“The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another’s good.” (Science and Health, p. 518)

We can lean on one another in times of need. There will be times when we are the ones to provide the support, when we feel more rich in spirit—more conscious of our presence with God and of His ready grace. With God’s own rich qualities, we are able to provide comfort, supply inspiration, and take human footsteps on behalf of another that meet their need.

But this brotherhood isn’t one-sided. There are not those rich and those poor. We are each full of God’s goodness, brothers and sisters born of God’s abundant Love. We are all empowered to give and also to receive with humility and receptivity. Those who may appear to us to have less than we have, may have much more to give than we see. Their own connection with God may supply them with the kind of wisdom, joy, trust that we can receive and learn from. There are no haves and have nots. There are only opportunities to awaken another to the available good and to be lifted up when things seem challenging.

In helping one another, we fulfill God’s Principle of Love. At the same time, we utilize its abundant blessings, rely on its law. When we see another’s need in a moment and provide it—with spiritual discernment and not the ego’s assumptions—we are at the same time gaining good for ourselves. We are responding to God’s purpose for us, and this causes us to grow as we give, as we collaborate, as we receive of God’s boundless goodness which belongs freely to us all.
