Being Free Now

“The mythologic theory of material life at no point resembles the scientifically Christian record of man as created by Mind in the image and likeness of God and having dominion over all the earth.” (Science and Health, page 531)

The record of our lives includes no myths, no dreamed up explanations having no reliable source and no established conclusion. We are not the spawn of Adam and Eve, nor the result of generations of guilt, punishment, pain, material lack, and loss of peace.

We are, likewise, not governed by the gods and goddesses of myth or of mortal mind’s imagination. We have one God, and He is not a material ruler, having governance over a limited sphere. Nature and weather are not gods. The stars are not gods. Human love is not a god. And the material body, a material economy, medical systems and practices, are not gods to be feared or obeyed. There is one God, one Principle, One Creator and One Keeper, and He is over all and in all. He does not share His control and never has.

Our record is spiritual, from forever until forever. We began with the dominion that comes of our divine heritage. Our perfect Life has nothing to do with the mortal picture. We are not a generation encumbered or limited by mere beliefs about man’s origin. We are the very reflection of God’s Truth, His Life, and His Love. We are a generation of free men and women, ready to celebrate our lives with gratitude to God!

“In obedience to the divine nature, man’s individuality reflects the divine law and order of being. How shall we reach our true selves? Through Love.” (Miscellaneous Writings, page 104)

How often do we approach an understanding of ourselves through Love? Isn’t it more often that we delve into discovery with a judgmental attitude, self-condemnation, analysis, or self-justification. Our real nature and being, that individuality that God created and expresses non-stop, can’t fully shine without Love’s light awakening it.

This Love Mrs. Eddy talks about is God, divine Love. His tender and powerful Principle keeps our real identity preserved in its true form, as the very reflection and beloved of the greatest Love there is. The real you is always embraced in that divine Love, and remains intact and beautiful and right and lovable within that gentle place. We can’t help but be who God made us to be, and there is no power that can barge through God and muck up that good and lovely identity.

So, let us approach this full knowledge of ourselves in the only way that has any Truth or power to it. Let us love our way to knowing ourselves. Let us look to our sweet child heart and embrace it with the tender, merciful sweetness we deserve. Let us discover who we really are, and do it now. There is nothing to be afraid of, no demon to find there, only divine Love’s adored idea, the one who was, is, and ever will be innocent, powerful, right, and free.

“By the truthful arguments you employ, and especially by the spirit of Truth and Love which you entertain, you will heal the sick.” (Science and Health, page 418)

We are able to bring out healing, discover reality and harmony, by our reliance on God and His Truth. Through our arguments affirming Truth and its Principle of Love, we can put down and put out those contrary suggestions. By claiming and holding to what is true, what is right, what is God and His creation, we displace the belief in error with the consciousness of the facts, the reality of ever-present harmony.

And we most especially are able to heal and save through the spirit we bring to the need at hand. It is by that awareness and utilization of Truth and Love, ever-available as the very substance of our being, that we are truly able to do healing works. The word alone can’t accomplish much. It can educate, illuminate, but without divine Love in our hearts, it has no real power to save. For it is the Spirit, God, that heals.

We need to be clear in our arguments, to know and articulate truth aloud or in thought as precisely as we can. Our understanding must be utilized. But, with Truth and Love behind our works, even any lack of precision and understanding can be educated through the proof of healing, God’s presence felt. The inspiration and receptivity needed emerge naturally when Truth and Love move with us and within us. And healing necessarily results.

“Nerves are not the source of pain or pleasure.” (Science and Health, page 211)

Because God alone is the source and center of all things, of being itself, of life and action and thought, this power can’t be found in a nerve, a physical conduit. Spiritual sense alone can report truth to the body. A nerve is not a mechanism for spirit to communicate, and it can’t tell us what our life it about, where our joy and comfort are. A nerve and the organs it reaches cannot have power if God has it all.

So, let us claim that direct and immediate communication of our well-being from divine Mind to its own ideas, its own expression. You are the result of God’s communication, the very evidence of His perfect and unimpaired Mind and motion and function and living. All that God emanates forth is in keeping with His Love, His goodness, His Life. The physical sense of anatomy can neither help nor hinder God’s direct assurance of peace and our immediate evidencing of that perfection.

Dismiss the belief that a mortal mind holds the issues of life and that a physical form demonstrates life or lack of it. All Life belongs to God. All function and action and condition are in God and revealed in what He communicates of Life, that Life which is right and enduring and all-loving. A false sense of anatomy can’t overtake the forever facts of Being, of God and His ideas, always at one, and immediately and always painless and at peace.

“Working and praying with true motives, your Father will open the way.” (Science and Health, page 326)

Our motives are our entry into the Promised Land and our protection along the way. We can always look to what our motivation is to see whether we will truly end up where we want to go, that place of completeness, satisfaction, and peace. Our true motives in working and praying are found in our hearts, in what we are loving and cherishing and what is compelling us forward.

Whether we are seeking a position or seeking companionship or seeking justice, we can search our hearts for our true guiding intention and see whether we are on the right track. If fear motivates us, or self-justification, or anger, or desperation, we would be best to regroup and rethink, to listen for God’s truer voice of calm reason and trustworthy protection and guidance. We can, by knowing our safety in God, give up the sense of personal need for the recognition of the abundance of God’s presence.

And so we can purify our motives if they are less than good and loving. Likewise, when we may feel at times unable to carry something out sufficiently, mistaken or ignorant about what we are doing, we can look to our good motives and find solace there. We don’t need to know human perfection in our actions, but the love behind our actions keeps us safe and assures our progress. God’s Principle is the one that works, and it is Love. Discovering and claiming this in all things, our blessed way will open before us and our hopes will be realized in peace.

