“Live in harmony with each other. Don’t become snobbish but take a real interest in ordinary people. Don’t become set in your own opinions.” (Romans 12: 16, JB Phillips New Testament)

It can be easy to live in our own little world with its fixed judgments and opinions. We may certainly mean well, attributing our thoughts and actions to what feels wise to us and most comfortable. But we are missing out on the glory.

Staying confined in our own beliefs alone, we miss out on what necessarily broadens our lives, what reflects God’s intention of harmony with all creation. As we grow in spiritual understanding, we can recognize that this does not set us apart and above our fellow man. It doesn’t allow us to look down on people as unworthy or pitiable.

Instead, we can embrace others with our openness, our love, our expectation of good, our genuine respect. We can listen to one and all. The ordinary people—those who might cross our path without a second glance—are truly extraordinary. They are God’s ideas, full of His qualities, and certainly worthy of our interest, our time, and our conscious, genuine love.

“Teach me to do your pleasure, because you are my God; your Spirit is sweet; you will lead me in the way of life.” (Psalms 143: 10, Aramaic Bible in Plain English)

We can find guidance and support from a sweet Spirit. We can surrender human will and its ambitions to the gentle certainty of God’s own loving purpose for us.

Let’s be humbly willing to be taught. Let’s remember that to please God—to do and be what He made us to be—is to find satisfaction and peace. Our good and purposeful life is one that God designed and that He made us capable of knowing as well as experiencing.

We can set aside our preconceived notions and judgments of self and allow that sweet voice within us to show us what is truly right and real. Walking with God, step by step, and looking to please Him—goodness and Love—we bring light not only to our lives but to the world as well. We please God. We align with His plan and His power as we let God’s sweet Spirit lead us and eagerly, gratefully follow.

“Those people who are listening to Me, those people who hear what I say and live according to My teachings—you are like a wise man who built his house on a rock, on a firm foundation. When storms hit, rain pounded down and waters rose, levies broke and winds beat all the walls of that house. But the house did not fall because it was built upon rock.” (Matthew 7: 24-25, the Voice Translation)

Let’s listen to God, the divine Mind. Let’s keep ourselves safely established on the rock that is immovable, sound, secure.

We can stop giving power and focus to the world’s scenarios and our own fears and doubts. Instead, we can remember what the Christ revealed. We can rely on and adhere to the teachings that declare God, good, as Life and Love, and ourselves as eternally one with Him. We can be wise by relying on the reliable, rather than letting the winds of opinions and circumstances carry us away from our true selves and best lives.

If we build our house on Love and release the limited self to God’s presence and power, we are grounded on a firm foundation. Our house, our consciousness, can withstand trouble and feel sustained, even when storms inevitably come. We can have a calm certainty within us that knows that peace and harmony can’t really be lost. This is powerful wisdom that can save and set us free.

“Anxious fear brings depression, but a life-giving word of encouragement can do wonders to restore joy to the heart.” (Proverbs 12: 25, the Passion Translation)

We can be givers and receivers of this life-giving word. We can surely find compassion for others in their times of need. But fueling another’s anxieties with further fear and doubts and negativity, is neither helpful nor healing.

Likewise, when we are feeling anxiety and the depression that can result, we can seek out encouragement rather than succumb to that downward pull. The uplifting, supportive word of Life is truly ours to accept, straight from God. We can find our joy again and give joy to others as we listen for God—Who is Life—telling us what is really possible, true, right, real.

It can feel natural and almost expected to live a life of ups and downs, with worry running the show. We may feel there is always another threat to our well-being. But often the greatest threat is the fear itself, a state of thought that closes us off to the good available, the answers at hand, the peace of God that is ready to hold us close.

Let’s be willing to let go of the familiar anxious thinking and receive the life-giving word that reveals our hope and restores our natural and generous joy.

“The Spirit of God not only maintains this hope within us, but helps us in our present limitations. For example, we do not know how to pray worthily as sons of God, but his Spirit within us is actually praying for us in those agonising longings which never find words.” (Romans 8: 26, J. B. Phillips New Testament)

We can lean on God to sustain us in our times of need, to provide us with comfort and inspiration to give us more hope and faith. We can trust that God’s loving Spirit is with us to open our eyes to His goodness and provision.

And in those times when we feel incapable of articulating in prayer what we need or finding enough clarity and presence of mind to know how to think or feel, we can trust God’s merciful kindness. God’s ever-presence means His Love is already there in us and with us. He is guiding us to the Truth, not by our humanly perfect prayer, but by His own Spirit, His Christ tenderly near and loving and saving.

