Daily inspiration, December 7th

“One says: ‘I take good care of my body.’ To do this, the pure and exalting influence of the divine Mind on the body is requisite, and the Christian Scientist takes the best care of his body when he leaves it most out of his thought, and, like the Apostle Paul, is ‘willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.’” (Science and Health, page 383)

Take care of yourself! Be healthy, comfortable, thriving, energized, youthful and free. Do this by letting yourself go! Give your body and your life over to the divine Mind and divine Life and keep it out of mortal mind and its fixations, false opinions, fears, and preoccupied “doctoring” in thought and action.

Jesus and his followers proved that “presentness” with God–a thought dwelling on Him and His goodness, substance, Love–was the duty of man and a duty that (as all spiritual behests do) must necessarily lead to healing, release, heaven. By leaving the body and its various parts out of our consciousness, we are receptive to and aware of the reality of Spirit, the qualities that we have and are, those ideal ideas are never confined to organs and functions, physiology or physical structure, time or circumstance.

We can care for our body in very natural and right ways—normalness of being and action, right and satisfying sleep, hygiene, exercise—without undue preoccupation with it. We achieve so much more when the thought is on good, God, Life, freedom, than when it is mesmerized by conversations about and with the body, frustration at its action or inaction, and fear over its appearances. The less thought we put on the body, the more it can naturally be what it already is: the perfect expression of GOD’S thought– always right, always flourishing, always pure and beautiful.

So take good care of yourself, by letting yourself go!

Daily inspiration, December 2nd

“This conviction, that there is no real pleasure in sin, is one of the most important points in the theology of Christian Science.” (Science and Health, page 403)

This key point must be accepted and understood. The acknowledgment of this truth of our life sets us free to be ourselves–the glorious! And it makes us not only right in God’s eyes, but happy, satisfied, at peace.

Let’s recognize that it is not divine Love’s purpose that we be deprived of good things, of joy, of pleasure, of activities that excite and delight. He clearly does not accept sin as a proper source for or expression of anything that would provide such bliss and true contentment. Sin–a false belief that the material senses are true givers or receivers of good–is here to be given up. The Truth of Life annuls the lie, and opens up the heavens for our playing in and rejoicing over.

Sins are merely limitations, obscurations, impurities. These lowered standards for our life, cause us to see ourselves as in need of matter and its testimony to give us delight. This false view would define us as mortal and confine us to its miseries, mysteries, and eventual end. But, the point to be understood is that we are not limited mortals, and therefore, we certainly do not enjoy living as one. Our joy is not found in that which does not in any measure suit our grandeur and nobility and goodness. We have higher expectations and thus a fuller reward of riches in this experience, now, and eternally.

So let’s take hold of this important principle, and remember that what God’s pleasure is for us includes our pleasure in Him—in that which is truly freeing, powerful, healing, loving, and fun! In this our joy is full, lasting, and right.

“The testimony of the material senses is neither absolute nor divine. I therefore plant myself unreservedly on the teachings of Jesus, of his apostles, of the prophets, and on the testimony of the Science of Mind. Other foundations there are none.” (Science and Health, page 269)

Mary Baker Eddy knew the unreliability of material testimony. She recognized that the evidence presented by the senses and to the senses, could never demonstrate absolute Truth or divinity, Spirit. God’s allness includes no matter at all, and His expression is without the limits and flaws that material sense would suggest. To base any conclusion on something which is neither God’s law nor incontestable Truth, is unwise.

So, Mrs. Eddy planted herself on what was trustworthy, unbending, and proven. She stood on the firm foundation that was not only solid and true and provable, but also loving, spiritual, pure, and divine. There really is no other absolute. Jesus demonstrated through his teachings and healing that God alone was Life and Truth and Love. The so-called miracles that the prophets before him and the disciples who followed him showed the world came not of anything material, but rather in spite of it.

Let us be true followers of those who knew and demonstrated that healing and salvation which brought the divine to earth in the only way it could. That Christ-mind, that trust in the Almighty God as One and All and ours parted waves, fed multitude, raised the dead, and set aside without reservation every material limit. The proof is incontestable and the Principle is the same today as of old. Let’s join those believers of yesterday, and trust what is trustworthy, rather than what the senses would so flimsily propose, and rejoice that we know our sure foundation, the one and only God!

