“In the multitude of my [anxious] thoughts within me, Your comforts cheer and delight my soul!” (Psalms 94:19, Amplified Bible)
It may seem at times like we have a crowd of fears and worries just battering around in our thinking. Sometimes these mesmerizing thoughts seem out of control and insurmountable. We feel caged in, companioned with a slew of wild beasts from which we can’t escape.
But there is God right there. God’s presence and His peace are forever at hand. They are ready to comfort and cheer and delight our soul, as the inspired psalmist knew. This poet was aware that material sense and circumstance would pummel our natural peace and cause us to feel out of control—controlled by anxiety, rather than reason, trust, God.
But he did what we can do as well. He remembered God. He praised God’s presence rather than admitting to His absence, that which was really impossible. Those anxious thoughts are a mortal, messy, mass of junk. They can be put out quickly by turning away from them, seeking refreshment and cleansing. God’s comforts cheer us, bring us peace, and reveal reality, harmony. These pure ideas give us the clarity that reveals a multitude of angels right where those devilish beliefs had us in their thrall.
Give up those anxious thoughts that will never heal and let God’s comforts cheer, delight, and restore your naturally peaceful soul!
