Daily Inspiration, May 14th

“…put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.” (Colossians 3: 10-11)

Putting on the new man is accepting our true identity as the expression of God, of good, of Love itself. This is the message of Christ—that we are loved and loving children of God, the living proof of His Oneness and His perfect Love. Any delay in letting go of the old man, with his personal, limited, selfish, self-defensive, judgmental beliefs and practices is keeping our harmony, health, and joy at bay.

Our renewal is not simply remaking ourselves. It is a release to divine Love’s original concept, His immaculate conception of each of us as perfect, right, brother and sister ideas in a Mind that has only good ideas that naturally harmonize. The recognition and acceptance of our individual identity as God’s own idea must necessarily include the whole of His vision and the law of Life that Christ revealed.

We can’t be “born again,” have our renaissance into the life that God intended, without loving our neighbor as ourselves. The Christ-man is the ideal man who Jesus presented to us and this ideal is every one of us. There are no distinctions, no material or physical classifications, in spiritual Truth. Christ is the true idea of God and of man, every man, and to be His image, we must accept this fact. The Creator made no separations. He made a perfect idea and expression of Himself and this man and woman is to be seen in every place, because God is in every place.

“Hatred and its effects on the body are removed by Love.” (Science and Health, page 374)

Divine Love is a powerful neutralizer. Unconditional love, mercy, forgiveness, compassion, can bring healing between people and nations. It can cause even the most entrenched resentments and anger to dissolve and harmony and respect to emerge naturally and beautifully.

Love, spiritual Love received and expressed, can do the same for our bodies. The hatred that we may hold toward others or feel expressed toward us may seem to be found manifesting itself in physical conditions that are uncomfortable, painful, and threatening to our peace. These unkind symptoms then would only aggravate the discordant view and keep one in the throes of hatred, feeling unloved and unlovable and unloving.

We can attempt to soothe the body with material methods and to soothe the hatred with self-pity or revenge, but none of these can bring us true and lasting peace. Divine Love removes the effects of hatred on the body of our world and the bodies in which we seem to live and move. Be willing to let go of a belief in the power of hate to hurt you. Be ready to stop hating your innocent body and begin to truly love it for its loveliness, holiness, wholeness. Divine Love made you and your life. This Love is therefore the natural restorative. It brings to the body what hatred would try to take away, and settles us back into who we were made to be—the object and expression of pure Love.

“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” (Psalms 34: 18)

Comfort is never distant from us. Encouragement is never out of reach, and grace is always at hand. The grief and sorrow that can seem to overtake us do not separate us from divine Love’s attention and affection. The tears and fears that blind us to Life’s hopes and possibilities are wiped away by the tender hand of God.

Even when we feel we have put ourselves in a rough spot, and our broken hearts are self-inflicted, we are still near and dear to God’s heart, at a perfect place to receive His mercy, understanding, and a fresh and even more beautiful start. When we don’t see anything but our own sins and sorrows, God sees us tenderly and comes to us with His comfort, not His condemnation. He shows us that loss can be gain and that He has never and will never leave our sides because we are His own beloved.

Let’s know that this ever-present Comforter, this perfect Friend, is with everyone. Let us keep our sweet compassion for others, our hearts at one with the world, but let’s not get washed over in pity and discouragement over the woes we see. God is right where His dear ones are feeling hurt, afraid, ashamed. He is the ready rescue for you and for all. He is infinite, powerful, perfect, gentle Love.

Daily Inspiration, May 2nd

“We know that all will be changed ‘in the twinkling of an eye,’ when the last trump shall sound; but this last call of wisdom cannot come till mortals have already yielded to each lesser call in the growth of Christian character.” (Science and Health, page 291)

God’s grace brings a natural pace to our growth. We are promised that we shall all be changed in a moment, that we will witness our true glory as children of God—spiritual, immortal, perfect. This reality of our being does not take time to create, for it is already the truth of life. But, it may take daily listening and following as we come to see this ideal in a way that we can fully understand, appreciate, and experience.