Daily inspiration, Thanksgiving 2010

“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.” (Psalms 69: 30)

Let the singing begin! Let your voice and your heart and your being ring out in praise and gratitude for our God—that eternal good, that infinite Love that is the Truth of all Life. Let’s not be stingy in our thanksgiving. Let’s not qualify our gratitude with an equal dose of griping. Let’s not ruin that beautiful song with a dissonant chord of complaint, resentment, envy, or fear.

Our thanksgiving can be full and fulfilling in every right way. Our own joy and recognition of good, and practice of love, are the bounty of it. It is by our own gratefulness that we are able to see more fully the plentiful spread before us, the feast of good that extends throughout every day of the year and beyond the reach of only family and friends. Our song of thanks for everything that we have, everything that God expresses to us and through us every moment, is healing music for the world. It echoes and reverberates, uplifting hearts and filling the poor in spirit, with hope, faith, and love. It heals.

We magnify God through our love of Him and our uninhibited joy at His law of perfect abundance. Our devoted adoration brings to human view His grandeur and power and beauty, which delights, satisfies, and surprises. This spiritual goodness accepted and rejoiced over, necessarily multiplies, bearing fruit vibrant with the colors of life and the strains of His own perfect song of Life!

“…be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” (I Timothy 4:12)

It is our duty and privilege to be an example to others of what we believe. We can and must live what we love, that which gives us peace and joy, which inspires and uplifts. We must consciously and conscientiously recognize the gift of knowing God and His active Science, that great law of infinite Love, and act in a way that invites and encourages others to know as well.

Let’s be careful of what we say and how we say it. This does not mean that we measure every word with too much judgment and concern, but that with our hearts full of God and His presence, we can speak from Truth, with an honesty and love that is healing and right and relevant, and which sufficiently honors God. We are His representatives, and we must glow forth with the beauty of His creation and the authority and goodness of His Word, which is Truth.

It may seem easier to commiserate with others’ gripes, to live within our own little worlds selfishly and in search of physical comfort and pleasure. It may seem easier to ignore the world’s woes than to actively work and pray for their removal from consciousness. It may seem more comfortable or familiar to join in the negative conversation, than to uplift it with our higher thought or with the light of love or insight or humor. But, the rewards of being loyal to what we love are great. Not only will we unveil God’s radiance for all, we will naturally bask in it ourselves!

“Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.” (Psalms 119: 143)

The Principle of God is not only our rock in a storm, but is our joy, our treasure, our pleasure. We may seem at times to be battered by material life, worn out by worries, torn apart with doubts, and yet right there with us is our refuge. Our obedience to and love of God and His law keeps us safe and sane. It sustains us through the darkness and shows us that the dawn is always nearer than we believed.

As we continue to practice what we know, to love the Truth that has come to our experience, and to remain obedient to the good and the right, we are living God’s ideal. And so we are our own saving grace. We can see this firm and unbending law of Life not as a burden in our times of anguish, but as our safety, serenity, and happiness. This law is rock solid to stand on, but it is Love itself, so it is also a comfort, an embrace, a sanctuary.

We can also recognize that the commandments of God, our duties, and His unwavering goodness, is our opportunity to continue rejoicing in spite of the sense of evil, the belief in another power opposed to perfect good. God’s laws are the laws of Life, and they allow, even require us to dance, to laugh, to live. Why? Because these very laws remind us that Life is God, hence already perfect, whole, worth celebrating. And so we live and love ourselves forward and out of the storm, rather than standing transfixed in the downpour, forgetting that we are free.

“Whatever is false or sinful can never enter the atmosphere of Spirit.” (Science and Health, page 70)

The atmosphere of Spirit is thoroughly pure and completely protected. That clean air of God’s presence contains no contaminating element, nor any crack in ever-presence in which to allow for an intrusion. The goodness of Soul’s creation is boundless and unimpaired. It is everything that is true, real, and right. A lie will never find a place in Truth, but be immediately obliterated, dissolved.

Spirit is divine Mind. That which is perfect and all-wise, will never be fooled by an intruder. Sin, disease, any erroneous belief about Life cannot sneak in and get at the loved, lovable, and lovely idea of God. We are safe from these attacks. The propositions of a mortal mind that would suggest contagion, allergy, fear, limits, age, accident, injury, deterioration, or malfunction, never make it through. The belief that they do does not make it so. What mortal mind thinks and fears is no competition for the divine Mind and what He knows and expresses.

