“He will feed His fold like a shepherd; He will gather together His lambs—the weak and the wobbly ones—into His arms. He will carry them close to His bosom, and tenderly lead like a shepherd the mother of her lambs.” (Isaiah 40: 11, the Voice Translation)
Our God is divine Love. His care for us is a thorough embrace, a full measure of protection and affection, for every need we may have.
A shepherd cares for his sheep; their safety and well-being matter deeply to him. It is the shepherd’s duty and his natural impulse to watch over each one, and to know what they need and when they need it.
God tends to us like a shepherd does. We are all of His one fold, a multitude of God’s precious ideas— each one known and seen and loved. He enfolds us in His arms, individually, and collectively. He sees us as we are and knows us also as a harmonious flock, led by the same protector and guide, a cooperative expression of His holy purpose and the object of His love.
When we feel weak and weary, our Shepherd carries us, allowing us rest and a feeling of comfort. When we are mothering others or bringing new ideas to life, He leads us. Tenderly. Gently. We can come into what is new and right and good—peacefully, safely, well-nourished and loved, all the way home.
