“Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action.” (Science and Health, page 454)

Moving forward with grace and success is reliant on the certainty and strength of our starting point. And where we truly begin is in our thoughts and in our hearts. The premise is the launch pad and when we start with a motive that is right, we will take off with power, poise, and productivity.

Look to your intentions. Take that pause to reflect on why you are doing something or even why you are not. Selfish reasons don’t stand on a firm foundation. They don’t have the power of God’s Oneness and Love behind them. If our motive is to win so another can lose, or to seek revenge, or to make another person look bad so we can look good, this isn’t going to serve us very well.

Likewise, if we find that fear is behind our action or inaction, or we are doing something out of pride or human will (simply pushing forward because we think we “should”), we are not likely to feel that “strength and freedom” we would want and need in order to accomplish wisely and well.

A right motive is one that aligns with God, good, Truth. It is a motive that is loving, that feels honest to us, and that is attended by a desire to be and to do good. We may find that a particular action or choice is a step out of our comfort zone, but that bravery feels compelled by God’s protective hand and not by mere bravado or unready willfulness.

Take a pause to weigh your intentions. You are made to act from goodness. It is how you were built. Recognize that rightness within and allow those pinions, those wings of thought, to cause you to soar freely and fearlessly and fruitfully!
