
It may have been desperation, but it seems also likely that the Christ-Spirit itself emboldened her. She felt a sense of expectation and trust and took a risk of faith. This risk paid off, for Jesus himself felt her touch in the crowds. She was healed and he was touched himself, by her faith. He called her “daughter,” restoring to her a sense of innocence, washed clean of years and trials. Jesus left her with a sweet and rich blessing: Live well! Live blessed!
Let us be inspired by this story of healing and be more willing to take risks of faith, expecting good by getting closer to God, leaning on Him, seeking the Christ in times of need. These risks bring rich rewards and never leave us where they found us.
