“Spirit is the only substance, the invisible and indivisible infinite God. Things spiritual and eternal are substantial. Things material and temporal are insubstantial.” (Science and Health, page 335)

Choose a new view of things. Take a moment to reflect on the statement above and to consciously decide to see permanence and substantiality in the spiritual. That which is not perceived by the senses, but which rings true with the qualities and nature of God’s own presence and goodness, is our solid substance. It is reliable and indivisible—it can neither be divided from its own Principle nor can we be separated from its Allness and quality.

Look at the world through your spiritual senses, and deny the material senses the supposed power to accurately give you the truth about anything. Our insight brings a true sight, one where that spiritual awareness embraces the physical scene. Our perspective is everything, and the spiritual view is taking God’s own perspective–Life divine, eternal, healthy, right, and true.

Spirit is the only substance. God, good, is the only content and structure and action and nature of the universe. Matter speaks temporally. Spirit speaks eternally. Matter presents a limited view. Spirit announces and expresses constancy and infinite reality. The invisible is here to be seen–experienced with our lives and felt with our hearts. God’s substance is our very being and it is very, very good.

“It is possible, — yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman, — to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness. (Science and Health, page 37)

We are ready to walk in Jesus’ footsteps. This is an honor that we have and it isn’t something distant or requiring years of study or a transcendent holiness gained through saintly living and rabid religious devotion. The Master taught each of us that our humble desire and the very fact of our nature as children of God, gives us a power to demonstrate all that he practiced.

It is possible for each of us to follow Jesus’ lead in some degree, step by step, thought by thought. Love demands it and Love at the same time makes it so natural for us to comply. Child, man, and woman—those youthful and unlearned or those who are mature and seemingly saturated with false beliefs and bad experiences—are all qualified and privileged to be Christ-like beacons of light.

Never belittle your holiness. It is because God is your Father-Mother, as He was the Master’s, that you are meant to express His intention and equipped to do so. No one is left out of this calling. All must be who God caused him to be, the very expression of His perfect Life and Love, of the Truth that has dawned on human thought to set the world free. Let’s gratefully claim this honor we have today, and walk forth into our world with Jesus as our example and the Christ as the power to heal, bless, and save.

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3: 9)

The impatience of human nature is often found accusing God of hesitating, of forgetting about us, of holding off too long on the delivering of His goodness and peace to us. We may feel as if His promises are false or at the very least, elusive and distant from us, a dream merely to be endlessly hoped for.

But it is God’s patience with each of us that is going on. His promises are never slow or unready or dishonest. He is always faithful. It is He Who is patient with us, in the sense that His goodness and righteousness never leaves or deviates, but continues to require the full destruction of the errors of human sense, and the full revelation of man as God’s own child.

He will accept nothing less than perfection, so He does not allow us to miss a single vital and glorious and joyful step in our acceptance of the full freedom He has promised. No one is left out of this promise, and no mere request can bring us into a life that we have not fully accepted for ourselves. God is leading us patiently, with intimacy and tenderness, step by step, slowly or quickly, toward the full realization of the Life that He has made and the perfecting Love that He daily abundantly bestows.

“The description of man as purely physical, or as both material and spiritual,–but in either case dependent upon his physical organization,–is the Pandora box from which all ills have gone forth, especially despair.” (Science and Health, page 170)

The premise of physicality, either in full or in part, is a starting point that leads to no good. This perception and acceptance of man as made of matter, bound by its limits and confined to its unkind laws, will never lead to comfort or peace or true happiness. A reliance on physical organization always leaves man open to physical disorganization, deterioration, doom.

But this “Pandora box” that, when opened, would bring hopelessness, needn’t be ours to accept blindly and without question. It is a myth about life that can be given up and our true box of delights picked up and eagerly opened. We can give up despair by accepting the gift of reality—spiritual being, based always and only on God and His substance, His Life, His organization, His Love.

Begin anew with this true description of yourself and of life. You are built of spiritual qualities, of God’s own nature. You are His image, not the picture of physical beliefs about life. You are a coherent whole, not a bunch of parts. Your wholeness is holy, the natural and necessary result of your Creator’s Principle, that which is entirely spiritual, harmonious, immortal—a treasury of riches, not a box of gloom! Open the gift of the true you!

“The scientific government of the body must be attained through the divine Mind. It is impossible to gain control over the body in any other way.” (Science and Health, page 167)

Our body may seem our burden at times, acting out of accord with health and mobility and comfort and ease. We may feel as if this material sense of ourselves can’t be reined in, but is left to its own devices and to time and to material remedies and adjustments. But we each have the right to regain control, to be in the driver’s seat of our own well-being.

While will-power may seem our only choice if we are to be in charge of our bodies, it is “impossible” to gain a real control in that way. The benevolent and right government of the body can come only through a release to the divine Mind’s control, not through mere human will. God is not frustrated or confused or disturbed or fearful. He has no latent issues that need to be handled and no dark fears about the continuity of Life. The divine Mind is always wise, loving, and infallibly right.

Let’s give up the belief that our body is out of control or that we must personally control its functions, its capacity, its durability. The divine Mind alone is in control, and His loving control over you and your glorious, pure, perfect body, is your sweet release to the life that is Life—free, natural, enduring, comfortable, and good.

“The continual contemplation of existence as material and corporeal—as beginning and ending, with birth, decay, and dissolution as its component stages—hides the true and spiritual Life, and causes our standard to trail in the dust.” (Science and Health, page 550)

Let’s turn our gaze from the confusing and disappointing scenario that mortal life would present. This mesmerizing cacophony of human experiences, physiology, dangers, misunderstanding, fear, limitation, is not getting us any closer to the Truth of things. It drowns out the harmony that is actually singing forth, and the peace that is our present and true state of being.

