“Treat other people exactly as you would like to be treated by them—this is the essence of all true religion.” (Matthew 7: 12, JB Phillips New Testament)
Let’s gratefully, graciously, gracefully obey this divine demand. This is the Golden Rule, and Jesus knew that it was vital, the heart and soul of all true worship.
If we love God, if we want to feel and know His presence and serve the ideal that is Love, live the freedom that is Life, be protected and upheld by Truth, then we must recognize this non-denominational tenet and follow this precious rule.
Think about it. How do you want to be treated? Do you want your true motives and best actions to be appreciated rather than being judged for your occasional mistakes? Do you want to be treated with patience and kindness when you are unsure? Do you want to be heard when you speak and comforted when you feel afraid?
Then recognize that we must do the same to others. With the best of intentions, we may often assume that others are not as sensitive as we, more confident, or that their motives are not good. These assumptions don’t weigh into the Golden Rule. It is straightforward. Treat others as you would have them treat you.
And treat yourself kindly as well. Show that mercy and understanding to yourself. This is also golden. For with Love are we safe, protected, peaceful. In this true universal church of compassionate thought and actions, we can sing our songs of praise honestly, and God is rightly honored and well-pleased.
