“Convinced of the fruitlessness of their toil in the dark and wakened by their Master’s voice, they changed their methods, turned away from material things, and cast their net on the right side.” (Science and Health, page 35)
The disciples weren’t having a good day. They had lost hope and seemed destined to spend hour upon hour without catching a single fish. The elements seemed to be against them and their own gloominess kept them from seeing the ease of an answer and a blessing already at hand.
They needed the fish for nourishment and they needed the work to feel successful, for satisfaction, worth, and peace of mind. And with the voice of the Christ, they were given both. They were beckoned to stop their fruitless toil and change their methods. They needed to choose the right side, where spiritual Truth was abundant and where all their needs were already met. This fishing, this spiritual seeking, reaped the rewards of a net full of fish and a heart full of joy, expectation, and gratitude. They were ready to work, and to keep on listening.
We can hear this Christ voice as well, awakening us from the mesmerism of peering over the boat on the wrong side into the dark depths of emptiness. This clear and wise and practical voice of Truth is calling us to know the easy way, the way that does not confine itself to material methods, but opens itself to the instruction of God, to inspiration, to refreshment, to Life as it really is—nets full of ideas that feed bodies and spirits with all that saves and satisfies.