We sell ourselves and our lives short when we make this mortal picture the point from which to evaluate our potential and to see the glory of our lives. Life is more than a series of necessary consequences of time and matter and the various phases of mortality. Life is a splendor, a wonder, a blessing. There is nothing real or natural about limitation, deterioration, or even mere survival.

Look away from the soap opera. Shake yourself from the sense of fixation on the mortal details of life—what it was, what it is, what it will be. Start with a fresh perspective, the real, crisp and clear vision of existence as born in Spirit and built of Spirit’s qualities and Love’s intention. Don’t buy the load of garbage about life, but instead demand to truly know what you already possess—a life that is full in goodness, new each day, and perpetually harmonious, inviting, satisfying, and yours to live and love!

“In Science, man’s immortality depends upon that of God, good, and follows as a necessary consequence of the immortality of good.” (Science and Health, page 81)

The qualities of God, of perfect being, are immortal. We know that Love is not reliant on mortals, on matter, or on time. Love is a property of God that exists everywhere and always has. It is broad in its definition and certain in its essence. Likewise, Truth is an eternal concept, never lost in interpretation. The Truth is always the Truth, no matter how it is viewed by limited perception.

Good is God and is infinite in substance and in presence and in power. Man exists in and of God’s own nature, so he is pure good expressed. His true being is as immortal as the idea of good, an ideal that is out of reach of mortality, distortion, loss, finiteness. Good is a living constant. God is the source of this beautiful ideal, and the real man is the proof of it at all times.

Man’s immortality, our deathless, ageless, changeless being, is reliant on the permanence of substance, of that which makes us up. Built of perfect good by a perfect hand, we must be as immortal as good, as solid as Truth, as expansive and magnificent as Love. Our life is the natural and necessary consequence of our origin and constitution. Goodness made us and makes us up. We are spiritual and Spirit is everlasting, immortal, and so that makes us naturally fearless, not to mention grateful and joyful and alive to our wonderful, eternal Life.

“Man, made in His likeness, possesses and reflects God’s dominion over all the earth.” (Science and Health, page 516)

God gave us dominion at the get-go. At the very outset of creation, God made man, the very image of all that He is and all that He loves, and gave that ideal man every good thing and the power to know this. This natural dominion is as much a part of our own being as is our very existence. It comes with the territory.

And God never withdrew that dominion from us or gave it to us concerning some things and not other things, at some times and not at other times, for some people and not for other ones. Our dominion, our natural power and control over all things that the earth would present to us, is permanent and complete. We have it in every circumstance, over every seeming material condition.

We have this dominion because we reflect God, the divine Mind. The control over that which would come into our experience and which would constitute it is not a human power. It is not subject to our personal ability to subdue problems and conquer the world. It is based on God’s precise control. We reflect His dominion and possess it through our reflection. The Original Omnipotent maintains that perfect control and order and keeps it all as perfect goodness, harmony, and infinite Life. Our dominion is utilized by yielding to the fact that all God has is ours. And so we are able to put all the terrors and errors of sense squarely under our feet, and walk freely and gratefully!

Daily Inspiration, February 28th

“Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.” (Romans 12: 16, Amplified Bible)

Knowing our brilliance as a child of God, our true and limitless nature, should not make us arrogant or self-righteous. Instead, it should make us more humble, more aware of better ways in which we can love others. Divine Love does not judge or condemn. It does not play favorites or exclude. It does not see haves and have-nots.

This is our best self. That one that is the obedient reflection of our God Who is perfect Love. As we recognize ourselves this way and see others as having the same awareness, the same high quality, the same lovableness, we are living not only more kindly, but more powerfully.

Be alert. Confidence and inspiration can shift into arrogance and stubborn inflexibility when we are not keeping watch. There is no individual better than another because of his education, his position, or his human status. We have much to learn from everyone, and the small and seemingly humble tasks that some may do, are just as full of God’s qualities as the acts of a broad visionary. Simplicity, humility, and sincerity are powerful beyond measure, for they proceed from the spiritual authority that is on high, rather than  from human high-mindedness that can’t see the brilliant forest of all life because it is transfixed by the trees of its own ego.

Daily Inspiration, February 23rd

“The atmosphere of earth, kinder than the atmosphere of mortal mind, leaves catarrh to the latter. Colds, coughs, and contagion are engendered solely by human theories.” (Science and Health, page 220)

The earth is not our enemy. Nature, climate, atmosphere cannot be dangerous to its inhabitants. God has created all, spiritually, and it must necessarily harmonize. The world belongs to God, to His nature and goodness, and so it is loving. It is kind.

Mortal mind alone seems to create and perpetuate an earth that causes us to suffer, to fear, to live less than freely. Mortal mind attempts to create arbitrary laws about our lives, proposing vulnerabilities, contagious beliefs, allergies and sensitivities. These unloving propositions need not be accepted as our burden, our struggle, our expectation, or anyone else’s. We can deny them and Love’s laws will back us up.

The “cold season” is as arbitrary a distinction as is Ground Hog’s Day or football season. It is a proposition that does not threaten or frighten the birds or the butterflies, or keep them from taking wing. Human theories have gained momentum and force through acceptance, but that doesn’t make them real or natural or necessary. God’s laws are over all, are constant, and they are kind. Let’s obey Him and rejoice in our everlasting freedom every hour on every corner of this beautiful earth!
