Daily Inspiration, April 19th

The apostle says: “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.” This thought of human, material nothingness, which Science inculcates, enrages the carnal mind and is the main cause of the carnal mind’s antagonism.” (Science and Health, page 345)

The ego, that carnal mind that wants to be master of its own fate, clings to any control it may appear to have. That thought of self as separate from God, as its own creator and subject to its own frailties or strengths, fights for a life it does not have, a power it cannot possibly possess.

We are deceiving ourselves and suffering the consequences of such a blindness, when we assume that the human personal sense of ourselves is anything at all. We are “nothing” in this sense, for matter and separation are untruths. But, the great fact is that we are at one with the something, the grand and noble and perfect and powerful all-presence that is God’s own Being. So this giving up of self is a gain of an individuality that is sparkling with beauty, potential, originality, and limitless life. It expresses God’s qualities naturally rather than those quirks of personality that we would claim make us up and determine our happiness or our hell.

The “carnal mind” wants to keep its false concept alive. It would have us always fighting, up and then down, winning one day, losing the next day, feeling powerful and then overwhelmed, when truly it doesn’t know a thing about us and our life. God is All and we can rest in the fact that we belong to Him. We are nothing of ourselves, but everything in the expansive expression of His Life, Truth and Love.
