“So for the sake of Christ, I am well pleased and take pleasure in infirmities, insults, hardships, persecutions, perplexities and distresses; for when I am weak [in human strength], then am I [truly] strong (able, powerful in divine strength).” (II Corinthians 12: 10, Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

We may not all have the grace and fortitude of Paul. It may seem difficult to really take pleasure in our challenges, and ours may pale in comparison to his—physical persecution including whipping and stoning, multiple imprisonments and constant threats, and even a shipwreck.

But Paul makes a point we can all consider and appreciate. When we are faced with troubles, either around us or in our own thinking, we have a beautiful opportunity. When we find ourselves at our weakest and most perplexed about what to do; when we feel that we are in beyond our depth or that all the “odds” are against us, we are primed to gain the greatest blessing and the salvation we seek.

For when we are humble—no longer feeling that we, personally, can control things, save ourselves, figure it all out—we are required to lean on God. Our humility in these times, our willingness to release ego and turn to divine help, gives us strength, wisdom, and capacity beyond ourselves.

God’s power can comfort us, inspire us, and lead us out of trouble in ways we might not have seen or understood humanly. This trust saved Paul multiple times. It can save us as well.

Just remember, humility brings power, for yielding to it allows God to be God, to be the almighty Life that loves you.
