“As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being. The Scripture reads: ‘For in Him we live, and move, and have our being.’” (Science and Health, p. 361)
We are not individuals seeking a relationship with God or choosing not to. We are always, whether we recognize it or not, completely at one with God, good. There is not an inch or a moment of separation between us and our Father-Mother-Love.
The Scriptures announce the glorious fact: We live, move, and have our being in God. Where God is, we are. Where we are, God is. We exist as the very expression of His presence and beauty, His light and love. No human choice or circumstance can remove us from Him. God’s qualities must be expressed by His creation. We are the necessary proof of His presence and action.
The metaphors in this quote help illuminate this wonderful relationship. We are not the ocean, but as drops of water, we are forever at one with that deep and broad and life-giving expanse. We are not the sun, but we are the rays that emanate from that constant source. We are not the creators or keepers of that water or that light, but we live in it, express its properties, and are joined together in God’s holy purpose of Truth and goodness and Love.
