“And never let ugly or hateful words come from your mouth, but instead let your words become beautiful gifts that encourage others; do this by speaking words of grace to help them.” (Ephesians 4: 29, the Passion Translation)

Have you thought about your words as gifts? Have you considered how your words can bring comfort and encouragement, hope and joy, and that these are truly beautiful gifts to one another?

On the other hand, we can choose to speak in ways that are ugly or hateful, often based on defensiveness or fear. These reactionary words may seem relatively harmless to us, but they can certainly be received in ways that are neither helpful or healing, to another or to ourselves.

We can think before we speak and consider our words themselves to be precious gifts. And when we speak with a heart that is humbly awake to God’s purpose of goodness and Truth, then grace speaks through us. We naturally have a positive impact on others, and we ourselves gain the satisfying gift that giving with love surely must bring.