“The senses of Spirit abide in Love, and they demonstrate Truth and Life. Hence Christianity and the Science which expounds it are based on spiritual understanding, and they supersede the so-called laws of matter. Jesus demonstrated this great verity.” (Science and Health, page 274)

Breathe in with your spiritual senses. Feel and touch and taste that which is Love’s own nature expressing itself to you and through you. The material senses can’t report love to us, or life as it truly is. The have only the awareness of their own limitations. Spirit expresses and experiences with a fullness and an infinitude that can never be grasped by the physical, but which can be glimpsed in small measure there by God’s grace.

Jesus’s demonstrations of abundance, deathlessness, an absolute defiance of material laws of time and nature, proved the spiritual senses to be the powerful ones. His every act drew on God’s spiritual testimony, his own awareness of what Love was saying and doing and being. And this spiritual understanding defied material testimony and revealed perfect harmony in its place.

True Christianity is a reliance on Spirit, an abiding in divine Love as Jesus did. It is checking our material senses at the door and entering into the closet that acquaints us intimately with our spiritual senses, that understanding of Truth that is found in our hearts, and which, when accepted, can be demonstrated with certainty and satisfaction in our lives. Breathe in with your spiritual senses the true breath of Life—Truth, Love, peace, reality, immortality.

“And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And I will give him the morning star.” (Revelation 2: 26, 28)

With persistence and by our progressive triumphs, we gain dominion over our experience, influence in the world, and the very “morning star.” It is by our constancy with God, our devotion to the pursuit of good and life and love, that we are able to claim that true power that is ours by divine inheritance.

We can’t truly claim and feel the glow of that “morning star,” the very light of our day and control over experience, without that humble yearning, that overcoming that comes of seeing through the evils that would bring darkness, and utilizing the brilliant light that is God alone. Divine Love enforces its ideals, requires our obedience, and the very trials that would beset us are the victories, the wisdom gained, that gives us access to the morning star, the dawn breaking on our true and immortal life.

That light of Christ is ours as we patiently trust, loving our God and His good no matter what presentations the devil would try to build up before us. We gain our heavenly perspective by spiritual growth, by a willingness to lose our personal and willful sense of dominion, for that great control and security and power that comes of leaving life and its appearances to Mind and to the healthy sunlight of Truth. Stay honest and true. Stay faithful and expectant, and open up your heart to receive the morning star!

“Tenderness accompanies all the might imparted by Spirit.” (Science and Health, page 514)

We are perfectly loved. Spirit, God, that infinite power and Life and substance and activity, is loving each of us with mightiness and with tenderness. All bases are covered. We can rest in the assurance that nothing can ever attack and damage us, God’s own beloved. We can also rejoice and be peaceful, for that mighty protector is also our dearest friend, the one Whose sweet nearness soothes and calms and heals.

Our strength is spiritual and so it is infinite, available, active and unimpaired. We can draw upon that power at all times, rely on its energy and ability, and go forth in confident expectation. We are never alone in any situation. We have all the intelligent authority that God has, that wisdom that overpowers ignorance and banishes fear in the rational reality of Life as Love.

And that strength never comes to us in a way that is jarring or disturbing or unnatural to us. This power is Love itself, divine Love, perfect Love, so it comes with that tender kindness, that gentleness, that naturalness that is peaceful and assuring. The caress accompanies the might. His strong defending arm is also embracing us. We are safe and strong and serene. We are perfectly loved.

“Time tables of birth and death are so many conspiracies against manhood and womanhood.” (Science and Health, page 246)

Do we really need to buy into and support the conspiracies against us? Is it wise to support these accusations with our fear and preoccupation? Isn’t it much more right and freeing and satisfying to deny the validity of those limits and really live our lives, fully, thoroughly, and joyfully?

The time tables that mortal mind would set up and the human thought would believe are boxing us into a corner needlessly. The sense of man and woman as being born into a material life only to struggle through it with a mere hope of prolonging it, condemns each moment to fear and limitation. Our birth date does not define our life, our well-being, our daily promise of success and health and goodness and fullness of being.

Let us look away from the phases of mortal life (set up by a liar) and claim the truth of our immortal life, that which is consistently one with God and true to His ideal. We are established and governed not by the stars, by a trip around the sun, or by a material picture of what life must be for us at this or that stage of experience. Divine Life is not boxed in by time, but annuls that concept in its own infinity. We are free to dismiss those conspiracy theories as irrational, give up the paranoia, and take hold of the Truth of our glorious and glorified and limitless life and rejoice!

“For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:” (II Corinthians 5:2)

Our most inward selves yearn for spiritual being. Our hearts continue to hope for that which truly satisfies and settles us into ourselves. Mortals may seek material things, material accomplishments, material success and possessions. But this seeking can never deeply satisfy us. We want more and we deserve more.

The spiritual clothing is that heavenly vesture that is always whole and holy, always sufficient to warm us and beautify us, because it has no flaw in it, no limit to it. And this heavenly garment fits us, for it is the very truth about us. It is God’s graceful protecting and adorning, His idea created to perfection and carried out with elegant ease.

The material body that we seem to be confined to has nothing to do with the “house,” that temple of being that is our true abiding place. This state of being contains every right quality, with no possibility of loss, a precision that assures comfort as well as loveliness and joy. This house, this heavenly body and life, is a perfect fit and our only real condition and status. We yearn for this place, this perfect oneness with God, and our plea is met with the Truth: you are there!