This Spirit is within us. When we turn off the judging and the ego and let God be God, in us and for us, we realize that it is never about what we are doing or saying or how we are saying it. God is All and in all. His Word is in us. It is our very heartbeat and breath, giving us light and life, not by effort but by grace.

“Laying your life down in tender surrender before the Lord will bring life, prosperity, and honor as your reward.” (Proverbs 22: 4, the Passion Translation)

As we humbly surrender our egos and the lives they want to create for us, we discover what’s really going on. When we let go of the mistaken and limiting view of ourselves and our possibilities, we can yield to the magnificent experience that our loving Creator has designed.

It can be difficult to give up the control, to release a sense of our own responsibility and authority over things. But as we do, we feel the sweet relief of this tender surrender. This gentle giving over to God feels right and freeing. Laying down this false sense of a material life that we own and control, takes off the weight of living and makes life a joy.

For a surrender to God is not a loss. It is gain. We have given up the fight on the wrong side—the one that is small, anxious, and limited—to be on the winning side, where we belong. We see and feel the blessings that have always been ours to know, including a sense of trust in God, integrity of being, and a desire to share the riches we are gaining with others as well.

“Stand porter at the door of thought.” (Science and Health, p. 392)

This is wise counsel. It is an alert to keep a watch on our consciousness.

A porter watches at the gate and allows in only that which is welcome, safe, and right for entry. We can be aware of the suggestions that want to get our attention and focus, and discern if they are worthy to come in. We can assess whether a thought or word is going to disturb us, unsettle us, and take us out of our natural state of calm and wisdom.

A porter is also defined as one who waits at the door to receive messages. So, as a good porter, we can send away unwanted thoughts—ones that bring fear and self-doubt, anger and blame and guilt—and make room to receive the dispatches that are right and from a higher and more honest and constructive Source.

We have been given the ability to distinguish between what is helpful to us and what is destructive. We can take a strong stand against those accusations and beliefs that are not from God, good, and shut the door on them. We can then await and welcome in those healing and wise messages from God that bring peace, progress, and happiness.

“For we are the product of His hand, heaven’s poetry etched on lives, created in the Anointed, Jesus, to accomplish the good works God arranged long ago.” (Ephesians 2: 10, the Voice Translation)

Let’s be awake to the beauty of our life and its impact. We were designed by a loving and masterful hand to be and do good. This is our divine reason and our destiny. We can be joyously alive to heaven’s poetry—the inescapable nature of Soul’s promise made manifest through us.

The Christ-light has revealed to us that we are more than mortal beings, surviving by our own wits and instinct, driven by emotion and the physical senses. A new and true light has been cast upon us, unveiling a greater purpose and the ability to achieve it.

God formed us to show forth His own radiance and Love. We can stop focusing on the ugly and limiting beliefs about our lives. We can let go of the ego and its selfish smallness. Instead, we can yield to who we really are. We can honor God by honoring the poetic and powerful idea He made, and bring Truth’s goodness to our lives, one day and one thought at a time.

“He hushed the storm to a gentle whisper, so that the waves of the sea were still. Then they were glad because of the calm, and He guided them to their desired haven (harbor).” (Psalms 107: 29-30, Amplified Bible)

God’s presence and Love comforts with immediacy and tenderness. We can trust Him to reveal true harmony, and to bring us a feeling of calm even in storms. This peace is God’s divine action reaching our hearts and minds. It stills us, and in this serenity, we find direction, safety, confidence.

God’s powerful Spirit is greater than the violent waves of sense and circumstance. His Truth is the substance of His creation, and His law controls all—lovingly, rightly, without interruption or opposition. We can listen for this voice of God and find the stillness where complaint and fear surrender to God’s grace and Love.

This calm that is truly natural to us, brings us clarity and receptivity. It reveals a state of mind where inspiration as well as right activity can take place, leading us to that desired haven that is safe and where all our needs are perfectly supplied.

“As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.” (Psalms 55: 16-17)

We can certainly call upon God at any hour of the day. God discerns our needs whether we cry aloud or whether we silently turn to him with receptive hearts.

Our humility and expectancy are key. We can be as confident of God’s salvation as the psalmist was. We can agree to believe that divine and ever-present Love is with us and is active towards us. We can begin with hope, and by our continued prayers, progress to pure, though not blind, faith and trust. God guides us all the way, revealing more of His love as we continually seek Him.

We can turn to God any time of day, and it may even behoove us to be very deliberate about this. We can consciously, whether in specific human need or not, choose certain times of day to be more aware of God, to seek His Word through our communion with Him.

This doesn’t have to be formal prayer, but if we chose to block out the noise of the ego and of the world for a short time, perhaps three times a day—evening, and morning, and at noon—would we not reap the blessings of peace, guidance, and a more ready and generous approach to the world as well?
