“Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.” (Colossians 4:2, New Living Translation)
Prayer is powerful. It can do so much to bring us peace and comfort, direction and inspiration. It is worth our devotion as a very practical action for living a right and good life.
But how do we pray? This verse gives some clear instruction. We devote ourselves to it, first off. We choose to do it. We take the time and make the space for it. It’s a conscious decision that we dedicate ourselves to fulfilling. It’s a plan.
And we pray by beginning with an open mind. We don’t take this time with God to continue to hold to our own ideas, our fears, our doubts, our grievances. We enter into this sacred space with a mind that is awake and aware, alert to God’s voice, to what good news may come, to a new approach to our thinking and being. We are ready to be healed.
And, finally, this verse reminds us that prayer requires a thankful heart. We come to God with gratitude that He is God, and that He is Love. We love Him in return for being our Creator, for being the Mind that knows all and is there for us at all times. We are actively grateful for good, for Life, and for the powerful Truth that is right here, right now—in our quiet and heartfelt prayer—ready to set us free.