This “last call of wisdom” is our promise and our beacon. God guarantees that we know Him, Life, Love as it truly is. To come into the fullness of such breathtaking knowledge, we must take some necessary breaths along the way. We must daily, hourly, give up those earthen weights that are keeping us down and darkening our way. We must not try to rush out ahead of the lessons needed or we will not fully grasp the final answer if it were shown to us.

The “lesser” calls for growth in our character must be heeded and appreciated. They are there to lead us gently yet firmly and decisively in the way of goodness and Truth. We must realize that anything that doesn’t bring us a real peace needs to be discarded. Anything that does not indicate the presence of Love needs to be abandoned. The selfish motive as well as the self-judgment needs to be given up. We must yield each day, with God’s guidance, a little more of that fruitless human will for that fruitful divine will. Christian character requires our genuine kindness and sincere humility. It necessitates a willingness to be led forward, step-by-step, into our true selves, and to realize also that all of God’s children are worthy of this same timely and timeless glory.

Daily Inspiration, April 30th

“…every good endowment that we possess and every complete gift that we have received must come from above, from the Father of all lights, with whom there is never the slightest variation or shadow of inconsistency.”  (James 1: 17, JB Phillips New Testament)

Go back to the Source. Take a conscious look at the reason why you are blessed and the same reason that you can never be deprived of anything good and right. Our God has given us our talents, our intelligence, the very love we feel in our hearts, and the ability to carry out great goodness with healing results. His flawless nature is our guarantee of enduring blessings.

Our God is “the Father of all lights.” He is not the creator of darkness, deprivation, fear, loss, lack. He is not a God of randomness and neglect. His lights are eternal flames and they burn within us and for us, leading us to Himself, to the Almighty One Who is Love known and expressed. God is the Infinite Giver and His gifts are always fitting, lovingly bestowed, perfectly timed, and satisfying in all ways to everyone.

You are exceptional, but you are not the exception. You were not left out of when divine Life gave out His gifts. He knew exactly what He was doing when He consciously caused you and He has never and would never cast a shadow of doubt on His own handiwork. His pleasure in you is His consistent sustaining of you. Everything you are comes of God’s own substance, His qualities; your nature glorifies His very being. You are always and now a celebration of His gloriousness. See and accept that your life glows with a light that no shadows of material belief and disbelief can ever dim. You are gifted, God is pleased, and the world is blessed by your living light.

Daily Inspiration, April 25th

“…if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” (Matthew 5: 23-24)

We cannot truly honor God if we are at the same time harboring anger toward one of His ideas. The gift of our devotion is not full and true if it includes something so averse to His Mind, His Principle. Hatred and resentment can’t bring us the full blessing we desire. We must cleanse the anger with Love if we are to truly feel the health and well-being and peace we pray to receive.

Obedience to divine Love requires us to be loving. Anything contrary to this love is disobedience, and it may lead us to feel less protected and blessed by that law of Love. We are built of the substance of Love, so it goes against everything that we are to be angry or feel hatred. That’s why such feelings so often seem accompanied by discomfort, physically as well as mentally. They are an unnatural intrusion on our natural purity and goodness.

Drawing close to God is our salvation and strength. It is always worth the effort to set aside our anger and so to find Love’s perfect remedy. It may not always be easy to reconcile with our brother, an act which always begins in thought. But God helps us to do this. He shows us that His Love and His Principle are one, and His supreme wisdom assures that all can awake to see their own errors and to find a truer sense of goodness. Your gift to God is your genuine love. This gift is a gift to yourself as well.

Cherish love, not resentment. Your health and disposition will improve and you will feel more like yourself, that child of God that is peaceful, poised, good, and happy.

Daily Inspiration, April 23rd

“And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend.” (Exodus 33: 11)

We have an intimate friend in God. We have an understanding confidante and a trusty advisor who will never fail us. Moses experienced this tender relationship in the midst of his daunting task to lead a people to freedom, against all human odds. The great burning bush experience that initially got Moses’ attention and awe was not God’s necessary method of communication. He doesn’t need pyrotechnics to get His thoughts across to us.

God is ready to speak with us as our friend and we can commune with him in the same way. Communing means “talking with intimately.” Our prayer to this infinite Love is an intimate connection with Him. We can enter into our communion, our open-hearted prayer, with this sense of being ourselves with a friend. Let’s realize the nearness of God to us as well as the natural ease of this presence with us and for us.

