self-examination

“We should examine ourselves and learn what is the affection and purpose of the heart, for in this way only can we learn what we honestly are.”  (Science and Health, page 8)

Knowing who we genuinely are is a key to experiencing a life true to ourselves and faithful to God’s glorious purpose for us.

Discovering ourselves can sound like an act of personality analysis and dissection of our past and our genetics. But fruitful examination begins with seeking the heart for its motives and ideals. It is looking within our deepest selves to find out what moves us, what inspires us, and why. This exploration isn’t something meant to dredge up our guilt or ignorance or fear. It is an adventure we take with divine Love, to get acquainted with the Truth of ourselves as well as to release the lies that want to keep us from finding that satisfying reality.

Don’t be afraid to seek with God. Take His intention with you. God’s plan is not to make you suffer or to punish you. He is causing you to look to your heart’s true affection and purpose so you can live the worthy and wonderful life He made you to live.

Reflect on things with devoted activity but not with anguish. Don’t jump to conclusions, either, or get ahead of what God is sharing with you about who you are and what is right for you. Relish the opportunity to truly put down and out the limits you may be agreeing to, so you can see those pure and lovely desires and capacities that are ready to show themselves. Finding yourself as God made you to be is true heaven!
