“Don’t let your character be moulded by the desires of your ignorant days, but be holy in every department of your lives, for the one who has called you is himself holy.” (I Peter 1: 14-15, JB Phillips New Testament)
It’s been said that we can’t change. But this would indicate that we can’t grow, can’t learn, can’t reform or refine our motives and our attitudes.
Of course, we can move out of ignorant desires and into a brighter, purer concept of ourselves and our presence in the world. We certainly don’t need to condemn ourselves for our past mistaken views or behaviors, but we do need to stop clinging to them as if they are who we are and who we will always be.
God made you holy. And He calls you forward each day to understand what that means and to live more in accord with your true character, the nature that is not only more loving, good, and righteous, but also more comfortable and satisfied.
Remind yourself who you are. Whatever you are doing, don’t forget that you are God’s holy child, and that to act like it, to think this way, is to be true to Life, true to God and to His design.
It may take some discipline to see through the habitual thinking about ourselves, with all its judgment and limits. But this daily conscientious pause to see ourselves more clearly, more beautifully, is worthwhile. It will not only change your life for the better, but will impact positively the lives of others as well!
