“Hold me, and I will be safe, and I will always pay attention to your commands.” (Psalms 119: 117, Good News Translation)

This prayer gets at the heart of devotion. When we are able to really feel God’s care, His affection and protection, we gratefully pay attention to His direction for us.

Our God is Love. He is holding on to us, embracing us. This infinite divine goodness is present and powerful, and we can yield to its healing grace willingly. In fact, as we are alert to God, we discover His loving arms around us. When we stop denying His presence, we find that He is with us and that His kindness, attention to us, is unflinching, strong, at hand.

We all want to feel safe and loved. God is able to bring these qualities to us like no person or material thing can do—timely, abundantly, wisely. The Eternal One encircles, undergirds, upholds, uplifts, and leads us. We are held securely in His Love, and we can trust His guidance and follow it, naturally and gratefully.

“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.” (II Corinthians 9: 15)

Gratitude is healing. To give thanks is to become aware of the good that is present. At its best, it is an appreciation not only of physical blessings we may have, but also a deeper cherishing of those qualities of Life that are the most enriching.

We can celebrate with thanksgiving for that “unspeakable gift” that is God and His goodness—the Love that is divine, forever present, and expressed in us and for us. This gift is one that is beyond words. So, while it is lovely to articulate our gratitude by saying grace or voicing prayers, our thanks is truly greatest dwelling sincerely in our hearts.

This genuine gratitude for beauty, joy, kindness, inspiration, the transforming and cleansing power of Truth in our lives, is impactful. It leads us to be and to do good. It keeps us in touch with what is the most real and lasting and powerful.

Let’s give thanks to God for creating us so gloriously, and for that light of Truth that reveals to us the spiritual riches that we truly have in us and around us, today and every day.

Happy Thanksgiving!

“The Eternal’s law is perfect, turning lives around. His words are reliable and true, instilling wisdom to open minds. The Eternal’s directions are correct, giving satisfaction to the heart.” (Psalms 19: 7-8, the Voice Translation)

Our God is the Eternal One. He is the power and the life and the love that exists forever, that has always been. This Eternal All is entirely good. He is not only true, but Truth itself.

We have a reliable Source of being, One who knows what is right and is able to bring out the best in us and for us. This God is the sustaining Law of Life, undergirding all with perfection, maintaining harmony, justice, peace. We can turn to God, to the spiritual good that is forever available, and be guided by wisdom, integrity, and experience results that are beneficial to all.

This life that feels progressive and happy, balanced and right, requires an open mind. We must be willing to set aside preconceived notions, let go of ego and fear, and listen for God’s answers, feel His comfort, and be ready to change. We must be prepared to release our grip on what we think we want for what is truly right and satisfying.

The Eternal is ahead of us and knows the way. Let’s listen with our hearts and follow one humble step at a time.

Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.” (Ephesians 3: 17-18, New Living Translation)

Let’s trust the Christ-Truth. Let’s allow ourselves to lean on God and the great fact of our oneness with Him. Let’s actively accept that we are God’s beloved, that we belong to Him, to Life and Love, and not to the world and its limits.

We can receive this in our hearts. It’s not an intellectual exercise, but a readiness for Love to enter in and for that light to awaken in us the Truth, the saving Truth of being. This release does not set us adrift. It gives us a foundation, a rich and living soil in which to let our roots grow down, gain security, and to make us strong enough to grow outward and upward.

This beautiful blessing beckons us to feel God’s presence always and already within us and under and around us, and so to begin to understand and to cherish the great depth and infinite expanse of God’s living Love for us and for all.

“WILDERNESS…the vestibule in which a material sense of things disappears, and spiritual sense unfolds the great facts of existence.” (Science and Health, p. 597)

Our wilderness experiences may seem dark and challenging. We all certainly have these times where we feel lost and alone, confused and hopeless. In the Bible, the wilderness was a significant character in the development of spiritual lives and the eventual discovery of freedom, peace, strength, and a more profound understanding of reality.

Jesus’ days in the wilderness prepared him to complete his mission. He emphatically defeated the arguments of the devil through his reliance on God and His word. The material sense of things was dissolving as the Truth came to light and to life. Likewise, years spent in the wilderness were challenging for Moses and the children of Israel, but this time deepened their dependence on God, and miracles abounded right where all seemed lost.

Hard times for us can also be seen as a vestibule, a passageway that leads out of a belief in the limits and lies of the senses, and into a more limitless awareness of life as eternal. These wilderness experiences turn us from a belief in ego, in self, as the source and controller of life, to a realization that we are governed by God, divine Love. So, we are truly safe, whole, and ready to live more fully and generously.

We can certainly see that there is beauty in nature’s wilderness, and we should open our eyes to the loveliness of the wilderness in our own experiences—in that space where we abandon a desire for pristine material perfection and embrace the unbridled but natural growth of life set free.