When I read descriptions of the prayer times of Jesus or Mary Baker Eddy, I am struck by how natural this communion was. There was a readiness to listen and a joy in doing so, eagerness in hearing what our Friend should say that would be so right and full of understanding. With these inspired healers there was also the spirit of honest and free questioning, not as one would to a Deity but as one would to someone very close, one in whom there was complete trust. They felt they could humbly reveal right where they were in their thoughts and needs, and this led to healing. God speaks in the language of Love for He is Love. This pure affection is so easy to talk to and natural to listen to and so to gratefully receive answers, comfort, and peace.

Daily Inspiration, April 18th

“I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.” (Revelation 3: 8)

God knows what you have done. He knows who you are. He knows the thoughts in your heart and your intentions. Because of His perfect awareness of the truth of you, He also knows what you are capable of. He knows that you include in you the potential for greatness and true satisfaction in it.

And so He sets before you that open door. It may seem that material circumstances close off the portals to true success and contentment. But no man or mortal concept can shut what God has left wide open. It is He that is Life–your life–and He knows where that wonderful life is going and how glorious it simply must be. He sees the goodness that is you, even when you don’t see it yourself, and He awakens you and the world to that radiant Truth of you.

We are constantly being beckoned through that open door to progress and peace. There is nothing holding us back and the password is only our desire to know God, good, and by doing so to also realize our own innocence, His control, and the good life that has more to do with a lasting peace and joy than with fleeting human achievement.  God knows the work of His hand. He knows what He made and He will never hide His glory from the world or from you, His own beloved child.

Daily Inspiration, April 16th

“God is at once the centre and circumference of being.” (Science and Health, page 204)

God, good, perfect Love, is the very core of all being. At the same time, He is the boundary of all Life. Everything exists because at its heart is God–divine Life, Truth, and Love–and so all expresses this flawless purpose, this inmost requirement for its nature and action.

And nothing can ever move outside of God, outside of His Principle, His Spirit, His Presence and intention. His infinite embrace is the outer perimeter to all being, all life, and we can never cross that border and step out of His care, out of His boundless circle of Life and Love. God is both the intimate and the ultimate of all things. His reason for Life is at the heart of us, and His expression remains loyal to His perfect Love for us.

Wherever you believe another may be or wherever you think that you are in any moment does not change the law of God’s infinite nature. He is always going to be our heartbeat and our breath. He is always going to be the place where you are headed and the place where you have been. God, good, is your divine destiny and only destination—the fire of life within and the flame that will always lead you home.

Daily Inspiration, April 11th

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)

This has been called the Golden Rule. It is golden because it is so valuable, its governing Principle a gem in our lives to be treasured and obeyed. This precious instruction seems to me to be at the heart of all the good that comes in the world and disobedience to it constitutes all the discord that appears between individuals and nations. If we weigh every action against this ideal, we will be forces for good in the world and will benefit ourselves as well.

Jesus shared this pure idea in his Sermon on the Mount. In this sermon he also reminds us that to think evil, to judge another as less than our equal–a fellow child of God–is inadmissible and has no place in Christian living and healing. This radiant rule includes not only our actions, but also our thoughts. If we think less of another, and then put on an act with them, this is hypocrisy and lacks the genuine goodness that Jesus is punctuating in his teaching. Would we ourselves want to have someone treat us well and speak ill of us behind our backs? Would we not feel the dishonesty from them? Likewise, thinking less of another is beneath our own goodness, and it will never give us the freedom and peace of mind that really suits us and satisfies us.

This is not a difficult task. The golden rule was meant to be natural to us. Why? Because love is natural to us. We are built of divine Love’s intentions and when we receive eagerly that wonderful love of God, we can’t help but feel the need to share it in all its qualities—understanding, respect, kindness, mercy, receptivity, trust.

Utilize this Golden Rule in your own life and pray to know that this vital ideal is the world’s to claim as well. The hatred and competition and envy that seem to drive the actions of people and nations and to tarnish this golden harmony, can be washed away. Divine Love can do it and we can be a part of an earth that knows heavenly peace.
