“MOTHER. God; divine and eternal Principle; Life, Truth, and Love.” (Science and Health, page 592)

We are always being mothered. We are the children of God, and She is divine Love—pure, perfect, unconditional, faithful. While we can certainly revere and appreciate the fatherly qualities of God, God’s Motherhood is truly powerful and wonderful.

For as this expansive definition describes Her, this Mother-Love, this Life-giving, nurturing One, is an eternal Principle. This divine mothering is always going on, right where we are, and we can experience it fully. There is no child, no idea of God, none of us, left out of this warm embrace. We can turn to our Mother-God and receive Her Love, that spiritual approval, kindness, devotion.

Our human mothers and those who express these qualities in our lives so beautifully, male or female, are God’s own representatives. They are the evidence of this gentle power, this tender might, which is healing, comforting, supportive, progressive, peaceful. And the Source of these holy attributes is God, the Mother of the universe, of all that is good and right and lovable—of you and me!

“He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]—yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end.” (Ecclesiastes 3: 11, Amplified Bible)

God’s design is marvelous. His creation is not only masterfully beautiful, it is also absolutely right, appropriate, timely.

We are embraced in and supported by God’s intention. He is revealing His own glory, variety, love, intelligence, creativity, in every moment. This is our life unfolding, for Life is God, boundless good. Life is Spirit, and so it unimpeded and unlimited. And God’s plan is His alone. Infinitude is unknowable by the human mind.

But while we can’t fully grasp all that God knows and is, we are not distant from it. Divine Love is not withholding information. God has put in our hearts a wonder, a desire for awareness, understanding. This longing for God, for the knowledge of Life and Love, is within each of us. And this promotes our growth, our readiness to receive and enjoy the next installment in His wonderful story of Our Life.

“So then, take your stand! Fasten truth around your waist like a belt. Put on God’s approval as your breastplate. Put on your shoes so that you are ready to spread the Good News that gives peace.” (Ephesians 6: 14-15, God’s Word Translation)

Here’s how to really get dressed and ready for our day! We can see what we already have in our spiritual closets and properly clothe ourselves for success, freedom, a winning and worthwhile day.

We can take our stand against whatever mortal life wants to throw at us. This firm stance is not about willfulness or human bravery or endurance. It is about being equipped, by God, with all that Spirit has to offer. These infinite qualities of Spirit prepare us for what is needed.

We have the Truth of God’s presence, power, and of our own divine heritage. This girds us with authority. We have God’s Love, His approval, as our breastplate. Our defense comes because we are God’s beloved, His cherished, and because we know this. This knowledge engenders fearlessness.

And we can put on our shoes and go forth! When we’ve taken that conscientious stand with God, recognizing His presence, we also know what our job is. We know that what He has given us, this wonderful and healing Truth, needs to be spread in the world, through the way in which we live our lives. We can go forward confidently sharing this good news that brings true peace for all.

“…we must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into. Then we will be able to run life’s marathon race with passion and determination, for the path has been already marked out before us.” (Hebrews 12: 1, The Passion Translation)

We can progress steadily and succeed with freedom, moving with energy and joy, if we prepare appropriately. Carrying extra baggage and allowing wounds to fester, will only slow us down. It will prevent us from truly seeing and appreciating the view along the way; the one that God has prepared for us.

You have a divine purpose. God has a holy and wonderful intention for you that includes a deepening understanding of Life, of your identity, and of God’s goodness and Love. God’s design for you is also one that makes an impact in the world, in a way that only you can.

We can turn to God as we continue on this journey, yielding up our resentments and our fears, and those false desires that don’t help us prosper. We can agree to be ourselves, that true self that isn’t about anger and darkness; that isn’t dwelling in the past, but is eager, passionate, determined to move forward on the path that beckons with its enduring treasures to appreciate and to share.

“Yes, he alone is my Rock, my rescuer, defense, and fortress—why then should I be tense with fear when troubles come?” (Psalms 62: 6, The Living Bible)

Troubles may seem unavoidable. Sure, we’d love for things to go smoothly, and for good to unfold in our experience. A fruitful life with abundant joys is a right desire, and one surely in line with God’s promise for His children.

But when things happen that feel out of line with this loving plan, we have an abiding place. We can gain an even greater understanding of God’s qualities, and of the measure of His love. Rather than succumbing to fear, tensing up and bracing for a challenge we must personally confront, we can recognize that we are being defended, rescued, saved, and uplifted by God and His ever-present Truth.

You stand on a Rock that is strong, stable, and raised high above the evil accusations the world would aim against your goodness, your health, your joy. God, the Love that is Life, is reliable, powerful, and ready to lift you out of danger and at the same time reveal a view of Life, of your own identity and integrity, beyond what you have realized before.

Don’t carry the burden of unnecessary stress, cringe, or cower, or complain. Instead, realize and accept that you are secure in God’s control, on His invincible Rock. He knows how to keep you safe, provide you with answers, direction, and peace.

