“I ask that you’ll have the power to grasp love’s width and length, height and depth, together with all believers. I ask that you’ll know the love of Christ that is beyond knowledge so that you will be filled entirely with the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3: 18-19, Common English Bible)
Paul had this earnest prayer for the Ephesians. He often preached about how best to be a true Christian, a follower whose behavior was upright and who was faithful to God and a higher and holier sense of life.
This prayer declares and encourages the true power and purpose behind any goodness that we can strive to achieve. Paul wanted for those whom he addressed and for all “believers” to realize the greatness of God’s Love. This was the core of being disciples and living a life that glorified God. It was the message of the Christ.
This knowledge of the fullness of deathless Love is not something that can be gained by human goodness or human intelligence. Paul’s prayer for us is that we grasp that which is known in the heart, felt through faith and trust, and which is truly too big and beautiful to describe in words.
And yet, this very awareness is not far from us or out of our reach. It is both the ultimate thing and at the same time the most intimate. It is what we are made of and what God unfailingly expresses to us and through us—eternal, boundless, saving, exultant, triumphant, unifying, healing Love.