Let’s recognize that we always dwell in the undefiled atmosphere of Spirit, and never for an instant in the oppressive smog of sense illusions. Let’s rejoice that the air we breathe, the ground on which we walk, the consciousness in which we dwell, is permanently perfect. We can’t be touched by evil suggestions, and never have been. We are safe in infinite Spirit, the atmosphere that is full of the substance of Love, without room for anything else.

“Truth has but one reply to all error,–to sin, sickness, and death: ‘Dust [nothingness] thou art, and unto dust [nothingness] shalt thou return.” (Science and Health, page 545)

Truth is the Creator of all substance, all being, all that is and ever shall be. Truth is the final word on what is real, all that can be considered true and right and permanent. Anything that Truth did not create has no Life in it, no reality to it, no reason for it, no past, present, and certainly no future.

Truth does not equivocate or make any exceptions. It has “but one reply to ALL error.” All that is not God, good, is relegated to remain the nothingness that it has always been. It is dust, inconsequence, a lie with no bearing and no necessity. It stays beneath our feet, never touching the life of God’s ideas, never opposing the omnipotent Truth.

Sin, sickness, and death have not been given a life at one point which must then be destroyed, healed, saved. This accusing triad of fools has always been nothing, without quality, without character, without purpose, and without that Spirit that animates. Truth is definitive about error. The lies must always remain nothing because Truth, God, is All. In God, perfect good, there was never anything out of which to create or perpetuate evil. There is no room in omnipresent good for even a speck of that dust. It is nothing, nowhere, non-existent.

Truth has its everlasting answer for us: freedom, peace, harmony, uninterrupted and uncorrupted. There is no dust on our spotless being. And that’s the Truth!

Question.–What is man? Answer.–Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements.” (Science and Health, page 475)

The physical appearances, the organs and functions that seem to keep us alive and subsequently fail and condemn us to death, have nothing to do with man. They are not included in the divine definition, the Word of God that is fixed and incontestable Truth. We are not built of matter and its anatomy. That description cannot possibly describe God’s idea.

Spirit created man, and is his very Life. Spirit is not confined in a body or limited by a collection of items supposed to give it mobility, agility, freedom, growth, harmony, peace. Spirit includes and embraces every right quality, unconfined, forever available, expressing without limit and without assistance from matter, that mere belief in limitation.

So what is man? Right where the mortal sense would limit man to a personal body and personal characteristics, age, accident, genetics, material conceptions of what life should be and what it cannot be, right there is the grand and noble man of God’s own creating and anointing. Right there, right here, is the ideal compound idea, made up of every right concept, expressed in man, but originating in the infinite Mind of God. The heart, blood, lungs, brain are not life. God is Life! Is He material? Is He in an organ to be found or lost? No!

We are that man that is composed of God’s own substance, that which cannot fail and has not, which cannot be impaired and has not, which cannot be given a power to govern life, and has not. Let’s not look for a definition of our being or a statement of our condition from such an unreliable source as matter, when God is announcing our freedom clearly and consistently right here, right now!

“…he that believeth shall not make haste.” (Isaiah 28: 16)

We are true believers. We know that our God is good, is Love, is Truth, is omnipotent. We know that He is All-in-all. So we can relax and rely. We can recognize that the activity of God’s wisdom and efficiency will not leave us wanting. We don’t need to hurry forth in panic, to think that our human doing must head things off or make things happen.

God is doing all and doing it well. His time is neither rushed nor limited. Each moment of being is simply ready rightness, always and already active, never late and never too early, never anticipating trouble yet always alert. Let’s enjoy the wonderful opportunity to pause and be grateful for God’s reliability. Everything is under control. We have adequate time and stillness to listen to and hear Him, to love our lives and those in it, to remember God, good, Life, and to forget our worries.

Our trust in God gives us the luxury of lingering in our joy, without a sense that we will lose time or anything else that is right. He is worthy of that trust just as we are worthy of His care. Our abiding is in Him. He maintains and sustains us always and thoroughly.  Our honoring of that fact recognizes it, gives us the conscious awareness of where we are—that heaven of His presence that is orderly, controlled, regulated, right, and still so very natural and peaceful and free.
