“Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes.” (Romans 12: 2, the Passion Translation)

Imitation is not genuine. If we are to be true to ourselves and to grow in understanding and in grace, we have to go to our hearts. We can choose to behave like the world would have us do and get taken in by its often-gloomy presentations. Or we can let the Holy Spirit reveal who we are and what is really true.

We have to change the way we think. It is about being conscious of what we are letting in, what ideas and perspectives we are honoring and accepting as law. It is about looking to our own motives—seeing whether they are driven by ego and will and neediness—or whether our intentions are loving, good, and helpful.

It may seem difficult to transform ourselves, or even to fully discern who we should be. But our job is simply to be willing, ready to let in that Spirit of God. We can allow the Christ to reveal what needs correction, elimination, and to dissolve these false traits naturally through the light of living Love.

Then that total transformation refreshes our view. We see and live a more beautiful and satisfying life. And instead of imitating the culture around us, we bring our authentic radiance to elevate it, encouraging this rightful reformation for all.