“For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge (to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on) the world, but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him.” (John 3: 17, Amplified Bible Classic Edition)

The purpose and activity of the Christ was not condemnation. Jesus’ message, his healing works, and his final transcendence of death were meant to teach and to prove the might and majesty of divine Love.

And Love does not bring judgment to mankind, but restoration. The Love of God expressed by Jesus resurrects us all to a higher understanding of our freedom to be who we truly are—brothers and sisters, sons and daughters of God, worthy and accepted.

Jesus was telling us the forever fact of God’s mercy and His care for each one of us. The Master’s great mission was not to bring hell to the earth, God’s anger and our shame. Nor was it to teach a sense of division, where some are worthy, and some are not.

Christ Jesus preached and lived a universal sense of healing Love, the holy Truth that reveals to us all how God made us to be, and how His love can continually cleanse us, uplift us, and keep us safe and sound.

“My friends, be glad, even if you have a lot of trouble. You know that you learn to endure by having your faith tested.” (James 1: 2-3, Contemporary English Version)

This may seem like a difficult thing to do. How can we really be glad when we are struggling with problems? It feels difficult to have any sense of gratitude or faith in times like this.

But this message isn’t telling us to put on a false happy face or to be a martyr. It is reminding us that when we are tested, when things come to us that humble us, we gain so much. Not only are we strengthened by our endurance, we also grow in understanding and gain a greater perspective going forward. We learn to rely less on ourselves, and more on the divine might that is truly powerful, right, healing.

And our doubts and questioning in these trying times should not be viewed as a loss of faith. They are a refining of it. We can take these challenges as opportunities to seek answers, to go deeper, listen for truth, and gain the enlightenment that not only helps us heal but helps us to help others as well. For once we have been there, we can bring genuine compassion, understanding, and wisdom to others that is truly assuring and healing.

“The heart of the wise will easily accept instruction. But those who do all the talking are too busy to listen and learn. They’ll just keep stumbling ahead into the mess they created.” (Proverbs 10: 8, the Passion Translation)

Listening is wisdom. It may seem that we need to prove our intelligence, our convictions, by our words. We may get in the habit of talking in order either to call attention to ourselves or even to cover for our insecurities.

But let’s discover that true wisdom in our hearts and be sure that we listen enough to learn, and to love. If we want to grow in understanding and in grace, to find resolution and advancement and success, we would do best to heed instruction, to be open to new ideas and answers. Being a know-it-all, means we are stuck in the ego’s answers. Humbly listening—especially to God’s guidance—brings us the answers that are truly right and progressive, and which cause us both to thrive individually and to harmonize with others.

We can learn the sweet satisfaction of quietness, of listening with our hearts for God’s lovely and loving voice. We can remember that learning is growth, and growth is life. We can yearn to hear what others have to say, while also sharing our own goodness and inspiration with humility and wisdom.

“Listen! He makes his voice heard, his powerful voice. Acknowledge the power of God.” (Psalms 68: 33-34, God’s Word Translation)

God’s voice is powerful, and we can hear it when we listen. This listening is a state of openness and readiness. It shuts out the voices of mortals, of one’s own perceptions and fears, and is receptive for the good news.

God’s voice is the law making itself known. His Word is His action. What He says, He does, for He is Truth, and He is All. We can relish the opportunity to listen, for hearing God’s voice is hearing and feeling inspiration, uplift, health, beauty, harmony, and love.

And along with hearing, must come the acknowledging. To acknowledge is to admit that something is real and true, to recognize the authority and validity of it, and to show or express appreciation for it. We can’t simply hear the good news from God and then just leave it as some flash of momentary light. It must be affirmed as truth, fact. And our conscious gratitude and praise surely helps us more fully feel the reality of this truth.

We can listen, hear God’s voice, and experience the active, saving power of God, right here, right now.

“Are there some wise and understanding men among you? Then your lives will be an example of the humility that is born of true wisdom.” (James 3: 13, JB Phillips New Testament)

The mark of true wisdom is humility. If we gain real understanding, that spiritual discernment and growth that goes beyond merely accumulating information, we can make a positive impact.

Humility is often something that develops through various struggles, where the ego must yield to its own mistaken beliefs about itself and about life. This humility isn’t about feeling like nothing, like we are worthless. It is the treasure of recognizing that our lives are so much better, so much more right and satisfying and expansive, when we let go of our limited personal control, our limited perception of what is and what should be.

The humble man or woman is a great example to others. They don’t seek attention, but they naturally gain respect and appreciation, because their lives are radiant with God, with the goodness that is higher than intellectualism and grandiose actions seeking applause. This humility is a sincere trust in a higher power, in goodness and love. It is a true wisdom that brings blessings, opportunities, contentment, and joy.