“Citizens of the world, accept the “glorious liberty of the children of God,” and be free! This is your divine right.” (Science and Health, page 227)

Independence Day in the United States is a wonderful occasion to remember our rights. We can choose to eagerly celebrate something more than a national holiday. Today and every day we have the opportunity to recognize and claim our eternal freedom as children of God.

That’s a true holy-day. It’s one that honors the law of Life and Love and rejects the bondage of oppression to material limits, to fears, to anything that would make us feel like less than we are, like unwelcome aliens in a foreign land.

For you are citizens of the world and, in Truth, citizens of heaven—rightful residents in God’s harmonious kingdom. We may feel that the world itself doesn’t recognize or honor our rights as we would wish. And surely there is conscientious work to do to bring out a higher ideal on our earth.

But we can start by knowing who we are, which empowers us to this good work. We can begin by recognizing that we were born free—born with God’s blessing upon our heads, formed of His infinite qualities of Life, Spirit, Love, and subject to a higher law, a holy law that governs us with kindness, understanding, and grace.

Let’s rejoice that we are free. Let’s accept this in our hearts and let this healing reality resonate in our lives today and every day!

“If we love God, we will do whatever he tells us to. And he has told us from the very first to love each other.” (II John 1: 6, Living Bible)

Let’s do as we’re told! This obedience is not blind worship. It’s not being controlled against our will. It is doing what is most natural, right, and powerful.

God told us from the first, at our very origin, in our hearts, the message of Love. It is written within us. Love is what we are made of, because we are built of God’s own qualities, and He is Love. To cherish Love, to appreciate what it is and what it feels like, even to yearn for it, is to know its value. And so, in this love for Love, we can act accordingly, with gratitude for God and His goodness, Truth, and infinite affection.

We can love one another. We can and must express this Love that is in us, God’s own Love for us, towards one another. This may feel like a challenge at times. But as we bring our thought back to honoring God, honoring that divine Love that is ours, we can rejoice in the opportunity to feel and experience this compassion, kindness, understanding, and tenderness. We can recognize all the aspects of Love we are being called to shared. We can consciously realize how blessed we are and how we can bless others with respect, receptivity, openness, grace, and gratitude.

Let’s love because we can and because doing so brings healing, peace, and harmony to us and to all.

“Try your best to live quietly, to mind your own business, and to work hard, just as we taught you to do.” (I Thessalonians 4: 11, Contemporary English Version)

Paul was reminding his followers to continue in the way he had described to them. These practices best served the intention of the Christ-message that Paul was sharing, and it would also support their individual peace and well-being.

It seems difficult at times to live quietly and go about our own business. The world would want to call us to get caught up in its stories, to feel the need to prove ourselves, make a name, compete, argue, or to gain validation and accumulation.

But we can try our best, as this message reminds us. We can take that pause and recognize that minding our own business means being mindful of God’s business, letting Him guide us in what is right and pleasing and fruitful. We can work hard by staying faithful and not slothful; by allowing that divine light and Life within us to move us to diligence in doing what we are truly called to do, knowing we are supported in it by divine power.

And we can live quietly. Not only are we able to do this, we are allowed to do this. We have holy permission to enjoy quietness, privacy, a sacred stillness with God that will bring to our interactions more depth, more understanding, patience, progress, and gratitude.

“Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed.” (Proverbs 16: 3, Amplified Bible Classic Edition)

Here’s a beautiful recipe for success and satisfaction. As we forge ahead on the work we feel called to do or required to accomplish, we have support and guidance at the ready.

We can turn to God. We can release our worries to Him and entrust the business of our jobs and our lives to this loving Mind Who knows us and His purpose for us. As we relinquish the personal sense of control, ingenuity, ego, and fear, we are humbly prepared to be lifted up, directed, provided with all that is needed.

When we commit our works to God, to good, to Truth, we align ourselves with the Almighty intention, and this empowers us. This oneness with God provides us with the inspiration and information that brings progress, achievement, and a sense of rightness both for ourselves and for others as well.

When our plans yield to God’s true intent, and our motives are in tune with His goodness, we come into natural harmony with a Life that is loving, peaceful, and productive!

“…when the Holy Spirit controls our lives he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control;” (Galatians 5: 22-23, the Living Bible)

If we could truly cultivate and practice these qualities, what a rich and generous life we might lead! These ways of thinking and acting are spiritual. They come with a divine energy behind them and the effectiveness of Truth.

We all have these attributes at the ready within us. The seeds are there, for God put them there. These wonderful and right impulses to do and be good, to serve and help and be kind, are part of our true nature. They are natural. While we may think we have to work at being peaceful, patient, kind, gentle, this striving is not the true way.

It is by letting. It is by yielding control to the Holy Spirit that we do easily imbibe and express these wonderful spiritual qualities. This Holy Spirit is always active, present. It is God making Himself known to us. When we are humble and receptive, we can feel this divine action and it moves us to be grateful and open. This Love felt makes us more loving. The awareness of God’s control eases the burden on us to control things ourselves. We are more willing to listen, to be tender and sweet, to be the better individuals God made us to be.
